The massage leaves a lot to be desired. I'm a former massage therapist and my daughter and I just visited Berkeley Springs for a girls weekend. We booked Swedish massage sessions. My massage therapist did a lot of light compression and what felt like poking at my muscle tissue, but definitely not the long superficial strokes that define a Swedish style massage. And when trying to end session pressing on my solar plexus point, he was way off the mark, somewhere in the ball of my foot. My daughter said she enjoyed most of her massage but for some reason the last ten minutes or so, her therapist started dong some really deep tissue work on her neck and shoulders and she woke up the next morning unable to turn her head with pain. I'd be careful booking massage here. The place in general was a little run down and not sparkling with cleanliness. The pedicure and foot massage were very good. read more

Booked a couples whirlpool, which was nice to be able to look out the windows while we relaxed. However, the gal who led us to the room failed to warn us about the intake screen, which grabbed my husband's hand, and his ring got caught on the screen when he tried to take his hand away. His hand is bruised and swollen to the point he can't remove his ring. A verbal or written warning -- or better yet, a COVER -- could prevent injuries. Also, when we were checking out, the gal asked if we wanted to add a gratuity, which puts the customer in an uncomfortable spot to say yes/no and how much. Why not leave envelopes out for people to put cash in IF they choose to leave a tip, vs. having the employee ask the customer? read more

My girlfriend and I spent the weekend in Berkely Springs for Mother's Day. We loved the hotel, but the Spa was something to be desired. First off, I had specifically requested a female masseuse and when I arrived, I was greeted with an Elderly (75 yo at least) man with severe arthritis. Not only did I feel uptight and uncomfortable, but I also felt bad that with his condition he was having to try to give a massage. The massage was probably the worst I have ever had, and the poor guy was trying his best but I could feel his joints crunching when he applied pressure which was extremely uncomfortable for me and I was then also worrying about his comfort level. I have no idea how the management thought this was acceptable. Then upon checkout the front desk mixed up my girlfriend's bill and mine and charged us wrong. She was unfriendly and just shrugged when we brought it to her attention. We settled up the bill between us because she did not offer to refund the over charged person. Very strange and unfriendly front desk. I would recommend looking at the roman bath place and trying to get a massage there if you can. read more

Can you give zero stars? This was the worst spa experience. The staff is incredibly rude. The paint is literally peeling off the walls the building isn't maintained. We liked the spa but left a bit unsure about the experience because of some general disjointedness / 40 minute wait in between the soak and the massage. No one told us what was going on, so my boyfriend and I hung out in robes feeling a little exposed in the waiting room. Our massages were wonderful once we got there! Very disjointed and awkward operation. The services themselves were good but the process was annoying. No privacy in changing room - unless you change in closet-like toilette "stall", or the shower. No privacy as you sit in the lobby area FOR A LONG TIME in your robe along with anyone else who is waiting. It's a bit breezy in a robe and flip flops. For couples massages they take you down from the 4th floor to the 3rd, in your robe. It's not very pleasant leaving your warm massage room to trek down a cold corridor and up an elevator to the 4th floor then to get int he whirl pool and go back to your changing area. read more

The hot tubs are above ground and very challenging to get in and out of. I was scared that I wasn't going to be able to get my wife out of there. There are no grab bars to hold onto when climbing out. The staff were unfriendly and unhelpful. They said that it was our fault for not judging the depth of the tub correctly. There was no empathy let alone apology for having had such a bad experience. If you are elderly, obese or have any joint problems, STAY AWAY. read more

Me and 4 family members got deluxe facials today. Wow--they were great! Michelle gave me my facial and she was very attentive to my skin's needs. She asked great questions in order to give me the best treatment. The facial also came with a feet, arms, hands, shoulders and neck massage as well. The entire process was about 50 minutes long. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. I felt relaxed the entire time. The building is also super cool. If you want a great view of Berkeley Springs, this is the place to go! My wife and I were hoping to get away for a weekend of reconnecting. We were able to do so however it was over how poor our experience was at the Renaissance Spa. While our hotel stay and dinner at the country inn we would give 5 stars, the spa experience was a complete miss and would not recommend anyone here to this spa. Stay at the hotel sure, but schedule your services next door at the main and Roman bath houses. These staff had everything Renaissance did not; namely customer service, friendly positive demeanor and professionalism. 10/10 would recommend the state park operated spa services! My candid review of Renaissance: We entered at the front desk and were shown back to the locker room. They did give us robes and offered flip flops, light spa music was playing but the locker room was small with limited area or privacy for changing. The shower was additionally not functional so unable to shower after services.. Next we were scheduled to start with a whirlpool bath; the attendant asked if we wanted to pay an additional $10 for salt and oil added to the bath. It would seem odd to try and upcharge us during our services rather than having that option at time of booking and prepaying for our services. We chose to try it anyways and were led to our private bath room. I was very displeased to find that the room was in poor condition, tiles cracked or missing and a hole in the side of the whirlpool surround pieced together with what looks like packing tape. As we were about to start we took notice to a hair floating. I left the room to ask the attendant for assistance and when she arrived she rebutted that it was previously cleaned . We were offered to switch baths but did not wish to make a fuss rather wanted to remove the hair and continue. They restarted the jets for us and we climbed in. After 5 minutes we noticed a clump of hair sticking to the side of the tub-yuck! Again we asked for assistance only to be rudely and defensively told it was our hair. In speaking with the manager we explained it could not have been as neither of us have short black hair. We were able to have a productive conversation with the manager but still felt uneasy about the experience thus far. A staff member walking by (Anne) rudely interjected and stated "so you're done then." Her lack of customer service added additional discomfort to an already unhappy start. We were led by the manager to our next massage appointment, trying her best to lift the situation. While we waited in the quiet area the bath attendant traveled down and could be overheard speaking to staff about us as customers. Very poor taste as someone in the customer service industry. We were soon met by our masseuses where to our surprise the rude staff member (Anne) was assigned as one of the individuals in our couples massage. She brought negative energy in the room which made it hard to relax. She was irritable when asked questions and did not ask level of pressure preferred. In fact when I vocalized preference for firmer pressure she responded that it was not possible as a I was matched with a staff based on service preference. Interesting since I was not asked my preference...She was quick to hurry us along after the couples service. I did not feel heard by her and I feel as though I wasted my money. I left the appointments feeling unfulfilled and frustrated, more tense than when I entered. Please heed this warning. Save your money, and even more valuable than that, your time! Thankfully I was able to end the trip well- Kelli and Heather at the Roman bath house were jovial, relaxed and just the pick me up we needed after a poor day previously. We then went over to the main bath house and were greeted by Leslie Jessie and Cheryl T all whom were playful and excellent professionals. You could tell they truly enjoyed their work. read more

