I recently wrote a review about Mutts and Moms and gave them 1 star (5 stars for helping save animals' lives, -4 stars for the forceful removal of a dog from the home of Ellen Degeneres' hairdresser). I got accused of "hating the (Mutts and Moms) pet adoption lady." For the record, I think that what M&M does on a day-to-day basis should be commended, I just didn't agree with the way the situation was initially handled with Ellen Degeneres. But the thing to remember is that there are a lot of pet adoption agencies out there; most of them are doing good work everyday and never getting the recognition they deserve. So I'm going to point out a good one for you: The Sam Simon Foundation. They have an Assistance Dogs Program which rescues dogs from animal shelters and humane societies to become Hearing Dogs for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Along with that, they have a Pet Visitation Program using dogs in training (to become Hearing Dogs) to visit with residents of Assisted Living Homes located in neighboring communities. Dogs that do not complete training are adopted out as "Career Change Dogs" to families who would like a nice companion. The Sam Simon Foundation also has a mobile clinic which provides FREE spay/neuter services to cats and dogs belonging to low-income residents of the City of Los Angeles. Their state-of-the-art hospital on wheels features a surgical suite capable of sterilizing 25-40 cats and dogs a day. My good friend (I can't have pets where I live now) adopted the most adorable, well-behaved dog from Sam Simon and she has nothing but good things to say about the organization and how the adoption was handled. They even have follow up events for owners and their dogs to come back and visit with each other! (My friend is looking for a doggie Halloween costume for their Howl-o-ween party!) I can't believe how amazing and pure this foundation is, that helps low income families find a second option for their furry family members that isn't death. My little brownie is 12 years old now, and over the course of the year grew 2 very large mammary growths on her tummy that were slowly taking away her quality of life. Her vet wanted over $2,000 for the removals and it wasn't something I couldnt afford as a young college student. Sam Simon saved Brownie's life, did the operation in a couple hours, sent her home with medicine and she is on the road to recovery. Everyone was so sweet and pleasant. It was definitely a new experience since it isn't an actual clinic, rather a mobile surgical room, and you may be nervous and scared when you first arrive but I assure you with all my heart, these people care about your pets. Words cannot describe how amazing this foundation is. About a year ago, my dog (Roo Roo) grew an odd lump around her lower abdominal area. She was about 9 years old at the time. I took her to the vet, and although he provided helpful insight, I was not financially stable enough to actually perform the operation. I tried to think of various ways to save up money for her since I was a student at the time, but it seemed like it would take months before I could save up the amount that was needed. I almost lost hope and was very disheartened I could not do anything about Roo Roo's misery. I was then told about the Sam Simon Foundation. I checked out their website and decided to give it a shot. I actually did not expect that they would ever call me back...considering how many phone calls they probably receive in a day. I was very very excited when I heard a voicemail from them. I immediately called them back and e-mailed (since you cannot directly call the work office). They answered and asked for me to come in the next day at 7AM. They perform all of their work in a mobile truck; which is truly astounding. The employees are also very friendly people, who really look like they care about the cause. They were so helpful and I could really see the effort they put into ensuring the foundation follows through with its goals. I personally was never about to meet the vet, but I wish I could have so I can thank him for the amazing work he performed on my dog. Roo Roo had to undergo two different surgeries, and both were completed without further complications. Her wound healed and It's almost like she never had the masses! I took my 8 month old Shih zu/pug here today to get neutered. I was under the impression that he was only going to be neutered, but they also gave him his shots so he would be up to date and they microchipped him too. Everyone was very friendly. There were about 10 people there with their dogs so they only take a certain amount of people. I got lucky because normally there is a waiting list, but someone else had canceled so I took their place. When you get there you have to wait in line. Once you reach the front, they hand you a paper and have you fill out all the information. The process wasn't long at all. I was there at 7:15 and was done by 8. My puppy was very scared the whole time. He has separation anxiety so I normally leave him with someone he knows. So today was out of the ordinary for him. The gentleman who helped me was very nice to not only me, but he was very gentle with my puppy. He gave my puppy his shots while I held him and I guess he did them pretty great because my puppy didn't jerk or jump from it. At this point I had to put my puppy in his crate. He was still scared and cried a little. I felt awful, like I was hurting him. The gentleman could see how I was feeling and gave me comfort by telling me that this is the best thing for him. I knew it was good for him, but I still felt bad until the gentleman assured me that these things actually help my puppy. They give you a specific time to pick them up and they let you know that if you are not there in time that they will hold the dog at the local shelter. They are strict on this rule so make sure you follow their instructions. read more

