Where have you been all my life? As an earth lover, I try to do everything humanly possible to do my part. The store is exactly what I've always wanted to be able to do so. I love that it's locally owned by a female entrepreneur, I love the mission, and I especially love the demeanor of the shop owner. All that being said, I can see how with one person only managing the store, there might be a little bit of a wait because the business owner does her best to give everyone the time and attention that they want and need. Or if the one person in the shop doesn't hear the alarm go off when someone enters and then said person makes zero noise, that person may not get any attention. I have been a loyal customer of the refill shoppe for years now and just truly love this gem of a store in downtown Ventura. I love that every scent and product I get for myself here is customizable but it's also a shop helping to reduce waste and teaching us recycling our containers vs adding more trash to the planet. I've leaned a lot from shopping here and that's a gift within itself. For first timers definitely peruse the store and you'll see there are plenty of already curated scents, gifts, and sets ready for you to walk out with. If you have the time and are feeling adventures I'd definitely encourage you to smell all of their different oils and scents to create your very own customizable products for your home. My two favorite things to make here are linen sprays and body washes/body gels. I'm a sucker for a smell good home and body so this shop always has me coming out smelling like heaven. Pro tip: my go to scent combinations are papaya & lily mixed and leather & white musk (you are welcome). There is also a scent that they used to have called "melissa" not joking, but not sure if they have it anymore but it was one of my favorites. Lots of great scent combinations for every person unique to your preferences. Aside from me loving the products & the decor inside, the staff here are truly so personable, kind, and sweet. I've only had A+ professional interactions with everyone that works here. Such nice and helpful people. Rachel has helped me customize my orders a few times now and she's very lovely and sweet. Always makes new customers feel welcomed. I also adore the owner Michelle, she's very passionate about her business and every exchange I've had with her has been lovely. Happy to continue to support this business as it's definitely one of my favorites downtown and I continually bring in my friends with me who become repeat customers. I adore this store. I always grab my flower blend oil here, and it makes my clothes smell amazing without being too strong. A few drops on a dryer ball is all it takes. Called one day not long ago. I've always seen this store but wasn't really sure what they sold. I was looking for body oil for a friend. I had no idea they make it for you right there or I'd have been going there for years. I asked the young lady on the phone a few questions....it was 10 minutes to closing time. So I hightailed it down there. Super cute little store. The young lady working (and I only say that because compared to me, she was young enough to be my daughter) was so sweet and knowledgeable and helpful. With her expertise, she suggested a few options and in minutes I had a custom made bottle of body oil. It was a gift for a friend. I ended up walking out with a bar of soap to go with the oil and a candle for myself. My friend ended up taking the candle too....because that's the way she is. No thank you . No nothing but that's the way she is. On her way back to Hollywood that night she got a flat tire off of Moorpark Road in TO. She asked me if I could drive out and help. I did. Couldn't do anything that night. She didn't have a spare and somebody took my jack. Over the next three days I drove out there every day. Bought a new jack and tire iron. Removed the tire. Found the cheapest replacements possible. Took the wheel in. Had the new tire mounted then took it back to the car to put it on. To this day....she still hasn't said thank you . Maybe I'm asking too much or maybe it's just the way I was raised. Because no matter what...even if I didn't like something.,...I always said thank you. If you have to ask someone to say thank you....it has no value. Just empty words. But that's just who and what she is and I don't have to spend time or energy on people like her. So...I've chosen not to anymore . I'll be back in that store when the time is right. read more

Finally stopped in here today for the first time, after being gifted items from here a couple years back. There are so many wonderful options to choose from and there are products for everyone. From bath and body, to skincare, to home and laundry. They have products that I didn't even know existed as far as sustainability goes. They sell a lot of items, many of which are sold by the oz - you can bring your own vessel or purchase theirs for an additional cost. One of the nicest options was for the products which have a "scent" such as lotion, you can customize the scent from their large assortment of essential oils. They have both single scents such as vanilla, sandalwood, lemon, etc. and blends of scents that they have paired together. You can also create your own custom blend! The lady was very nice and helpful, and patient with me as I decided on what gifts I wanted to choose. This is definitely not an inexpensive place but the products are of high quality and you are really making a difference with regard to sustainability and ethically sourced products. read more

My daughter and I love The Refill Shoppe. Although the service wasn't quite what we would've liked in the past, it has definitely changed. Jessica & Allison have taken care of us the last few times we've been in the store. They made us some great essential oil bottles that we absolutely love. This store was a fantastic discovery. The interior has a antique apothecary decors and feel and an incredible selection of items. Please take your time when you first come to the store and really take in all the scents and products. I came with a friend who explained picking a scent and choosing an item - I chose geranium linen spray - the scent was clean and fresh smelling and did not have an artificial smell. The scent was not overpowering. I chose the 4 oz bottle and was so pleasantly surprised that it was a glass spray bottle- again the quality detail in this store is apparent. You just feel luxury and quality as you browse through the scents and options. I loved the creativity of this store as well. On the floor there were handmade soaps beautifully designed. Absolutely love this store. We live in LA and go up to Ventura for a short day trip with the kids somewhat regularly. Found this store while wandering around. It's gorgeous inside and so much fun to combine the scents. My son who is 7 even had a great time picking out a soap. I asked if they had violet which wasn't listed and they did. I ended up making a violet lotion which smells amazing and isn't overpowering. I also love that the ingredients are green (we don't use products with high toxicity that you often see in other similar stores). It's our new go to for lotions and soaps for our house. read more

