I have gone in twice for my Artwork AkA Tattoo. I gave Marc Roda my idea of what I had envisioned in my mind and a picture and he brought it to life each time. Each one had my parents hand writing in it and he did an amazing job working that into the design. I got my second tattoo here, with an 18-year gap in between. It was an okay experience overall. The artist agreed to see me that day, and gave an accurate guestimate of how long it would take her to do the guy before me. The atmosphere of the place is about what you would expect. Metal posters and abstract art on the walls. Couple of leather couches. An open area the artists work in. I was a little surprised by how professional an employee was talking to a customer about how her ear was shaped wrong for the kind of piercing she wanted. My tattoo was done in about 40 minutes. It hurt, but all tattoos hurt and I already knew that from 18 years ago. The artist did squirt down the chair before I sat down. No one discussed a price with me until the very end. I got the impression that it was normal for the artist to make a judgment call about the price and quote it to the checkout guy after she is done. My tattoo 18 years ago cost $100. This one cost $150. Given 18 years of inflation, that seems about right, so I didn't say anything when they finally quoted a price at the end. Be prepared to make conversation for forty minutes as you are a captive audience. read more

This will be my second review. After getting a memorial tattoo by Emma two years ago, I have since been back for several more tattoos. The shop is super clean, and every time I've been there, I've had an enjoyable experience bantering with Emma, Matt, and the other people that work there. I recommend the reef to anyone looking for a tattoo parlor, and while I have never had a tattoo done by Matt, I have seen some of his work and it's spectacular. Emma has done now at least four tattoos for me in two years, and I love her work, I love her dedication, and pretty much I give her free reign with what ideas I have. So where do I start... I was so happy with my two nostril piercings and my septum done all at one time on 4/20/21. The piercer had a hard time grasping the septum to screw on the ball. It seemed like forever lol. But I soldiered through it. I had to have surgery so I came in on 5/4/21for retainers in all 3 holes. No metal allowed during surgery so I was told. Well, I woke up the next day for surgery 5/5 and the right nostril retainer was gone. My surgery was waaaaay before they opened. So directly after surgery I went back to them and had them put the original metal back in. I was pierced with twist screws in my nostrils but then they switch to "L" screws instead. Then a couple days later I woke up and the ball on the septum was missing. So now I have to go back up there and allow someone to "torture" me as I'd been healing for some days now and the septum didn't hurt anymore. Not until the ball had to be screwed on again. This time I asked for extras in case it happens again so I dont have to come all the way back. She gave me some. I can't tell you how many times the right nostril fell out while I was asleep. So much I was afraid of scaring/irritation I just went to back to them and guess what? I after waiting for over an hour. I asked was there an issue? I was told they only had one piercer (male) and the other one (she) was on her way. She was the one who pierced me initially so I was pissed they would have me sit there that long to replace the "L" jewelry. I ended up walking out the door and found a nearby tattoo/piercings shop and they put labrets in my nostrils. And I dropped a couple hundred on a nice septum ring and I don't have to worry about a ball falling out there isn't one lol. Cost of piercings at The Reef $170 and I tipped her $20. read more

Highly recommend this shop! It is very clean, and the tattoo artists are super friendly! I went to Emma for a small finger tattoo. She was recommended to me by a friend and I ended up connecting with Emma over social media. She took time to respond to me and address my questions as well as reassure me with my concerns. Emma was very up front about what comes with getting a finger tattoo and made sure I was educated on what to expect. She fit me in the next day and was very prepared when I came in, already having the design drawn out from an example picture I sent her. My favorite part about the experience was how she really took her time. I am not the easiest person to tattoo, I am a bit squirmy and I am known to pass out but she handled me like a champ. My daughter and I came to get some tattoo work done by Marc. I have followed his tattoo workmanship for years and finally made the voyage from Iowa to Illinois to see what he could do. The shop itself was very well organized and had a modern touch to it with great graffiti artwork on all the walls. You can tell this is a creative hub where what they do is done with great pride. This shop was easy to find and well located. As far as the tattoo work... my daughter got a simple two word ink job which took like 10 minutes. My tattoo work was more intricate and I still feel Marc took his time to do it insanely right, yet it felt like it took under an hour. Marc took the time to show me how he is able to do his tattoo design work so that each customer's artwork is done with great precision and detail. Communication skills LACK here. It would take my artist Rodrigo 2 days to reply to a single text and then just stopped replying in all. Getting a tattoo is an extremely exciting event, he scheduled us in, canceled our appointment and never replied when trying to rebook. They didn't give me a chance to advocate for myself and the owner immediately raised his voice and refused us service which again is illegal and a class c misdemeanor. The shop is clean and the artists are decent people. I got a touchup/ rework tattoo completed. My artist forgot what I was coming in for and then his frustration with himself over it shows in the work. Shaky lines, not solid color. He kept taking smoke breaks which really got the work area hurting after a while as it would dry up and he had to wipe a lot. Overall...OK experience. I certainly wasn't mad at the price, but will be shopping other places before deciding if I want to come back to this studio for my next piece. read more

i went about a month ago to get my septum pierced! they immediately took my temperature and told me to sanitize my hands! everyone was wearing masks (properly as well!!!!) which was so nice to see. the worker at the front desk was so kind and friendly, and made conversation with me. my piercer and his apprentice were also super kind, patient, informative, and funny as well. they gave me so much information and even gave me advice on a prior piercing i got elsewhere! the service, price, and atmosphere of this place is amazing!! it's very well decorated and very very clean, overall an amazing experience and i can't wait to come back! read more