The Sam Simon foundation is an excellent foundation. I am so thankful for their care and services. I helped many, many low income people get their animals fix through SSF. At one point 4yrs ago I was completely broke, no job, no savings, nothing. I needed to get our 4lb yorkie neutered and if you own very small animals, you know how fast their teeth will rot away. I was terrified because our little guy is 4lbs and was so worried that he would die while under sedation during his surgery. We waited with our stomach in knots and once he was done, I immediately got a call saying he was ok. They also did a dental on him and pulled quite a few teeth and did a cleaning. We went to pick him up and by the time I got there, he was up and ready to go with a cone and antibiotics. I couldn't have been happier and the staff was amazing! They even called me to follow up and make sure my baby was ok! I am so grateful for SSF. Prior to my experience with my yorkie, I had worked with them too, but the foundation was being ran by someone else and they were definitely not as great. Hannah is the new coordinator and she is amazing. The organization has done a full 180 and is a whole new foundation. The follow up, care, staff, programs are amazing and I believe having a savvy, knowledgeable person running it is very important. Unfortunately, they can't help everyone and they are so backed up, so they try the best they can, but trying to set an appointment now is so hard, but that doesn't mean they are not trying to help as many people as possible. I truly wish they could expand and have more mobile spay/neuter vans, and clinics to help all the people in need. Especially with our economy these days, there are more people in need of help. So many animals die in the shelter everyday because of over breeding or people who can't care for their pets (and of course the idiots of the world who shouldn't have any pets), but if there were more groups or programs like SSF, maybe some day the senseless, needless killing would stop. These wonderful people saved my pom - he is 6 years old with a collasped trachea, but the problem was kidney stones- he is to little to pass them and they were blocked. I went to several vets and was quoted $2,500 - i don't have that kind of money and was desperate to figure out a way not to put the dog down -i sent several emails, with a copy of the x-ray, and Sam Simon got right back to me and set up the surgery. My dog is doing great and would not be here if it wasn't for this wonderful organization. I am eternally grateful for this organization. I'll start by saying that my darling Mittens is now in heaven, but this Organization did everything to give her a better life. I had Mittens for 11 years, I had never owned a cat before her. I made a lot of mistakes when caring for her. One of them was not getting her spayed. I didn't get enough knowledge, I thought it would hurt her. Little did I know it would eventually take her life. She had never been sick-ever! I kept her indoors, I fed her well and loved her to the end. When she was10 approaching 11, she had an odd tumor on her belly, it was actually her breast. I never dealt with vets except for a check up here and there, she wasn't acting sick-but I began to worry. I took her to a few local vets who looked at it and said coldly it looks like Breast Cancer and handed me a sheet with outrageous fees and no payment plans. I didn't realize how heartless the world of vets could be. Her tumor began to open, turning green and smelly. My neighbors and I cleaned it with peroxide, and I called feverishly day and night searching for someone who could help my baby. After calling the Humane Society, I asked about a free clinic for animals. There were free clinics for people, surley there had to be one for animals. They referred me to Sam Simon Foundation. It was a miracle. Dr Mori, is a saint. He has a lovely gentle bedside manner. He's warm, honest, and he knows how to give you the straight facts. Mittens did have breast cancer and the prognosis was very slim. Over a months period she had two surgeries. The first removed the tumor and spayed her. The next removed all of her breasts which was quite painful for my angel. At the time we didn't have the resources to determine if the cancer had spread to her lungs. It's a mobile vet, and they had limited resources on the facilty.Their equipment is state of the art, and the doctors are one of the best. Because of the size of the tumor she was expected to live 3 months. She died exactly three months later. The cancer had already spreaded to her lungs. My baby had a very good three months, and I really believe that it was because of the excellent care she received at Sam Simon Foundation that gave her a good three months. She ate hardily, she was running and playing, and it was as if she was never diagnosed with cancer. Then that fateful day came, when her breathing became shallow, and she suddenly stopped eating and drinking, and within four days my baby died in my arms. The day Mittens was dying, the Sam Simon Foundation was in Hollywood. And, Dr Mori gave me the grave news-but again he had a very lovely bedside manner. What made me have courage was that he explained that it was like bricks laying on her chest and she couldn't breathe. He