A coworker and I had the opportunity to do lunch at this restaurant. For those who know King City it's a bit hidden but convenient hop off the 101 highway. The outside is ok though nothing special and the inside is quite airy. I noticed they have an additional room for seating. This was my first visit based on photos others had posted to Yelp. Their burgers and fries looked decadent. The fries however looked like way too much so I went with the Deluxe Smash Burger and it did not disappoint. I only did one patty and despite expecting it to be thinner than I might like it was not. The price is a bit higher than I expected but the overall meal was ine I didn't look back on with regret and I would probably do it again. The customer service was fine, though not table waited, You order at the cash register and then pick up the food there. The turn around on an order was good and the portion on the fries generous. I would note, one word of caution. Not sure what brand of Ketchup they use but it should be avoided or atleast taste tested before you douse your food in it. It didn't agree with me or my coworker. But on the other hand, the BBQ at the table was delicious. I feel like it might be made in house but it was the delivery system for both the burgers and fries. To management, keep it simple Heinz on the ketchup. Overall experience was good and will likely revisit again in the future. read more

I've been here a few different times for different reasons, the food is amazing, it's definitely a place you go to splurge a little when it comes to the price of food but you get what you pay for. The ribs are amazing (keep in mind I am not a huge fan of ribs), the chicken is out of this world & to be fair I've only had a smash burger once but that was amazing too. The atmosphere is great, they have different kinds of entertainment monthly & pop-up events, they're very community oriented... our small town has needed something like this for YEARS! My only negative comment and I've even brought this to the owners attention is their Michelada's cups are too small! Lol! BUT the flavor makes up for it, just means you have to order more than 2 or 5!!! Lol Whatever you order cover it in their BBQ sauce and don't forget to ask for their Jalapeño Ranch! Yes!!! We were passing through town and decided to stop here. We were not disappointed. We sat at the counter and enjoyed the atmosphere. I ordered a salad with tri tip and added some of their delicious bbq sauce! It was amazing! I looked over and my husband had devoured his bbq chicken sandwich as well. The jalapeño ranch is to die for. Service was fantastic, we really enjoyed talking to the waitress. Great experience and great food! Oh and some good beers on tap even if we didn't drink. read more

Henry is the chef/smoker on a Santa Maria grill and a damn good one! I had: brisket, ribs, tri tip, pulled pork, and they were all AWESOME! But the CHICKEN was AMAZING!!! If you're in or anywhere near King City, The Rustic Barrel is 100% worth the stop. This place feels welcoming the moment you walk in, and the food just seals the deal. I tried the tri tip, chicken, and ribs, and honestly, everything was on point. The tri tip was juicy, tender, and packed with that smoky BBQ flavor you hope for. The chicken was perfectly cooked (not dry at all, which is rare), and the ribs were fall-off-the-bone good with just the right balance of smoke and sauce. Aside from the friendly staff, the rest of the experience was just so-so for us. We had stopped to watch our team in the playoffs as we weren't sure that we could make it to the next potential stop in Salinas. As it was, we were early for even the pre-game and could have pressed on. I recall eating in this building several times years ago when it was Keefer's Inn. The Rustic Barrel is trying to walk a line between being a BBQ place and a venue for watching sports with a wide variety of craft beers on tap. The ambiance seems like it's not quite finished. The prices are on the high side we thought. Dear Hubby and I split the two-meat platter. We ordered the pulled pork and the tri-tip. Both were okay, but not outstanding. We had a big accident when the BBQ sauce squeeze container wasn't dispensing very freely. We didn't have a toothpick to try to clear it, and upon further squeezing, the whole top flew off and spit out a whole lot of sauce onto the tray holding our food. The bartender came over in due course, apologized, and brought us a clean tray. That's their "plate" system - a plastic serving tray with fresh paper food wrap on top for cleanliness. This is odd; I was looking for the photos I could swear that I took to recall the sides we ordered. No pictures? That's really odd. We did have a smallish piece of cornbread to split. We ordered half & half of fries and onion rings. The rings were better / more tasty than the fries. Another Yelper had mentioned a really good dessert they'd had here. No desserts at all available the evening we were there. Dear Hubby had a sampler of beers / ciders. He ended up leaving more than half of the ciders; too sweet for his preference. They didn't have anything approaching a Hefeweizen, which is the style of brew he prefers. That seemed odd with so many different beers on the menu. All in all, the experience wasn't quite what we were hoping for, plus our team was losing badly, so we paid the check and headed up the road in the middle of the third quarter. Sorry no photos. I really remember taking some of the food at least. It happens; thankfully not often. read more

First impression was that the restaurant is very welcoming and clean. We received a friendly reception and quick directions when it was obvious we were here for the first time. Next came the order. We were blown away by the portions and presentation of the food. And the flavor? The sauces? So amazing. We had the Barrel fries with tri tip and a pulled pork sandwich. It was enough food to feed six of us at least so we'll be enjoying this for several meals. The service was spot on and for the amount of food you receive, the price is completely reasonable. What a great dinner we had. Ribs were melt in your mouth delicious. Tri tip was cooked perfectly and so tender. The chicken was smoked so well, and all the meat tasted so good, you didn't even w want the BBQ sauce, but it sure was good sauce. Mild and spicy available. Dessert was a Cinnamon spice cake with tres leches frosting. Delicious. Don't drink, but apparently there are many choices of local tap beers for those that do. Owners were beyond friendly. This place has only been here 3 months. A very comfortable place to eat, relax from traveling and watch some sports. We were so happy we could watch Little League Softball. I had a burger from here last Sunday and I have not stopped thinking about how good it was! The service was great and the food came out super quick, which was appreciated because we had kids lol the person working was great about giving recommendations when we told them what we were looking for. Everything is great just brought the wife and kids for an early dinner and had some drinks and the kids had fun playing the games. Chill, entertaining atmosphere good variety of drinks to choose from and one of the best burgers I've ever had....plenty of parking to choose and enough space in the back if your driving from far and have a rv. Food was okay but very greasy. Even the mac'n cheese was swimming in oil. Burger was greasy and onion rings were too. They need to raise the oil temp for frying the rings so they don't absorb so much oil. Tri-tip was tough. Service was very friendly. read more