I really liked getting my containers filled with soap. I was able to get 31 oz of hand soap that smells like lemon verbena just like the soap I buy from l'occitane at a fraction of the price. In the future I think I will get body wash too. They also have bar shampoo and conditioner here. I was able to get 5 percent off because I bought more than 30 oz. I brought two containers that they refilled at the business but you can also buy some containers from them. The service here was great and the store is very clean. read more

I was so excited to go to the Refill Shoppe for my first (of what will be many) visit! The manager was so friendly and explained how everything works. We left with some goodies to try at home as we make an effort to eliminate wasteful plastics in our home. The soap, dryer balls, sponges, and wine stopper, and other goodies are just a start. I absolutely love the concept, love the store and the products. The staff however, just have never been very friendly and that goes for my experience today as well. The girl behind the counter was not very friendly and it seemed to bother her that we were there ( and we were the only customers in the store). She wasn't very receptive to questions and seemed to want us out of there. We weren't greeted when we came in and she didn't even ask for my phone number for the points program at checkout. I had to remind her and she acted surprised like I knew about it. Regardless, it just makes me not want to shop there when the staff isn't very welcoming/inviting or polite. It just makes for a really unpleasant experience. Again, the products and concept are great but the staff really are ruining the experience. read more

I went in to browse the shop(pe) this morning and had a great conversation with Jodi, a friendly and knowledgable employee, who gave me some honest advice about bar shampoo versus the refillable liquid shampoo. Although I did not purchase shampoo this time around--I came without a refillable bottle and have so many at home that buying one seemed silly-- I did leave with a soap-dispensing dish brush that looks very sturdy and costs around $10. Thanks to Jodi and to the diverse product line at TRS, I will be back. I am grateful that Ventura offers visitors and residents an alternative to mass plastic consumption though I recognize that higher pricing might be a limiting factor for many folks who would otherwise be shopping here. I am hoping that as individuals support businesses aiming to reduce plastic production and waste, the shift from single-use plastics to more sustainable containers becomes mainstream enough to force large corporations to change their models so that access to reusables is not limited by price. Pricing is my only reason for 4 stars rather than 5, though I know that is not something that the store should be faulted for. read more

This place is amazing! So amazing I came here twice in a weekend. You can customize various liquids like lotions, body/linen spray, shampoos/conditioners and hair serums! It's pretty expensive if you buy a bottle there, but for my first time, I decided to buy a classic perfume bottle with the pump (and the perfume was free with purchase). You get to choose from a huge array of scents and essential oils! My favorite scents were gardenia, plumeria, black tea, rose and sea moss, and oils were bergamot (smells like earl grey!) and cocoa. The workers here are super nice as you choose your scents, they put a fan by the bottles of your choices and let you smell them together. Then, they add in the scents one by one and adjust it to your liking. They also give great suggestions to what you're looking for: fruity, sweet, floral, etc. The second time, I got some argan oil hair serum and it was amazing, and makes my dry hair super hydrated and feel healthy (doesn't hurt that it smells heavenly too). As for bottles, just reuse your old ones, or buy some cheap ones elsewhere if you don't care about ~aesthetic~. They have a rewards system so be sure to sign up! read more

I love the concept & refill here every few years. However, it took me 40 minutes to get 4 products refilled & it cost nearly $40. Upon a bath with one of the products I had scented, the scent dissipated within 10 minutes. I found out about this store when looking up reusable straws for my tumbler. I came in to check out the reusable section and discovered this store has all kinds of soaps and products you can buy in bulk (!!!). I rarely see this kind of thing! Then, you can scent the products according to whatever you like! To top it off, the woman at the register allowed me to get a free sample of the hair serum so I could try it out! I definitely recommend this place for people who want to try new bath and body products or people who have severe allergies because this seems like the place to go to get very specialized products (besides the internet, but here you will get personal attention). read more

The only person behind the counter at the time and had us wait over 30 minutes while she assisted every other person in the store. We ended up just leaving instead. Omg I just discovered this today and I'M IN LOVE. They have everything from laundry detergent to face lotion and they even have a baby section! Their supply has such a wide span that you want/need everything! Also, its eco-friendly so that's always an added plus. The way it works is that they sell containers for you to buy or you bring your own and then you fill it with their bulk supplies which are sold buy the ounce (not too pricey either, for example, the conditioner is .55 cents an oz). Most their options are unscented which then you get to create your own scent. They have a huge selection of scents and you can choose up to 6. The concept is awesome! From cleaning supplies to self care products, the refill shoppe is quickly becoming my one stop shop. This is an amazing place! I wish they had this store in my home town. Check out the website to find out what you can refill here. They have a lot. Bring your own bottles or buy bottles there. The staff is friendly and helpful. I brought my own I got the shampoo, conditioner, spray lotion and hair serum total &17. I am loving the spray lotion and the scent! I added plum tea scent I chose "perfect". I also enjoy the hair serum I got bergamot scent "perfect" but I feel I should have chosen "strong" because it doesn't smell. The shampoo doesn't sud much but it cleans well. The conditioner works, I got verbena essential oil. I noticed that of you choose the man made scents they are stronger then the essential oils so if you like your products to have a strong smell add extra essential oil. read more
