$8 for a huge dosa is INSANE!! This was my first meal in Calgary as I arrived from the airport. I was craving something warm and I noted to the sweet lady working there that I have never had dosa before. She promptly recommended her favorite veggie dosa as well as some chicken curry for me to try. Both dishes were so good and huge portions! I didnt even get to finish my food - I happily took a to-go box and ate it all that night! The parking was plenty when I got there but it is in a strip store area so I can see how it can get full.Interior decor was pretty standard but I appreciate how clean it was. My husband and I were visiting from Seattle and decided to have dinner at this place based on the awesome reviews. I ordered a Combo while my husband ordered a Chicken Biryani. The combo came with idli, dosa, vada and kesari - a complete south indian meal. Visited Calgary for the family day weekend, did a Google search on Indian restaurants in Calgary and this one stood out amongst many. Visited on Sunday, February 19 for lunch, ordered Daal vada, South Indian combo II, Chukka Mutton Varuval and salted lassi, also ordered PURI BHAAJI and chicken biryani for takeout. Food and service are 5 *. Brought the chicken biryani as Is to Vancouver and having it for dinner on Monday. There is still some leftover for Tuesday lunch and the quality is impeccable. Visited for a diner with family. Two adults and two 6 year olds. Gave my phone number and Waited outside for 20 mins for his call till a table cleared. Went in and ordered Combo2 and Mysore Masala. After finishing it we ordered Veg Chettinad Cury with two parathas. Kids were hungy still so my wife called the waiter/owner/cleaner/cashier to ordee a Ghee roast paper dosa. The guy probably mentally  instable started blasting at my wife that we should order food at once, eat and vacate table. He blamed us for he loosing three tables. We were in there for about 45 mins and  racked up a $50 tab. This guys frustrated with current situations taking it out his customers. Such a petty guy that he thinks that he could earn more money by kicking  customers out. He most likely discriminated us as he knew that we are from Edmonton from my phone. When I told him in polite tone thats not the way you talk to customer and I am not happy he said exact word "I do not care. I lost three tables. I dont need your bussiness." So if you want to get treated like shit after paying for food. There no place like Madras Cafe. read more

THE best South Indian restaurant in Calgary. Coming from India, I was missing authentic South Indian food. But that was before we found Madras Cafe, thank God! A few other so called Dosa places make north Indian styled dosas. For starters, Dosa is a south Indian dish and North Indian folks (I'm one of them) make dosas in a particular way (not necessarily good or bad) that's different from the way South Indian folks make it. I'm so glad Madras cafe makes it like south Indians :) Staff is friendly, which helps. They also serve authentic filter coffee (and not Nescafe (instant coffee) in a filter coffee glass). We ordered Rava onion masala dosa and Paneer uttapam, both nicely made. The chai was also great (per wifey). Prices are also so reasonable. The only improvement they can do is on the decor. But since the product was awesome, not deducting any marks for that :) Thanks for being there in Calgary. Will come back for sure. read more

The thought process while eating this meal went as follows... 1. This is really good. 2. This is the best Indian food I've ever had. 3. This is possibly one of the best meals I've ever had. It's good. They specialize in "Southern Indian food", which is different from the typical naan and curry that the majority of places in the US offer. The Madras Curry was amazing. A great blend of spices, and really, really tasty. The spice was awesome, spicy, but not overwhelming. The flavor was really unique as well. The portion size was large, I left completely full and still had some to go. I'd also recommend getting the Paratha bread with your meal. It's amazing, sort of like a cross between naan and a tortilla. The only smallest of complaints I can think of is that the mutton, with the bone in, took up a lot of space in the curry without offering much meat. The meat that I did get off the bone was amazing immediately and fell apart in my mouth. A little bit more meat and I would be content. The service and everything else was great. I'll come pack here next time I'm in town! read more

