Staff and teachers here go above and beyond! From the first day and everyday you step on to campus you are greeted with warmth and enthusiasm. My daughter started here in the third grade and has thrived both socially and academically. She is now in 5th and we have been so happy with her progress. Everyone here has been so positive, kind, and professional and all lead by example. I have been thoroughly impressed with the administration, teachers and the foundation. We are so grateful for The Rhoades School supporting our son with a midyear transition. What stood out the most in the application process is the kindness and genuine care shown to our son. I only will be giving this school a 1 star review because they DO NOT HAVE GOOD STAFFING AT ALL!!! and my daughter has been crying to me every morning and everyday she has been coming to school about the same person talking either about her hair or how she wears her clothes if u know who ur kid is please check them. this is so sad because this is lower school and they are acting so RUDE and CRASS! read more

Though San Diego has many public schools that have high ratings, the ratio of kids and the litany of problems that normally come from public school, i always wanted to send my child to a private school. We looked at all the top private schools, La Jolla Country Day, Francis Parker, Evans and Del Mar Pines. La Jolla Country Day felt cold and the teachers in K and 1 when meeting prospective parents didn't have the enthusiasm and energy to keep up with kids and all of the parents who were in the same group as us, none signed up in the end. We applied and enrolled in Francis Parker due to it's reputation but found that the academics there were horrible rudimentary to the level of public school. Also, there was a strong bullying issue there so we left after only 1 month. A friend of mine introduced us to Rhoades and when you get there, we knew that this was the school for us. The atmosphere is welcoming and inviting, there wasn't the elite preppiness of the some of the more expensive, bigger name schools. Rhoades focuses on 2 things) that we love. First is their academics - all of the kids have a home room just like in all schools but all kids are broken down in smaller groups according to their abilities in that subject so all the kids are pushed to their potential. My child is currently working on math problems that when i compare to other friends kids is a grade and half above him. Secondly and i feel even more important is their EQ. From K, they are taught to respect each other, use their words, learn how to work around problems and not just break down and become emotional. As parents, i think we all want our kids to grow up and not just know things but to be successful and nothing makes me happier when i see my child be resilient and move past a problem. The school doesn't just have this program but they implement it. I know i wrote a lot but 2 quick things more. 1) The K teachers Mrs. Ruppert and Mrs. Sugarman are Exceptional. They've prepared a method and even authored a childrens book on how to use the "4 Step to Friendship". 2) When i'm at school, when i'm at birthday parties and play dates, i can say from personal experience that the kids there learn EQ and how to get along and be respectful with each other. I've not once seen bullying and kids trying to dominate others. Unfortunately, I can't say the same when I go to birthday parties for kids who go to other schools. Coincidence. Maybe. But i believe that it's due to what Rhoades has taught our children. read more

While this school has good academic opportunities for students, it also lacks ability to deal with student conflicts. The bullying problem at this school is not great, and resulted in many students leaving the school. If you're child is being bullied, most likely the problem will not resolved and instead casted away as a minor issue. Speaking as a student, this school has left me scarred for life. read more

We moved our child here from public school and have been so happy. We loved the community and staff at our old school but there was no faster paced or gifted track and my kids were not challenged. Rhoades has leveling so that kids are placed in a group that is pushing them. My kiddo is so much more engaged now that the work is interesting to him. The curriculum and teachers are awesome and class sizes are small. It's a nice community of people who value education. read more

As the director of an academically based preschool in the area, I can tell you that this program is top notch. With the public school ratios being at an all-time high, I am frequently asked by enrolled parents where they should send their child to Elementary School and my answer is always Rhoades. The education your children will receive here will exceed your expectations and the administration is wonderful. If you are looking for a great private school in North County that is not religiously affiliated, you have found the best option. read more

A couple years ago my daughter, then in sixth grade, was attending what we felt was a good north San Diego County private school. She approached me one day toward the end of that school year and complained that she felt she wasn't being challenged enough academically in just about every subject. She asked me if we could consider looking for an alternative school that would be more committed to academic excellence. I agreed and we started looking at and visiting just about every school in the area. After several field trips and talking to many neighboring parents and students, we both concluded that the Rhoades School in Encinitas was the finest lower and middle school in North County. My daughter applied for and fortunately was admitted to the Rhoades School's 7th grade the following year. She is now in 8th grade and has been attending Rhoades for almost a school year and a half and it has been EVERYTHING she had hoped for. She has been far more challenged, and is learning so much more in every subject including math, science, the humanities and technology. Her math and writing skills have improved tremendously. She entered her first science fair ever and went to the county and regional finals. She has learned incredible programming skills on multiple platforms and has thoroughly enjoyed it. She was encouraged and supported to enter a regional creativity contest combining the humanities and arts disciplines and won an award there as well. In short, my daughter's entire scholastic experience at the Rhoades School has been INCREDIBLE: incredibly challenging, incredibly fulfilling and incredibly fun. read more
