I have lived down the street from The Pub for 1.5 years now and somehow St. Paddy's this year was my first time trying it. Initially, I was bummed that there was a special menu and I didn't have access to everything, but when I received my fish n chips, all the disappointment went away. They were SO GOOD! The breading was light and airy and the fish strips were cooked perfectly and giant. Honestly, the star of the meal though was my husband's beef stew. I am not a huge stew girl so I wasn't excited at all when he ordered it, but after I tried it....I was sold! I liked it so much that when I went back to The Pub with my friend a few weeks later, I ordered it for myself! With mashed potatoes of course. The luck of the Irish! Our crew of 10 snagged a booth at The Pub to watch one of the World Cup games over July 4th weekend. This place was hawt, hawt, hawt. Temperatures were rising and this bar filled up quick. To cool off, we ordered a number of brews for the table, as well as a few shooters from their menu. I adored the lemon drops and would easily order a second or third round. No complaints. To chase it all down, we went to town on their appetizer menu. The table shared poutine, chicken fingers and fries. Nothing about this trip was healthy, but everything tasted so so good. I love a bar filled with locals and this is exactly the vibe The Pub brought to the table. I'd recommend if you're seeking an afternoon of people watching, cheap bears, and greasy bites. read more

Great little pub with a very local feel. We walked in and noticed it felt really cozy and definitely local appreciated. We were told we could sit anywhere and were helped relatively quickly as it was a busy day. They have an amazing happy hour (check the menu) and some great prices for beer and food during that time. We went with the Poutine ($5.50 HH price/$11.00 non HH), which was great. Gravy was flavorful, and the cheddar curds were great. Really good french fries too. Next, we got the small Shepherd's Pie ($13.50). Solid dish made of beef chuck, ground beef, onion, carrots, peas, mashed potatoes, soda bread biscuit. The two dishes together were plenty for two of us to share. There are quite a few beers to choose from as well. I was surprised with the rotating tap list as they had something for everyone. I came later at the end of a long work day, it was the only place that looked like was early enough to catch the kitchen in walking distance of the Best Western. I was a little nervous at first since they were winding down and they weren't sure if the kitchen was still open around 930pm, but luckily they were and I got a large Shepards Pie that was tasty and filling, with soda bread warmed up on the side. An extra strong spicy ale was enough beer for the night, I closed the place as they were winding up around 1030! Nice people and nice environment, but I was the only one there for the last while, sounds like they had a busy day before. read more

I've recommended this restaurant before, but it's such a hidden gem that I had to share again! My father-in-law, with his Scottish roots, loved the Irish-inspired dishes here when he visited San Diego. We started with the pretzel bread--fresh, chewy, and aromatic--and a large beet salad with goat cheese and poppy seed dressing, perfect for sharing. For mains, the corned beef plate and beef stew were hits, especially with the soda bread. The shepherd's pie was delicious but super hot! I had the liver & onions, which was tender and rich, paired perfectly with mashed potatoes. The service was excellent, and we even enjoyed live music on Thursday night. We came to the Pub for Sunday brunch with friends and family visiting from out of town. I used to stop by often when I lived in Bay Park, back when it was still called Dan Diego's, and quickly regretted how long it had been since my last visit. The food, drinks, and service were all top notch. Ryan, the owner, noticed I was looking over the beer list on the wall behind the bar and took the time to answer my questions and share his recommendations. Everything we ordered was delicious, and I highly recommend the chips. We all left very happy with our choice to spend our Sunday morning there and look forward to coming back for live music, World Cup matches, and more great food. Initially when I saw Dan Diego's was being renamed, I was worried there was a change in management/ownership. I'm happy to report that is not the case at all, just some smart rebranding to have a more accurate name to the type of food and atmosphere to expect. Fortunately, the late great Dan is still honored with his jersey in a case, so the history is still there and he is still remembered. Menu is fabulous as always, I am partially keen for their haggis plate, fish and chips, and shepherd's pie. I was recently here for my birthday and everyone loved what they ordered and Patty's bread pudding is to die for (and still my personal favorite in San Diego)! They are doing more fun events at The Pub too, including things like "Paint and Sip" on the patio. It was such a popular evening event they added a brunch one too! Speaking of brunch, my old favorite is back on the menu: the corned beef hash, so I will be going back soon for brunch to have that again in my life. The Pub remains one of my favorite spots in Bay Park and I'm so happy to see it thriving without losing its family business charm. read more