So surprised, but reviews here and in Google gave us advanced notice to be pleasantly surprised. Madras Cafe is a lil south Indian gem in Marlborough along Memorial Drive at the southwest corner of the 52nd Street NE strip mall that delivers without fanfare. But its plain decor understates the great food to be had (4.25 stars after only one visit). With the help of playfully helpful Raj our waiter, we three ordered their Chettinad Chicken Curry, Fish Moilee and Chicken Mughlai with steamed basmati rice and paratha bread. All the mains' flavours and textures were wonderful, and very different from each other. Paratha is different from naan, but equally great. Now that our favorite Raj Palace has lost its Tamil chef, we can easily swing over to Madras (or Supreme Dosa) for our south Indian fix... Aftertaste holds true, and that we got more than expected was amazing. One noticeable short-fall was that the dishes were a mite short on meat and fish, and heavier on sauce. A better balance here would further distinguish them from the pack... Their weekend buffets have enticed us to go back! Raj suggested we arrive around 12-1pm to test drive it. Happened to pop by Madras Café on Saturday and there was a lunch buffet for only $11.95 plus GST. This lunch buffet was a simple one but it had papadums, pieces of roti paratha, different condiments for the dosa like sambar, a vege soup, a chicken chetiinadu curry, a cauliflower cooked with spices, 2 kinds of basmati rice: white and a chettinadu rice. The Chettinadu rice was spicy with slices of green chili. Delicious and spicy hot! What was also neat was that the potato dosa was also included in the buffet! They are fair-sized ones too, bigger than your usual dinner plate. Eat your dosa with the coconut condiment and the different hot condiments from the buffet like the sambar. It was so yummy! Raita was also provided as an add-on to your food. Dessert was Coconut halwah, not too sweet. We decided to also take home a mutton biryani and an egg curry - both were stupendous! The lunch buffet is for Sat & Sun only. Loads of free parking outside the restaurant in the strip mall. This South Indian restaurant impressed us. Highly recommended if you like Indian cuisine but want something more than just the typical Chicken Tikka Masalas. We were on a short visit to Calgary when we stumbled upon this authentic South Indian cuisine restaurant . I tried the Mysore Masala Dosa and it had just the right amount of punch. The sambhar was really good too. The Ada Pradhaman was the best I've ever tasted in North America. As most other reviewers have said that the service was good, but the interiors are simple. This is probably my most visited restaurant in Calgary. Don't be fooled by the size of the place or the ambience or the service.This is what I call the cheap and the best South Indian food in Calgary. It's a Tamilian restaurant but Telugus like me or infact any other person who is from South India or likes South Indian food will definitely like it. The weekend buffet is 10$ which is nice. The ala carte ranges from South Indian tiffins to Biriyanis. Having lived in biriyani capital of the world i.e. Hyderabad, I am a bit choosy about the taste of biriyani. This is no Hyderabadi biriyani but the preparation is different and the taste is awesome. All the tiffins like Idly, Dosa and Vada are up to the mark. I generally end my meal with a coffee or tea and both remind me of home especially me being an addict of Bru coffee. Stopped here on our way to the airport before flying back to California. Thank god we did, one of the best meals we had on our trip and definitely the best in Calgary/Banff. Food is authentic, service is genuine and the flavors are perfect. We had chicken 65 (white meat with delicious spices that is deep fried but not oily, ask for a side of mint chutney), garlic rasam, onion/chili utthapam (pretty spicy, so watch out) and the chicken mughali (so, so good). Perfect meal. Apparently the chef came here from Spice Hut in Sunnyvale, CA to open his own joint. This place is legit for vegetarians & non-vegetarians alike. read more

Being born and raised in Dubai, i know Indian regions and their speciality food because we have countless Indian restaurants in Dubai which serves different cuisine. Chennai which was once Madras is famous for their variety of yummy Dosa's, Idli, Vada, Different variety of rice dishes, and the lentil soup (Sambar) which is unique. I visited this restaurant with a native Canadian friend and i was disappointed with the location (I'm a Real Estate investor in Calgary so i know which strip mall i was at), once i walked inside the restaurant i was shocked with the decor and the setup inside and immediately asked my friend do you really wanna eat your meal here. He convinced me to try the food and not judge by it's location or ambience. I tried their Mysore Masala Dosa, i can't explain how yummy it was. The peanut masala inside, dosa crisp and soft, chutney's & sambar. It just blew me away. Then, i tried their Chicken Kothu Paratha even i was full and the kothu paratha turned out to be as amazing as it tasted in Dindigul Thalappakatti Biryani, located in Al Karama, Dubai). While coming out of this restaurant, i remembered this quote. Don't judge a book by it's cover :) P.S : I request Madras Cafe Management or the customers who visit them to let them know that they should sign up with skip the dishes and uber eats for home delivery which will be a win win situation for the management and Indian Food Lover's. read more

Whenever I want to try light vegetarian food I look for South Indian restaurants in the area. In North America outside the fine dining establishments, the South Indian restaurants are mostly small in size with light decor and small table chair setup. Madras cafe is such an establishment, small in size, light in decor. On to the food I am here for. Ordered a Mysore Masala dosa. Though I know but they were prompt in letting me know about the peanuts content. Mysore masala dosa with chutney on the insides and potatoes was very authentic. So were the coconut and peanut chutney served in the side and the sambhar. The masala tea as an afterthought turned out to be really good. Go for food and taste. read more

Hands down the best south Induan restaurant I've eaten at outside of Chennai. Great service, tasty food and generous portions. The first time we ate here we had the buffet. Spread was great and so was taste. The second time we ordered ala Carte. The rava masala dosa and vada were simply superb. The tiffin combo( i dont remember what it was called) was scrumptious and portions were really big. My only complaint is the not-so authentic sambar. Interiors are not great,but food is really wholesome and tasty. Also must mention great service provided by Raj, one of the owners and server too. Very helpful and friendly. This is one of the best dosas I have ever had. I ordered a chicken vepudu dosa and it was perfectly crispy with a not-too-spicy, flavorful chicken blend, and was complimented wonderfully by the sambhar and two chutneys. The place is very small but homey and quickly got packed! But it was worth the wait. It's a simple place that gets to the point with great food and a friendly atmosphere. We ordered the chicken 65 for our appetizer (with another appetizer - plain dosa), falooda and a sweet lassi for our drinks (included in the Groupon! very unusual), the chicken mughlai and the coconut fry for our entrees, and the gulab jamun for dessert. Everything was amazing and I'd highly recommend all of it - especially the dosa and the chicken mughlai. We informed the server of our Groupon right away and still received fantastic service - our server was kind, helpful, and quick, even when it was quite busy.
