The reviews for Twisted Oak Bar and Bistro were accurate! This classy joint in downtown Statesville has the perfect menu with solid options for any diner. The staff works their tails off to get the orders in and out to the tables soonest but quality is not sacrificed for time. Out waitresses was very patient with us and answered our questions with details. Both the protein bowl and the steak sandwich were absolutely amazing and came at very reasonable price points. We will return here again!

Far picture of dirty air vents

Unfortunately, I wish I could rate 5 stars but this place is definitely not worth it. I was told by several friends that it was a good spot with great food but I have to say otherwise. The service was super slow but mind you they only had one waitress working the entire spot which is only like 7 tables. I believe they share a kitchen with one or two other restaurants since it's one owner that owns Twisted Oak and the old Smokin Southern Cantina on Center St. The restaurant is super small with only about 5 four seater tables, 1 large eight seater and a bar with room for maybe 6. As for the food I'll start with our appetizer, the Seafood Dip, oh my was I disappointed. I thought the black stuff on top of it was some sort of decorative garnish, however, it was just burnt crusting of the cheese or seasoning. The shrimp po boy..... boy oh boy dry dry dry and nothing but bread. It's supposed to be served with a dressing but they didn't put any on it. So if you like crusty, dry French bread be my guest. Now on to the crawfish étouffée. It's served with a garden salad on top of the étouffée I'm not exactly sure why. The crawfish themselves are pretty small and definitely frozen, cooked, refrozen and cooked I don't know how many times. And you can definitely tell my the overwhelming fishy taste. The rice was over cooked to where it was just a mushy mess. I'd say the only thing good here was the cheese bread that came with the étouffée it actually tasted good and homemade. With all that said, we will never be back. I was disappointed because I really had high hopes for this place, only to realize it's not good and stupid expensive. Oh and very dirty air vents that haven't been cleaned in who knows how long

First time coming here and it was AMAZING! we came on a wednesday night, sat at the bar and ordered basic mixed drinks. (they had a good drink menu but we are basic people when it comes to that lol). For appetizer, we ordered the seafood dip which was PHENOMENAL! the bread it came with was soft and delicious, the dip had a little crusty layer to the top. for our main courses, i ordered the blackened snapper and it came with a lemon and caper sauce that was sooo tasty. my boyfriend ordered the shrimp and grits and he said it was the best he's had!! we also ordered a side of these spicy chili and it came with a lime sauce on top, to DIE for!! the atmosphere was definitely a French underground vibe. very ambient, very calm and peaceful!! overall we had an amazing dining experience and will for sure be coming back :)

This hidden gem just oozes speakeasy vibes. Being a Louisiana native, my expectations outside of Nola are low. Our group of five ate out on the patio. Our server, Sylvia, was wonderful- attentive, friendly, helpful and pleasant. We started with appetizers - the bayou cakes, bread and cornbread. The french bread is just like home. And i havent had cornbread like that since my mama's house. The bayou cakes were well liked by everyone at the table. The shrimp and grits was my choice and it did not disappoint. Tasty well prepared shrimp was well seasoned with a delicious trinity gravy and cheddar grits. The poboys were excellent and made on the wonderful fluffy Nola french bread. My daughter had the steak verdant and my other daughter had the catfish. We had a wonderful chocolate cake and creme brulee cheesecake for dessert! Highly recommend this hidden gem.

Surprised and happy to come across this New Orleans restaurant in Statesville! I came for lunch and enjoyed gumbo with warm French bread. Clean and artful atmosphere with enjoyable jazz music playing in the background. I had limited time for lunch - not a problem. Service was prompt

Bloody Mary

We had to come try out the new place! I started off with a Bloody Mary that was actually one of the better ones I've had in Statesville. Hubby got a can of Sweet Josie which is ALWAYS good! He ordered the catfish plate which he says is delicious! Y'all. I ordered the muffuletta po boy. It was FAAABULOUS! I've been looking for a place that serves these sandwiches forever. Having to go all the way to Huntersville just does not do it for me. I am so happy they have it here -and even a muffuletta charcuterie! It's a very tiny place so if you're bringing a lot of people you might want to see if you can reserve the space. We will definitely be back! Oh, and the waitresses are fantastic! So nice and attentive!

