We went to a wedding reception at the Priory Hotel and found ourselves in a beautiful reception space, perfect for a party with eating, drinking and dancing. We grabbed our drinks from the bars that the two ends of the space, then sat for a plated dinner. I got the Filet with roasted potatoes and broccoli, others got chicken and even a "veggie delight" which actually looked pretty good. But most of all, I marveled at the cookie table, a huge spread of cookies of all kinds placed atop models of Pittsburgh bridges. A beautiful sight to behold, and delicious, to boot! Tucked away in Deutschtown you will stumble upon an old priory. One that has been there since 1888. Adjacent to this is the old St. Mary's Church, both building were slated for demolition to make way for an Interstate. But, by the miracle of god, pun intended...maybe, another church filed suit against the state and was saved from the wrecking ball. I think this hotel has spoiled hotel stays for me. This hotel went over the top with everything. From checking in to checking out, they definitely know exactly what they are doing and how to make for a comfortable stay. I booked ahead of time and was able to make it through check in quite easy. Once I was checked in I asked about parking. I knew there was parking included and I thought it was just the lot across the street but was pleasantly surprised that there is another lot right around the corner. My room was located right upstairs from the entrance and check in area. I thought this was boing to be a problem, but these rooms are quite quiet. You really can't hear much noise from anywhere, not even the street. The room was spacious, especially since this was a place of residence at one point. I really enjoyed how the used the space to make it feel like there is a ton more room in the room. The armoire is massive in the room, but in all honesty, it held so much stuff. Obviously a place to put your clothes, but they hid the fridge and just about everything else in there. Some items left for your use, like a robe, and if you were to enjoy them enough you can take them with you. They would just charge your card at the end of the stay. Cable channels are basic. But what really should be watched is the view of the city. My room happened to face Downtown and my windows framed the towers and made them look like pictures. The bathroom, small, but completely useful. Stand up shower, toilet and sink. Beautiful courtyard to take in for a meal or a nightcap. Especially during warmer weather during breakfast time. Nice little fountain out there to sit and just get lost in the day. Speaking of breakfast, complimentary with your stay. They give you a slip to fill out and return to the front desk before 10 p.m. that night. This would be for pick up on your part and you get to make all the selections that you want, select your time for pick up as well and you just show, grab your bag and have your meal. I slept so hard here that I truly felt refreshed in the morning. It was an amazing stay, felt quite cozy, and I would definitely look this place up again and again if I were to come back to Pittsburgh. read more

And the hotel is in walking distance of the Pirates and Steelers stadiums. The only negative is that I could not get the water in the shower to run hot. I stayed at the Priory Hotel in Pittsburgh for three nights/four days for my friend's wedding weekend. She set up a group reservation for guests, so I booked under that over the phone. It was an easy registration process and I received my confirmation over email. I checked in on a Thursday afternoon and checked out Sunday morning. Overall, I had a great time during my stay there. They offered complimentary breakfast, Wi-Fi, and shuttle service. The woman working the front desk was friendly and a local, so she offered advice and directions about the immediate area and Pittsburgh in general. The Priory Hotel was a former abbey. It was converted into a hotel/inn but still has all the architectural flourishes of a community home for monks and nuns (the hotel bar is named "Monk's Bar"). There's a gym room in the basement (G level); the business center (computer and printer you can use) and conference room is on the G level also. I thought the gym was well equipped, and there was a water dispenser and TV down there also. I had a standard sized room, which was a comfortable size for two people. We had a flat screen TV, coffee maker, and a decent amount of clothing storage (dresser and wardrobe). Our window had a view of Pressley Street. I was within walking distance of a pharmacy, supermarket, and some restaurants and a bar. I walked to Allegheny Commons Park in the mornings. I would stay at the Priory again during future visits to Pittsburgh. read more