Very poor experience and would not recommend anyone here to this spa. My husband and I decided to get away for a weekend of relaxation and thought we would give this a try. We have previously tried the hotel Hershey spa and let me just say these two places are not even in the same league; save your money and go to Hershey it's worth the wait. We were greeted by two friendly ladies at the front desk and were shown back to the locker room. We were provided thin robes and flip flops which was on par with expectations. The locker room however was very small hardly any space for myself let alone others and no where to change privately. Two other ladies walked in as I was changing and as the door opens you can see in clear as day from the hallway that I'm disrobed. After exiting we were shown to our whirlpool bath however I was very displeased to find that it was in poor operational condition. Tiles cracked and large hole in the side of the tub. As I was about to get I noticed a hair floating. I asked the individual attending to the whirlpools for a napkin or tissue to remove it trying not to make too much of an issue out of it. They restarted the jets for us and my husband and I climb into the cramped tub. 5 minutes later my husband I noticed a large collection of hair float up from the filter and stick to the side of the tub. Immediately grossed out we climbed out and asked for assistance only to be told it was our hair. Respectfully it was not- neither one of us have short black hair. Another staff walked past as I was sitting in the hallway and rudely stated aggressively that "they work hard to clean those whirlpools you know". Shortly after I was approached by what seemed to be the manager and I appreciated her professionalism and attempt to rectify the situation with a solution focus mindset; unfortunately the lack of professionalism from her staff had already compounded the already not so relaxing experience. My husband and I were then taken to our massage only to find out that the aggressive unprofessional staff member was one of the masseuses and assigned to our couples massage. She refused to work on me did not ask if I had preference of male or female masseuse and would not make eye contact. When asked for clarification of instructions she was rude and short, clearly agitate or bothered by her customers. My husband asked several questions and her agitated response and tone would have appeared to make him feel uncomfortable for asking. She disregarded the areas of focus he asked her for and the the level of pressure he requested. My massage was good I had Todd and really appreciated his positive energy. He was a breath of fresh air compared to the other individuals we interacted with. He paid close attention to my arthritis needs and did some great lymph drainage techniques. Following the massage we were handed water and the unhappy staff member couldn't seem to move us along faster. I ended the day with a facial which was a nice experience, Stephanie did a nice job explaining the process to me and added in a little extra massage for my legs, arms and head/neck. Unfortunately the good parts were overshadowed by the initial poor experience and it would be very difficult to convince me otherwise no matter the discount or refund. To me, massages are like pizza--I'll take 'em all. This one was fine. The pre-massage soak was nice, too--in a private room way up in the treetops with great views. The staff was friendly. Those are my pros. Here are the cons: the whole entire layout of this spa is awkward and not conducive to peaceful relaxation. The locker room has no privacy wall, so when someone walks in, everyone in the waiting area can see all the way back to the showers. The attendant handed me a robe that didn't quite fit my body, so when my husband and I were herded down the hall, into the hotel elevator, and down to another floor of the hotel for our post-soak massage, I had to struggle to cover my bits the whole way. Then the appointments were running behind, so we had to sit in a dead silent little room for half an hour with another almost naked couple feeling just as awkward as we did. Then the mediocre massage, then back out to wander the hotel in our ill-fitting robes. A bit too much work for a spa experience. read more

I have been going to Renaissance Spa with my friend for about 5 years now, and we love it !! We go about every 4-6 weeks. The spa is Very Clean !! Staff is friendly and very helpful! They never rush you the whole experience is low stress and very relaxed . I love the tub experience!! Big private whirlpool tub with big windows and fantastic views!! I have had several therapists over the years only had one or two that just weren't for me. Doesn't mean they aren't good but just not what I was looking for in a massage. So when I get one that I click with I stick with them.. All the therapists asked for instructions before starting. They ask what you are looking for, something specific or just stress relief. Always have discussions regarding pressure. Once massage starts the therapists always check's in during session to make sure pressure is enough or to much. Even the therapists I have on a regular basis continue to ask to make sure I am happy and get what I want! Right now Anne is my girl !!! My friend has been using Hendrerica ( I probably spelled her name wrong sorry) . She says she is fantastic! And my friend is pretty particular about her massages. We have had almost all the services, pedicures manicure facial all very well done by professionals. I haven't done a review for them before felt like it was time to sing their praises!!! So if you want to treat yourself or do a girls day or weekend!!! I highly recommend Renaissance Spa !!! read more
