It's good sometimes to get off the highways when driving, and give yourself some time at least to…read moreglimpse the hidden treasures around you. Going from Yeovil to Poole via Dorchester, you can either zoom down the A37 or select the A352, which passes through sumptously named spots such as Seven Ash Common, Minterne Magna, and Cerne Abbas. If the A352 is an 'A' Road, then my garden path is an Autobahn. But it slows you right down and you begin to have a few William Cobbett moments as you dream of rural rides. Cerne Abbas is a tiny village with a couple of pubs and The New Inn offers accomodation from £45 B&B for one person. It is a 16th Century former coaching inn, a grade 2 listed building, with a comfy olde worlde bar, a fine garden, and some very interesting bedrooms. The restaurant serves home-cooked food 7 days a week, and though I didn't try it (I ate in the Royal Oak - see other reviews) fellow guests seemed to be enjoying. The landlord gets up early to rustle up a massive fry-up for your breakfast. I guess the New Inn gets a lot of its custom from tourists who go to see the Cerne Abbas Giant. I wouldn't go out of my way to go there again, but no regrets that I did. Pace of life : 1 mph.

Recognition in the major guide books has come and The Good Pub Guide awarded us County Dining Pub of the Year. The village is within easy reach of Weymouth, Bridport and Shaftsbury. It is also the perfect stop-off point for those coming to or from Devon and Cornwall. Journey-time by car from London is approximately 2 1/2 hours and there is a good train service to both the aforementioned county towns where taxi transfers can be arranged.

It was very welcoming and clean with all new bathrooms with cozy robes, complimentary beer, fizzy water, biscuits, and we enjoyed some great food. Breakfast was included. Also very dog friendly! They provided a dog bed for the family dog. Oh and very lovely beer brewed on side! Will be back for sure!

An absolute gem of a pub in one of Devon's prettiest, most tucked away coastal villages. The…read moreMason's Arms is, quite simply, a fantastic place in every sense of the word. I've stopped off for a snack or a quick drink a couple of times, and it's always really impressed me, and the lunch my parents and I had recently ranks as one of the best pub dinners the Andrews family can remember. Their crab sandwiches were fresh, as were the fish in their delicious creamy leek fish stew, while the ploughmans was huge. Desserts of chocolate and pecan brownie and banana fritters with toffee sauce were gobbled up. Ok, it's not cheap for a Devon pub, but the food is worth every penny - there was hardly anything on the menu I didn't want to scoff down. The pub itself is a charming sprawl of wooden rooms, and a small seating area out the front. It's homely and although the staff run a slick operation, they're still friendly and helpful. The pub was recently taken over by St Austell Brewery, so there's a good range of their beers, plus a couple of guest ales. This includes one local beer brewed in Branscombe. It's quaint, delicious, comfy and sits in one of the most stunning areas of the Devon coast. It is, quite simply, a perfect pub.
