I ordered: Chicken tikka masala: it was amazing. The sauce was thick and the dish was packed with boneless, tender chicken, peppers and onions. It is the perfect amount to share with another person. The spices were incredible and really tasted authentic. The spiciness level was also perfect. Basmati rice: I was quite surprised of the portion that they give. It is a really big and deep bowl filled with rice. It tasted great pairing this with the tikka masala sauce. Garlic naan: the naan was incredible. You can taste the fresh garlic on it. Overall, I was very satisfied with the quality and quantity of the dishes. They are all reasonably priced and I would love to go back here. My only issue was that the dishes did not come out as hot as I would have liked. It was all warm but could've been hotter.

If you want Gujarati Indian street food, come here!…read more Although the owner/chef Jay has apparently worked in high-end western hotels before, you'd never know it until you sink your teeth into his plainly-adorned but delicious creations. Nothing fancy here except the flavours ... and therefore 4.25 stars! I ended up ordering 4 curries (two/dish): two specials that both included basmati rice and plain naan, at home we dug into chicken tikka masala, chicken cajun curry, chicken chipotle-mango curry, and a 5-bean all-veg curry. Flavours. Deep and rich, and varied to set them apart. Of amazing depth were especially the cajun and chipotle-mango! When Jay was cooking them, I could smell the accented spices used. As I cook 20-spice Chettinad chicken curry and spicy vindaloo at home, and know the smell of fresh spice cooking, his skill is borne out in textures, flavours and ... It's likely that his seasoned butter (ghee) and gravy base are just great, and wide-ranging enough to wonderfully underlay any added flavours. Decor. Matching his spartan outlook, super plain surroundings with only 1 small table for 2 and 3 window bar-type seats completes its barebones features. Although he likely has plied his profession in sumptuous surroundings, it's really about the food, isn't it? Price. An average of $10/meal, all of which come with 2 curries each. Portions were large enough to stuff us, and enough left over for a small lunch later. For sure offering a sizable tip is so appropriate! Jay claims that he's the only true Gujarat establishment in the Calgary area. This guy is for real. Imagine making 4 separate very distinct and yummy curries in a mere 20 minutes. Saffron has me a bit torn…read more One hand it's solid food, served quickly, friendly staff, and reasonable prices for Indian in the NW side of town. On the other, if I'm craving Indian it doesn't quite satisfy. From someone who loves Indian food and had traveled to India and eaten the real deal - it's not quite to my quality of authentic. For example, the naan is closer to greek pita than I'd expect. Not that I have an issue with greek pita... but just not always what I'm hoping for. That being said, there isn't a lot of NW competition for Indian so it is sometimes better than taking a bit of a drive to something a little more authentic or going to a higher price point place that takes a while. Saffron is a bit different that some restaurants in that they make a handful of dishes that day and you choose from those - not the menu unless you order in advance for a lot of people or something. They will always have butter chicken and a dahl but other than that you'll have to call or just go check it out. They will always have a few vegetarian dishes and then some with meat. They often have ocra and saag which are far from my favourites - and that's sometimes a bit disappointing to me. The good thing about Saffron is the food is made when you stop in (but does NOT taste like buffet style that's been sitting) so it's quick to stop in and pick up. The prices for the NW are not bad. For a veggie combo you get 1 veg dish, rice, naan and a curry for $9. Add a buck for a meat combo. Add a couple bucks for a second veg dish. A combo with 1 dish is more than enough for me most of the time. A combo with 2 dishes is usually 2 meals if I buy more naan. Overall that's not a bad deal when facing the cost of other NW alternatives. Overall, Saffron is definitely a good option to have around. Review 3 of 30 in Yelp's 30 Day Challenge
