The ceiling is corrugated tin and the floors and walls are reclaimed barn wood, according to the article in the Courier. You will step on peanuts, which I find mildly schticky, but okay. We bellied up to the bar and enjoyed the company of the barkeep, a friendly girl with an easy smile and a quick laugh. The beers and liquor are all the standards, nothing terribly out of the ordinary for the area. The place was not well-attended, but I don't think many people know about this place yet; anyone we talked to after our visit had no clue it was even there. Hopefully this place will draw some business to the area.

Fantastic beer selection. Excellent food. Reasonable prices. Single speed checks all the boxes!…read more I've stopped at Single Speed several times when passing through, and always enjoyed the experience. The flatbread is huge--at least two meals' worth--as are the salads. Beer's available in full pours, half pours, and flights, so it's easy to sample a few in one sitting. And don't miss the specials--especially inventive soups. There's plenty of seating options, too--a nice patio, bar stools, and a couple rooms full of tables and booths. Cheers!

There is ample space inside and out, and it's all very open and clean, though the inside dining areas are separated into large rooms, which I think would help with noise control when it's busy. We visited around 7:45 on a Friday evening in August and found it remarkably not crowded, but they have another location in Cedar Falls that probably draws a larger crowd. We were at the Waterloo location, which probably caters to a lot of business people and business travelers during the week. We ordered a lot of food for two people, and it was all excellent, but I rate this cool place four stars because all the food came out of the kitchen at once and we were totally overwhelmed. If it had been paced, I think we could have pulled it off, and as travelers, we couldn't really take leftovers with us to have another day. Our server was extremely helpful and patient helping me understand their beverage selections. I enjoy a good cocktail or a glass of good wine, but my beer tastes are even more limited, but SingleSpeed offered up the perfect solution: the SingleSpeed-a-rita. This is made with their Ring Around the Gose, tequila, agave, and lime juice. That hit the spot on a hot Friday night in Iowa!

It's a great atmosphere, pretty decent beer menu (found on a chalkboard up on the east wall), and some good eats. Our absolute favorite part is that they play old rock music videos from the '60-90s. We LOVE that. It's the perfect place to bring parents. I had the bacon cheeseburger, which is good, but I'd love to see more bacon on my bacon cheeseburger. It just had two sad, little slices of bacon on it. And I do dislike when restaurants offer chips and make you pay more for fries. But their beer-battered fries are quite delicious. My only complaint is that the craft beers come out in frosted mugs, which makes the beer too cold to properly taste. I'd love to see some different unfrosted glasses coming out and keeping those frosted glasses for the Budweisers and Coors of the world. When I'm craving a pub burger and fries, this is our spot. And yes, one of these times my parents come to town, we are taking them out for dinner. Who knows, maybe my stepdad will break out his air guitar if AC/DC comes on. :)

A white liquid that came from a breast pump. I'm actually appalled, this is so nasty and unprofessional. I don't care if the customer asked for it, nobody should be subjected to seeing that degeneracy.

I stumbled across this place after making plans to have dinner with some friends at Rudy's Tacos, which is housed in the same corner building. This bar is located directly across the hall from the Lava Lounge and I believe has the same owners. Arriving early on a Tuesday evening there were a few people in the Lava Lounge but no one yet at the Beer Hall. While waiting for a third friend to arrive we bellied up to the bar and were attended to by a great bartender who knew his beer. The bartenders floated between the bars on an as needed basis and one could order something on tap from either bar. Very easy going, very friendly. Now about the beer. Between the two places there were approximately 10 taps including beers from Jolly Pumpkin, Tool and Brouwerij Bavik (Petrus Oud Bruin) and bottles and cans ranging from $2 Grain Belt Nordeast to Bourbon County Brand Stout to Duchesse de Bourgogne. Since I was just back in town visiting I can't speak to the prices very well but they seemed reasonable. On Thursdays they apparently offer beer from another neighbor in the same building, Guerrilla Brewing Company. I wasn't around long enough to give that a try but certainly hope to on the next visit.

They often have food trucks stop by, including La Calle, which is always delicious. There is live music on the weekends (including some metal shows, which my husband loves). Had no idea what to expect from a small town bar, but usually they're pretty good at serving the standard bar food. I wandered in just after noon and there was only one other customer. No sign of a worker, but with short staffing the bar tender was also the cook on this day. Considering that, she got my tenderloin sandwich and side ready very quickly. The meal was served hot, and the taste was pretty good by Iowa tenderloin standards. The barmaid could have been a bit more cordial, but seeing as how business was slow at the time she probably was a bit bored. The prices were reasonable and the place was clean.