encouraged me not to let her suffer. I was scheduled to put her down that afternoon, the administrators found me a local vet, but she died in my arms as we entered the hospital. It will be two years in August since my angel went back to heaven. Sam Simon Foundation, thank you for helping my precious baby. These people love animals. The entire staff is warm, compassionate and truly caring. They are ever so gracious, offering water to the clients on the hottest days, and lots of support. Did I mention that everything was absolutely free? Free surgey, free medicine, free biopsy. And, they offer educational pamphlets about spaying and neutering that could save your pet's life. The staff is totally knowlegeable and compassionate. I am now an animal activists, and I'm working on setting up The Mittens Foundation-in memory of my angel. I now have two precious kittens, and I got my girls spayed there a year ago and I'm taking all the right steps to make sure they have a long and healthy life. read more

I'm Vera, & Baby is my beloved , sweetest Cat. She is also my Service Animal". She's 13, and developed a lump on her abdomen. There were also a few small knots. Well my biggest fear was that Baby got Breast Cancer. I had a female years ago that also contracted breast cancer. Now mind you, Baby was fed always healthy, loved to eat her fresh grass I grew, etc. She also was always an indor cat. Well the lump on Baby ended up getting infected within a week, a horrible smell, and I freaked! I am on disability , and couldn't afford Vet bills! What to do? Baby STILL had life in her eyes, I just knew she still had life to live! Then on Google I found the Sam Simon Foundation! It was like the sky opened up and Angels were singing. They took Baby in immediately, and cut out her massive growth etc., did a biopsy,gave meds, and were so gentle & compassionate. All were very professional! The Sam Simon Foundation truly cares about animals. Recently, I was laid off from my job, so we found an opportunity for free dog grooming for our dog, Charlie Bear. The inexperienced groomer accidentally cut him, and the wound was not healing. When I took him to a low-cost vet clinic for his shots, the vet tech told me it looked infected and he probably needed stitches. Because I was out of work, I knew expensive surgery from a vet was out of the question. I contacted the Sam Simon Foundation, and they were wonderful. We had to drive about 20 miles from our home at 6:30 a.m. to their mobile vet clinic set up in the parking lot of a Ralph's. Dr. Mori looked at our dog, and confirmed he needed stitches. After verifying I was receiving EDD,my dog was admitted for surgery. I picked him up a few hours later, but was a bit surprised when the vet tech was giving me eye drops and antibiotics for the dog. Eye drops? For a neck wound?I was worried and confused. Well, imagine my surprise that the Foundation not only sewed up his neck wound, but also had taken care of a tumor growth on his eye. I feel he received not only as good as,, but better, care than his last private vet clinic provided. They scheduled two follow up appointments, which were kept,,and his sutures came out today.When I am employed again, I will definitely be donating to this marvelous organization that went over the top to help me, and my dog, in our time of need. read more

What an amazing foundation Mr. Simon started. I can only wish that there would be more places like this in the US! My poor Chloe was diagnosed with a sinus tumor in January 2013. The vet did a sinus x-ray and chest x-ray and told us that we could have the tumor removed but it would only come back. Since we had just spent $500.00 for the diagnosis our funds were depleted to treat her any further. We did find a great supplement for her called NuVet Plus. It's all natural vitamins, minerals, herbs, antioxidants, bioflavonoids, fatty acids and aminoacides - all which combat the ravages of free radicals and provide immune support. It's $60.00 a bottle and I'm on the third bottle for her. She is running around like a puppy, she eats like there's no tomorrow and her bowels are regular. (Did I say she is a Bichon Frise and is 14?). I think she was misdiagnosed now because the lump on her nose area drains every so often - just a bloody mucous fluid - and then goes flat, so a cyst is what I'm thinking. BUT, again we need more places that would help people whose pets become so sick that they can't afford medical help. I dont know where to start because words cannot explain how HAPPY & GREATFUL my dad, mom & I being able to be taken cared of by Sam Simon Foundation. Thank God for good hearted veterenary (Dr. Moorey,not sure of spelling) and all the Staff (including Edna, Carlos, Jackie) and all of them in the mobile clinic that took an excellent care of our 8 yrs old chiuhuahua Chloe who had hernia on both sides of lower abdomenal area. My dad didnt know where to get the money ($900 plus) for her surgery and couldnt help dad financially either due to unemployment. My dad had only been a registered member of PAWS L.A for less than a year and Mr. OMAR OLIVARES had helped us along the way(excellent ways) in getting Chloe in to the Sam Simon foundation. He made the whole process very convenient for my dad by means of great communication thru emails and phone calls with me. They had taken away sadness and stress that we had with Chloe due to the mass getting bigger and bigger and had a hard time walking already. We cant thank all this wonderful foundation and organizations enough...words just cant express the excellent mission you have for animals/pet/family!!!