This corner of Pittsburgh is like no other. You need to visit. An area slotted to be destroyed in the 1970's, this tough monastery has managed to withstand urban blight and gentrification to be standing in a manner not too different than it was in the early 1900's. I'm not sure if I agree with managements definition of this being a 'European Style' hotel. Hell no. This is a Pittsburgh style hotel, literally built on immigrant labor nestled in Deutschtown that refused to be paved over when the highway wanted to pass through. Ok! The details -the staff is more than friendly! they own the place. It's a cooperative. Everyone is nice and invested. They treat you like a guest. Amenities at the desk and a friendly person greets you every time you stop by. Thanks -good parking when the Steelers aren't playing at home:) -you got to love this neighborhood. It's the real deal. A genuine diversity of people and a grocery store down the street. -michael the bartender is a historian. Have him tell you something specific(ask him about the vault..)He calls himself a storyteller, but it doesn't seem to be adequate to sum up his knowledge. -the rooms are unique and spacious -I love the area. The Northside is so rich with museums, architecture and people. To be honest, the hipsters aren't making it to this part of Pittsburgh yet. And they will... Take advantage of this hidden gem. Enjoyed our stay here after a wedding! I would not feel comfortable roaming around outside alone (I'd say the location is a bit on the sketchy side) - but the hotel itself is absolutely beautiful! Our room was beautifully renovated and updated. The bathroom in our room was absurdly small though. There was about 2mm of clearance between the door opening and the toilet - you had to step over the toilet into the shower to be able to get inside and shut the bathroom door. I would be concerned to stay in this room for that reason if I were elderly or a larger person! Toiletries provided were nice. Towels were fluffy and clean. I liked being able to pick your breakfast the day before and have it ready for you to pickup at your desired time. I would definitely stay here again - especially if attending a wedding at the venue! read more

Much of the original fabric of the 1888 rectory, including pressed-tin ceilings and ornamental fireplaces in the cozy yet spacious rooms, is intact. The beautifully drawn and very informative original floor plan by architect Henry Möser hangs in a first-floor hallway. The Priory offers a friendly boutique experience and is an excellent alternative to large, chain hotels downtown. The compact bar offers a small selection of food at night. Located north of the Allegheny River walking distance from the Andy Warhol Museum, the hotel offers complimentary parking and is easily accessible by bus. My wife and I went to a wedding in Pittsburgh this weekend. We stayed at the Priory because it was right next to the function hall which is a part of the hotel. We were able to get checked in very quickly and to our room to relax for a bit after a long day of traveling. The rooms are extremely clean, I cannot get over how impressed I was when I walked into the room. If you're looking for a unique experience with a hotel, visit the Priory, their prices are a little steep, but worth every penny. We will definitely be back there. read more

Recently hosted a small event at The Priory and overall pretty disappointed in the level of service. For example, water was not refreshed during the event at the tables and we had to ask to have food refreshed at the buffet when it ran very low. The mimosas were self-serve, which seemed a little odd, every event I have been to with mimosas they were passed or served. We were not offered coffee with the cake, that was also self-serve and we had to ask for the cake to be offered as well. I will say that the food was excellent, a shining spot with the dissapointing service. read more

We stayed here for a wedding that was also on site, the whole experience was a bit of a calamity of errors. First, there was no parking, so we go to the valet, but apparently the valet is just for events, so he doesn't want to take our car, but there is literally no other parking and the EQT 10 Miler was the next day so we couldn't park on the street. So he ends up taking the car (more on this later). We check in and there were 2 people at the desk. They were both amazing. no complaints there at all, however, they had downgraded our room to a smaller bed because they oversold and since we checked in latest we got the short end of the stick. 1. they shouldn't have oversold, and 2. don't you think you would give the rooms to the people that booked them earlier not the people that checked in first? Our family booked last minute and arrived 20 minutes before us and were given the larger room, which makes me think the rooms are really first come first served. They did give us drink vouchers to make up for this, but we were there for 1 night for a wedding that already had free drinks, so this wasn't especially helpful or valuable to us. The majority of this place seems to be in disrepair or being repaired or something, but overall its not as nice or finished as you would expect for the price. Everything is old and seems just not finished. Like the rugs are just cut off at the end and not under those metal ending things and there's molding missing from the bottom of the walls. It's just not nice. Then we go up to our room. I sit on the bed and the whole freaking thing slams to the ground. I mean, I like food, but not in a way that I commonly expect to break a bed by sitting on it, especially a sturdy hotel bed. So, I go back downstairs to tell them about the bed and then we go to the wedding. I will review the wedding separately. When we got back, the bed was fixed with a piece of wood holding it up. It worked alright for the night, but I feel bad for the next person to sleep there. Then, we go to check out and they have no idea where our car keys are....LOL. Eventually, they found them, but we were pretty nervous there for a minute. People working here were really friendly, but this place needs to get its stuff together. read more

We booked The Priory with a last minute opening for the Pittsburgh Taylor Swift concert. We stayed two nights, and our expectations were blown out of the water across our entire experience. Customer Service throughout outstanding. Logan in particular at the front desk was fantastic, however the entire staff were pleasant and helpful. They were thoughtful and go above and beyond to welcome their guests. We thought their "Swiftie Welcome Station" and free shuttle offered to and from the concert for all guests attending were evidence of this extra time and care they put towards the needs of each and every of their visitors. Accommodations were also very pretty. We were impressed by the quality and condition of the rooms, as well as moved by its unique charm and aesthetics. Parking was easy, and the hotel is close to downtown and walkable to the baseball and football stadiums. While we were initially unsure of the immediate surrounding area, upon arriving we felt comfortable and even decided to walk home from our concert. Overall- a must recommend and truly hidden gem in Pittsburgh!! read more

