This is one of my favorite places to hang out during the summer. Usually there's not a lot of people either cuz their busy studying for summer classes, or because it is tooooo hot. The good news is that the planned renovation includes adding a sand volleyball court as my family is big into beach volleyball. Bad news, we are not happy they are making the space for swimming much smaller and removing a diving board leaving us all to share one, which will leave us dripping along side a long line waiting to dive. As a UCD alum, I've been taking my family to the REC POOL for last 25 years. We just sat and watched the video of what's coming in dismay. Maybe the point of making the useable space for swimming much smaller is to discourage families from going as it was intended to be for unmarried students without family living close by. My 10 and 12 year olds have celebrated birthdays here over the past decade. The original 1966 pool design seems more innovative than the new 2019 one that seems very basic with two small rectangle pools being planned... I guess a lot of cement will need to be ordered to fill in swimming area?!? Wow. Then again maybe the video was not scaled to planned size very well. I would have only renovated the 50 year old locker rooms and added the beach volleyball court with tall thin netting around it in an attempt to keep driven leather v-balls from rolling into pools or students studying on their beach towels. Where are our creative architects? Where's the water slide, slip & slide OR Zip line into the pool? Insurance issues can be avoided with planning. What about water aerobics in a 4' level shallow end for those who have joint pain or who are athletes mending an injury aquatically? What about a low and high dive diving board area? Did they consider inviting ideas and raising funds by local fundraisers to pay for implementing a much more innovative plan? read more

The rec pool can get a little crazy and loud over the summer (M-F) because of all the kids and the summer camps. I am able to enjoy it a little more on the weekends when it's less crowded. Some things I do not appreciate about the pool are that there is barely any shade!! It's hard to find a nice spot because most people are already crowded under the shade. I also wish they would get new lawn chairs because a lot of them are broken! Other than that, the rec pool is an awesome place to tan, swim laps, or jump off the diving board. read more

COLD showers at very low pressures (have pointed this out multiple times), extremely crowded lap lanes than hickey pool ever was, less lap lanes than hickey and also not standard 25 yard lanes. Not to mention it is only 3 to about 6 ft, whereas hickey was much deeper . Been super disappointed with this "renovated" pool. Daily lap swimmers will be disappointed read more

I love the Rec Pool; the staff is top-notch. I agree with Deb, that an overhaul would be awesome, but even without a make-over I will continue to take my kids there, and have a blast, all summer (and I'll take them here next summer too). read more

RIP Rec Pool. For many years our family has enjoyed the Rec Pool but we fear those days are done. My family and friends just reviewed the video of the proposed changes and we were all very disappointed with what we saw. After four years of planning they decided to make a smaller pool? The polo teams are not happy about it, students are not happy about it and alumni and families are really not happy about it. They clearly intended to remove any access (which existed with the pool since the 60's) to families with small children and there can be no doubt it was done to discourage families from using the pool going forward. They decided to go from two to just a single diving board. That does not seem to be innovative and I can't believe it took four years of planning to make that poor decision. So, in short, neither the competition nor the recreation pool is an improvement. It seems the only innovation they incorporated into the plan is a volleyball court - which of course has nothing at all to do with the pool. It's a shame to the university and the community and we can only hope the video and described plan is changed for the better. None of us have much hope of that... read more