The food was really good. And the service was excellent. The restaurant is very clean and the atmosphere has the New Orleans vibe. Small quaint spot below the twisted oak. Serves lots of Louisiana inspired dishes. Give it a shot.

Well, I did kinda...I have passed this…read moreColumbian "bakery" for many years without a second thought and I sure could kick myself for not trying it sooner! The Columbian Bakery+Restaurant has operated in this same storefront for around 20 years but I have never stopped in. I am not particularly familiar with Columbian-style foods and I did not feel there was anything that I would like from their "bakery". Boy, I do not think I have ever been more wrong about anything in my life...memories of past boyfriends start to creep in slowly-haha! I am currently obsessed with Statesville's Columbian Bakery+Restaurant! Yes, I said it! Not slightly obsessed, completely obsessed! I have patronized this business twice this week already and I plan to go there again before the weekend is over! The food is amazingly and authentically appetizing! To date, I have experienced the yummy goodness that is their Beef Empanadas, Tostones, Maduros, and my current foodie crush, Pan de Bonos. Each and every food item is fresh made to order except of course, for the bakery items BUT the bakery items are fresh made daily. The Beef Empanadas are a little meat-filled hand pie and they are so delicious! The pie consists of a thin cornmeal-type crust wrapped around the meat filling then deep fried. The meat filling is finely chopped or minced beef with small bits of potato (another reviewer said, beans, idk which it is but they're delicious) mixed in. It sounds heavy but it is actually quite light because the consistency of the filling is so fine and the outer crust is so thin. These yummies are so good, you cannot eat just one! The Tostones are smashed and fried green plantains. These are a salty side which taste like potatoes and they pair very well with the empanadas. The Maduros are fried ripe plantain chunks. I have had these before at other Latin restaurants and I do love them! The maduros from Columbian Bakery+Restaurant did not disappoint! They are just as good as any I've had and maybe just a little better because they are so fresh when you get them! These are a sweet side with just a hint of tartness. They pair well with any of the spicy foods served at this restaurant but I always eat them as a dessert! My favorite, the Pan de Bonos, are a bakery item but I was lucky enough to stop by when pan after pan of these little delectable puff balls were coming out hot and fresh from the oven. Yesssss! Who doesn't love a light and fluffy cheese bread ball?!? Cheese and Bread! Sign me up every time! But not to worry these addictive little things reheat really well in the microwave. I know because I ordered a dozen on my last visit! I cannot wait to go back to this Columbian paradise right in the heart of Statesville and try out more of their food offerings! The Columbian Bakery+Restaurant is active on social media, both Facebook and Instagram, so check them out! Be forewarned, they post videos of their yummy goodness often! They, also, have an online menu app.colombianbakerync.com for your browsing pleasure. You're welcome! I think I see a trip to Downtown Statesville in your near future! @columbianbakerystatesville @downtownsvl #supportsmallbusiness #supportlocalbusiness #shopsmall #shoplocal #eat-local

