While visiting the High Desert Museum with a friend who lives in Bend, he noticed my son's interest in the lizards and other desert animals on exhibit. My friend said we should stop by the the Reptile Zone. Boy was he right! Not only did my son and I get to hold many of the lizards, snakes, and other animals within, but the owner and staff were crazy nice. He was able to hold a small snake, a large snake, and a bearded dragon. He was in heaven! Thank you and I will spread the word around the Chicago area. read more

I myself have many reptiles, crested geckos, gargoyle geckos, a leechee gecko, leopard geckos, some frogs, anoles, and skunk geckos. My bearded dragon recently passed sadly. I have been to Reptile Zone, on average, 2 times a month for the last 14 months, and it has always been a positive experience. The owner Jeff, while I can see some being put off by him because he is a bit on the dry and crusty side, is an awesome guy with a wealth of knowledge that anyone who loves or wants a reptile should take advantage of. He will judiciously give his opinion, sometimes without asking, but it is seldom wrong. Most of the time, he will just point you to a credible resource if he isn't sharing his experience. Nobody is always right, but I would rather take advice from someone who has been around and raised reptiles most of their life then someone who merely shares a 2nd hand opinion. I compare what he says with what other experts in the field say, and he is generally right on the money. His venomous snake collection is awesome, and I love his Burmese Pythons, they are honestly some of the sweetest and friendly snakes I've "handled", I use that term lightly since they are huge snakes. ;P He has live feeder insects and lots of supplies and live animals t purchase as well. Animals you can buy range from day geckos to tortoises, and many other types of reptiles you may not see other places not all of which are for sale though, you just have to ask. Parking could be better, but it is what it is for the location. :) I don't have anything negative to say at all, I love Jeff's story in how he was given the opportunity as a child to help out as a pet store, and learn about animals, and he gives back in the same way at his store by allowing people who want to learn to volunteer at his store, it is really awesome. Once again, I would rather have a crusty experienced guy telling me what he believes is best for a reptile than someone at a pet store chain who has no idea, or someone online who may or may not know. While I may still research online from credible resources, I almost always would rather ask someone in person who has the experience, and again weigh it against my own experience and other experienced people, that's how you can make a good decision. I have been using Jeff and his store for about two years to buy food and get advise on my Giant Day Geckos. The owner and employees of this store do not wear masks or practice social distancing. I've been in the store several times when the owner had no mask on and was coughing frequently. Employees have also come right up to me and started talking without a mask within 2 feet of me. In addition the young teenagers that work there complain when asked to help and talk behind the counter instead of helping people. I stood there waiting for the feeders I bought while the workers talked behind the counter and played with the animals. They didn't even notice I was still waiting until I had to say something. The products at this store are overpriced compared to other reptile stores and a majority of the animals in the store are not even for sale. I would not recommend anyone going to this store, the owner is rude and inconsiderate. They obviously have no regard for the state wide order to wear a mask during the pandemic and my family doesn't feel comfortable going to The Reptile Zone any more for these reasons. read more