I would not recommend getting a piercing here. A piece of jewelry fell into my ear while getting my daith jewelry changed by the piercer in January because he had my lay flat on my side rather than sit up straight. I didn't want to leave a review because I understand accidents happen and I knew he felt really bad. However the new piece of jewelry has now moved and because he didn't close it all the way the open piece is now in my ear and I have to go to another piercer to hopefully save the piercing. read more

bummed out. the inside of the studio is pretty cool but the overall service was disappointing. I went in for 2 sternal microdermals. There was no private piercing room that you usually see at other tattoo shops and I was out in the open the whole time. The piercer's hair was constantly in my face as she dug these dermals into my skin. it took around 45 min and one had to be redone because it was not straight. both piercings ultimately rejected and i just got back from having one removed at another, more trusted, studio. Overall, overpriced for low quality jewelry and unprofessional service. will not return for any service in the future. read more

Randomly found them online and decided to give them a chance. They weren't busy so I got in right away which was nice. I got 3 tattoos. Unfortunately I am only happy with one of them. They were small, simple tattoos. One of them is blown out, so my simple tattoo is now going to have to become something bigger to hide the ugly ink leaking outside of it. Very unhappy with it! I really like this parlor. I've gotten 3 tattoos here. All were walk-ins, I had no appt. and they've been able to fit me in same day within a few hours every time. Reasonably priced, great artists. The staff is funny and inclusive. I went in last night with a general idea, nothing specific. I told Emma I wanted a Hamsa and let her do her thing. I love this tat, she does stellar work! I went there in March to get a cartilage piercing, because a friend of mine got pierced there and had no problems. It started with the piercer telling me I couldn't get the piercing I wanted because of how my ear is shaped, which was a good thing because I thought that showed that she knew what she was doing. So she drew dots on my ear of where I could actually get pierced. I ended up getting 2 flat piercings, and they are super cute. My experience there was initially good. HOWEVER. I'd like to preface this by saying that I only have one other non-lobe piercing, and also I don't believe my piercer works there anymore. So right after I got pierced I distinctly remember telling my friends that I didn't think the jewelry was long enough to accommodate swelling, but like I said, I believed she knew what she was doing. She put two studs in that had stones on them, and I think she was just going for a cute picture versus actually practical piercing. So about 2 months later I had to go back to the piercer because my ear was so swollen that the front of the earring popped off and I was in danger of the piercing closing. When I went in, I asked them if they thought the bar was too short for swelling. They acted like it was OBVIOUSLY too short like no one would EVER make the bars on a new piercing that short, even though I literally got it pierced at their own place!! So they put new longer jewelry in place of the one that fell out and I was fine. They charged an extra $10 to fix their mistake but whatever, I was just happy that I still got to keep the piercing. Then, another 2 months later, I realized that on the other earring, my ear had grown over the back of my earring, once again because the jewelry was too short. This time I didn't want to go back because I was so done and frustrated with this place, and I was scared they were going to tell me I would have to go see a doctor, because it was fully embedded. So I just ordered longer jewelry on Amazon and fixed the other earring myself. There are probably good piercers there, I don't know, but the fact that this place allowed this piercer to work there and make this obvious mistake, that I've had to deal with for months, is ridiculous. Having only one other professional piercing, I shouldn't know more than your piercers. I'm giving 2 stars and not 1 only because I hate to write such a bad review and everyone besides my piercer seemed to be nice and knowledgable, but I have no clue. read more

I went to this place because a friend of mine had 2 tattoos done that were cover ups. She both of them by Marc and they looked nice. I wanted to get a lotus flower covered up on my wrist and an orchid flower. The cover up was supposed to be a butterfly in 3D and I had a picture of the orchid flower that I showed Marc. It looks horrible!!! I'm embarrassed now for anyone to see my arm. The butterfly is not in anyway in 3D and my original tattoo was not fully covered up. Also the orchid flower doesn't look like it and everyone who sees it asks me are they strawberries!!! There is no depth to the colors and the color isn't even what I wanted or asked for. The orchids are just one color instead of a range of colors like the pictures that I gave him Marc went so deep on my skin that i have scars and keloids developed. I went back after almost 2 months for him to take care of the area that was not covering my old tattoo. All he did was shade it with more color but nothing else!!! I can still see my other tattoo. Now I'm stuck with this horrible tattoo with no way to fix it. I would add a picture of my tattoo with this but I don't even want anyone to see it. That's how embarrassed I am by how it looks. It's too bad that people can get away with bad work and not be held accountable for it!!!! I would have given zero stars for the review if it would've let me. If there ever was a time when I wish I could sue someone it would definitely be now. Go at your own risk!!!! read more