I got a last minute invitation to a small house gathering, asked what I can bring and my host…read moresuggested a dish or dessert. I opted for the latter given time constraints, which led me to search out a bakery. Lo and behold, the first resulted in Karen's Cakes & Cafe Pharr. I perused the site late Friday night (9/1), impressed by what I had seen of the photos, which was an obvious display of someone with great cake design talents. I couldn't believe my luck at this being the first result and exhaustion led me to retire for the night. I awakened Saturday (9/2) morning and resumed my task by reading the reviews which ultimately led to a phone call. It was not a regular business day, but as luck would have it, I got to speaking with Karen herself; the first call was an inquiry to find out about placing orders. Karen informed me of what I can order and the call ended thereafter. I gave it some thought and called back a second time; this time placing my order for cinnamon rolls, which Karen stated, "everyone loves". The time arrived for pickup and I got the opportunity to be warmly greeted by Karen, her husband Mike, and my order. I absolutely loved our exchange of conversation. To my surprise, Karen had included a couple of treats; a slice of her iced blueberry lemon cake, a slice of red velvet cheesecake AND extras that were totally unexpected and only found out when we got home. Thank you!! Thank you!! At this point, I couldn't wait to get home and when I did, my daughter, who had accompanied me on the trip, opened up the containers with the cake slices and we dug right into our treats and let me tell you, they were mouth watering and deliciously flavorful AND we didn't stop there; we knew we had to sample the cinnamon rolls and Karen, you weren't kidding about those rolls. They were absolutely and delightfully soft with just the right amount of sweet. It was not long before we decided that this is where I would be ordering my birthday cake. I am now torn between the iced blueberry lemon and the coconut cream cake!! Though I think my daughter has already decided on the iced blueberry lemon. Overall, the reviews are exactly what I experienced; a delightful business owner who had charm and appeal, whose smile was infectiously warm and inviting, who knows her products, swears by her customers' satisfaction, and guarantees that you would love it AND love it we did!! These appear to be the characteristics that continue to make Karen's Cake & Cafe Pharr a successful business for over 30 years. Thank you Karen for the last minute accommodation given such short notice. It was a pleasure meeting you and getting the opportunity to experience your expertise!! See you in October!!

Don't waste…read moreyour time, taste or money at this restaurant when there are two other excellent choices in Statesville. I, first, was introduced to Pasta Amore's food at an event they catered and I was very impressed with their desserts. The food was good but the desserts were amazing! Tres Leches cake and Cannolis! Based on this we decided to add the restaurant to our "Must Try" list...boy, were we wrong! Don't let the beauty of the outside fool you! We were dressed up and ready for a romantic Italian dinner date. Inside is moody and dark but not in an amore way, no, there's no romantic feel to this dimly lit restaurant. It's also confusing inside, like a maze. Staff were at a bar in the dining area on the left when we arrived but later moved to a bar in the main dining room. We were told to seat ourselves which is another source of confusion at dinner in an Italian restaurant. I get understaffed and conserving energy nowadays but is there such a thing as an Italian casual diner? Next, our drink order was taken from behind the bar by shouting at us, "What do you want to drink"? This was very off putting, especially for my dinner date because the server was behind him. I ordered a domestic beer but was informed there were no bottled beers except Red Oak and there was a craft beer on tap that was very close to a domestic taste. I agreed to go with that. As my beer was served, we were informed of the specials then server left. When the server returned to take our order, we were informed that there was one Cordon Bleu left, as well...this was not mentioned with the Specials. We both ordered the Chicken Breast stuffed with sundried tomatoes & spinach Special. This came with a House Salad and choice of dressing but we were offered a Caesar for an upcharge. I had to add on an appetizer order as we were not offered the opportunity. I ordered Fried Calamari. It is one of my absolute Italian favorites! Summary: Beer was good, I had two and my SO had one. I had to ask for the name of it and I only got the name of the brewery...Moon Brew. As I left, I saw a display on another table about the beers, I'm assuming it was an IPA but your guess is as good as mine! Ah, the app...my Italian favorite...Fried Calamari! Um, no, just no....please, do not order it! Definitely frozen but I know this about all restaurants but this calamari is just so bland, even the batter is flavorless. Maybe heated in oven or maybe a microwave but it was lukewarm at best. Worst Calamari I've ever eaten! House Bread and House Salad were subpar for an Italian restaurant but they do give you packets of butter with the bread and they have Blue Cheese dressing. It was edible and I was starving but definitely not the best bread or salad I've ever had! Entrees were good but you could tell it was not fresh or housemade. Both of our plates looked exactly the same and scratch-made food is not conducive to that level of uniformity or consistency! The taste was not fresh either. Again, it was edible and we were starving! $80.00 later, I would have rather ate at any fast food restaurant in town...there's definitely NO AMORE lost here!