We went to for Father's Day brunch and it was delicious with generous portions. The waiter couldn't have been more accommodating. I ordered the traditional breakfast which was enough for two. We began the meal with the Soda Bread Beignets. Epic and worth returning just on that dish. We enjoyed it all from the black pudding to coffee. The Irish bacon was the only downside ''twas dry" The outdoor seating was very comfortable. The Happy had a very good tasting sausage gravy without being overly peppery. Cute little pub off Morena Blvd. Nice indoor seating including bar as well as outdoor seating and fire pit. Menu has nice variety of traditional Irish dishes as well as more "Americanized" ones (ie burgers, fried chicken). Live Irish music sometimes which is fun. Parking is sparse - although quite a bit of street parking available. And check website to make sure they are open...have arrived a couple times to closed for special event. I ordered the pastrami sandwich - great house made pastrami and very large serving. Fries (chips) were crispy and delicious. Others in my group ordered the fish & chips & said it was incredible. I came here with a Meetp up group that likes to attend HHs, so I try many HH's and Early Bird restaurants through this MeetUp. Usually about 12 people show up. The HH menu was mostly different variations on large cut steak fries. I chose the Canadian Poutine with gravy and fried cheese curds. HH prices are 50% off, appetizers, but the 50% was not on the corned beef topping that I asked for, only the menu item. The 50% off was $8 plus another $4 for corned beef topping. The corned beef was shredded. I took that home to make a ruben sandwich out of the meat. I asked for the fries to be extra crispy, and they came out that way, but not too long after, they become soft and wimpy. After all some of the fries has gravy on them. I don't like this Poutine enough come back and order the same thing, again, though. I took most of it home and toasted the fries in my toaster oven as a side in two more meals. Our server was awesome, very friendly and attentive. I think she is wasted as a restaurant server. She could make so much more money at another job, with her personality. She is an older woman with blond hair. Eating out cost so much now, that I appreciate HH food for half price and I can get enough to eat. read more

Weird! Went last night Saturday for the Irish music. Website stated you needed to RSVP for the music. When we got there I told the host I RSVP'd on the website. He was like "Oh, OK. Seat yourself anywhere" No clue what the point of the RSVP was. We sat waiting forever. Finally someone threw some menus down and said your waiter will be with you in a second. 15 mins and still nothing. We finally noted there was an app to download to get served. It worked the food and drinks were really good! The music was OK. There was no stage and no microphone. No disrespect to the musicians as they played OK, but it just wasn't what you expect going to an Irish pub. It seemed like it was some customers that told the restaurant, "Hey, we can work up some Irish tunes for free food and drink". It's a good place for very good food, no service, bland music, but your toddlers can run around the restaurant safely if that's your jam. read more

Always a pleasure to spend time with good friendly company at the Pub. Be it after a Rugby match or an evening of poetry and pipes for Burns Night (the poet and the piper could not make it though). We can always count on courteous and attentive service from Patty and her staff. Not to mention the great food and spirits. This visit was no different with a treat to an authentic four course Irish dinner. We had a great evening with friends enjoying the patio with heat from tabletop fire. Great place for Irish music - very much like pubs with trad sessions in Ireland where the musicians are at a table (although here they are sometimes outside on a little stage) and welcome other musicians to sit in. The food is great and the ambiance is welcoming, but for me it's all about the music. Jigs and reels and all of the songs you can sing along with. It makes for a great time. read more

My partner and I have been coming here for years now and the food never disappoints. Service and can be spotty here, so make sure to ask your server for what you need up front, because it can be hard to track them down again. However, the food makes up for the service. Some of our favorites here are the fried chicken, garlic fries, and peach cobbler. The garlic fries are super crispy and well seasoned. The peach cobbler is also baked fresh to order in a six inch circular tin, big enough for two people to share. I tried the spinach artichoke dip recently and that was also great- it's very rich and filling. Everything is super fresh here so you should expect a longer wait than most places. While you wait, enjoy the live music as many musicians practice here a couple times a week. read more

Disappointed again. I ordered the almost double priced version of Shepherds pie. I got a shallow 6 inch bowl with almost zero potatoes as the top layer. the base layer of meat and peas was overwhelming with some sort of celery type spice. what makes this worth 23 dollars? read more

I had previously reviews this when it was Dan Diegos. I drive by it regularly and saw the name change to The Pub and kept telling my husband we needed to go to see what if any changes had been made. We came by on a Saturday, in the early evening. We sat on the patio and saw the QR codes to get the menu but when looking at the menu thought that surely there was more? I saw menus at the hostess stand and grabbed a few. Sadly there was just not the selection there once had been. I ended up getting my old standby fish and chips and my husband got the same but with shrimp (shrimp were breaded and fried). Kidlet got chicken nuggets with fries. The nuggets came with ranch (is this a thing people dipping nuggets in ranch?!). I asked for bbq and was given some which my kid proclaimed the "best bbq sauce ever." Come to find out it is her favorite bbq sauce Sweet Baby Ray's. Was disappointed when I looked at the itemized receipt a week later to see we were charged .25 for bbq. It is a quarter but I would have appreciated knowing it was an up charge. Or why couldn't the server have asked "it comes with ranch for dipping is that ok?" I would have said no requested bbq sauce and saved some money and ranch that no one ate. My favorite adult beverage the craic punch was gone (insert sobs here) so I had a rose. Husband had stromalo cider. We used to get the bread pudding with whiskey sauce but after seeing all the changes we decided to leave. Total $61.15 (cider $7.50, fish and chips $18 x 2, kids meal $5, rose $8, bbq .25). While I can't say I will never be back, I can say that it won't be the go to place it had been for us for years and I will have my memories of Dan Diego's and all the family and friends we brought there. read more