Went in around 5pm Wednesday. First impression in clean and with a lot of room for more tables. The menu was varied with a large selection of beers. The place has a lot of potential and I hope they reach it. O.G. Smash Burger was tasty and juicy. Pricey Couple of suggestions if you have people ordering from the counter post the menu on the wall and have a larger and more clearly marked area instead of having individual menus. There is a dark bar area in the corner use it for Karaoke instead of in the dining area. Loose the canned sodas and put in fountain drinks. Food portions were good but use smaller plates instead of large plastic trays and utilize the space better a lot was wasted. Service was good and friendly. read more

This is a new place and very promising. They had some issues with their new smoker today so the meat was overdone but the flavors were spot on. The people were very friendly. The sides were good and we got a sneak preview of their upcoming excellent desserts! We also had great beer. I loved the SLpajamas and had a stout for dessert. This place is amazing - the ribs!!! So good! We stopped on a roadtrip with our two young, loud kids and were delighted to see that the restaurant had a kid zone with toys and games to entertain them before we all tucked into some really excellent bbq. We've been lucky to have had some great bbq in life, including in Texas and St Louis, and these are truly some world class ribs. The sides and apps were also big hits; the kids devoured the mac n cheese. The couple who own this place are so nice, and my wife loved the beer selection. We ordered a side of ribs for the road before we left - really hope to stop here again on the way back. read more

The food was tasteless and unseasoned. My husband's tri-tip sandwich was like eating shoe leather, full of gristle and overcooked. The smash burger was flavorless. The bun was ho-hum, and the meat was unseasoned. The fries needed salt and I would suggest some seasoned salt. Service was almost non-existent. The ambience was severely lacking. Weeds in the planters around the building, cracked asphalt. The inside was cavernous and lacked decor, the tables and chairs were sparse and the wall was covered in TV screens (with only 2 working.) We miss the old Keefer's restaurant! Overall, never going back! read more

Don't let the exterior detour you. From the moment you open the door, you enjoy the aroma of red & white oak bbq. We had the smash burger & pulled pork. Both were outstanding. The folks that work there enjoy what they do and make you feel like family. Definitely coming back (probably tomorrow for the once a week, 16 hour smoked brisket.). The drinks are unique and amazing. And the food wow. I love their smash burgers and their Tri tip is always flavorful. Also you have to try their jalapeño ranch it's awesome. I went to eat to the rustic barrel with some friends and I ordered the barrel fries they were absolutely delicious so full of flavor and the portion was amazing.. the only down side was that next time around I ordered to go for my husband and I and our fries came home in such a small portion the fries only had cheese small amount of tri-tip no Mac& cheese no coleslaw and no pickle overall it looked like they did everything to try and just put together something to try and sale it .. they did give me a side of Mac& cheese and apologized for the coleslaw that they had ran out of it .. by then I made some mac&cheese my self and ran to kfc for coleslaw myself .. so if you do happen to wanna eat at the rustic barrel don't order to go supper bad experience read more

This was my second visit to Pappy McGregor's in about six months. On my first visit (evening), we walked in without a reservation and were quickly seated at the last available table. The place had a lively atmosphere, and it looked like part of the space turns into more of a dance floor later in the night. I had the French onion soup, raw oysters, and the pot pie, all of which were good. The pot pie in particular is something I would recommend. This most recent visit was for lunch on a weekday. There were plenty of open tables, and we were seated right away. Parking was easy, which is typical outside of busy weekends. The experience this time around was more mixed. We wanted to order oysters Rockefeller, but they were completely out of oysters, which was disappointing. I ordered a black and tan, which tasted fine, but it came with a design on top that I wasn't expecting. Not a big deal, just different from what I had in mind. For food, my girlfriend ordered the blackened salmon and said it was good. I went with the corned beef and cabbage. The corned beef itself was flavorful and served over mashed potatoes, which were well done. The cabbage, though, wasn't what I expected. Instead of a more traditional preparation, it was grilled with char marks and topped with au jus. The texture came out a bit rubbery and didn't really absorb the flavor well, which made that part of the dish underwhelming. Service was okay but not great. My water ran empty at one point, and I had to ask for a refill. We also ordered boneless wings as an appetizer and asked for extra ranch, which didn't come out until we reminded the server. The biggest issue, though, was something I noticed from our table with a partial view into the kitchen. An employee had their shoe up on a shelf that appeared to be holding clean dishes, which didn't come across as sanitary. I also saw food being adjusted on a plate by someone who didn't appear to be the cook. I can't speak to what's happening behind the scenes in terms of handwashing or procedures, but visually, it raised concerns. That part of the experience honestly left a bad impression. Between that, the missed items, and some inconsistencies with the food, it changed how I feel about coming back. My first visit had me excited to return, but after this one, I'm not sure I would.