The Priory is a boutique hotel located in the Northshore area of Pittsburgh in what once was called the Northside. Apparently, someone decided Northshore sounds trendier and a name change was in order. The Priory is a former Catholic rectory and reflects the brick construction common in the area. It offers two fenced parking lots with free parking immediately adjacent to the hotel. The employees are friendly and helpful. I wish I could add more compliments but unfortunately, I can't! It offers free shuttle service however, due to a shortage of employees this service is not always available and there is no way to determine when you may be left to your own devices. The Priory is popular for wedding receptions and if you are unlucky enough to be staying there when one takes place don't expect to get any peace and quiet after a long day of traveling. Since the hotel is basically a converted home, space and soundproofing are sacrificed for ambience. In short, it's very noisy! There is no bell or valet service, so you are on your own in regard to carrying luggage and belongings. Our room was tiny by any standard and not comfortable or inviting. It was dark and definitely not attractive. There were multiple table lamps and one floor lamp in the room, but all had dark brown shades which pretty much eliminated any light coming from them. There is a lack of outlets in the room to accommodate today's gadgets and toys. The bathroom was dated, and the toilet seat kept falling off the toilet. There is no restaurant in the hotel and only a few nearby but barely in walking distance and neither is worth the walk. The safe in the room did not work and this is not an area you want to leave any valuables unsecured in your room. On one occasion while going to our car an individual was standing in the street yelling "give me a knife" repeatedly! Very interesting. A grocery store one block away had a police officer standing guard at the entrance, not a good sign! I couldn't help but think I had made a mistake and ended up in New York City. There is one ice machine for the guests, and it is located in the basement. If you enjoy staying in boutique hotels you might want to consider The Priory but if you are looking for a hotel which offers amenities and services, I suggest you go elsewhere. read more

Ok for all of the reviews that said people were rude I didn't see it. Everyone I encountered were super friendly and helpful. The place is quite and cozy and tucked away but very convenient to the city. We didn't use it but the shuttle service they provide sounded awesome but we chose to walk. Our room was super clean, how do I know? I used a black light on it and found nothing. LOL. The mattress was a little on the hard side but other than that the room was quite and comfortable. You also have complete control over the thermostat which some hotel don't allow and seeing how I like it arctic cold when I sleep this was nice. The morning continental breakfast was good and fresh with plenty of selections to choose from. Micheal our host when we checked in was very informative and courteous. When asked for local restaurants to eat in several were suggested but because we were in Dutchtown we chose the German place three blocks away. It is a must try see my review on Max's allegheny tavern. Next time we are in Pittsburgh this is the hotel we will chose. read more

Let me start by saying I am a road warrior! This hotel was booked by my company travel agent. She did this in an effort to save cost and when I first looked up the hotel I was horrified! Upon walking in I was greeted enthusiasm. Explain all about every amenity at the hotel. Went to a very impressive albeit somewhat small room that reminded me of my grandparents house. The carpet was ultra soft and the closet was huge. I had partaken in a few libations at monks bar, which is literally the smallest bar in Pennsylvania. My only two minor complaints were the Wi-Fi was marginal at best and my shower had some mold. This was not the type of mold that you had in your bathroom at college. This was minor grout mold. I appreciated seeing at the hotel uses real tile and not an insert like most chain hotels. Will I be back? Absolutely, and I suggest you stay here as well. This was an awesome find. read more

for those that don't know, the priory was once a church. a big church with many buildings, & a courtyard in the middle. it is so beautiful there, anywhere you go. the "sanctuary" is now the grand hall. all the paintings, the gold gild, it's all still there along with beautiful windows & woodwork. the courtyard has a fountain that babbles along. they have a chef, a bar, & even a couple nearby homes for rent to brides & grooms & their famlies to stay close by. besides weddings, they do other events. from spring to fall, the have wine dinners. they are to die for! we went to the last one of the season recently. (try back in the spring!) it was the wines of the pacific northwest. we arrived to a mimosa, & fruit & cheese. a very nice spread. more than we could eat at our table! once everyone else arrived, the dinner began! the 1st course was shrimp romano on a caesar salad, paired with rascal, a pinot gris. i love a good caesar salad, & this was 1 of the them! the wine was crisp, perfect match. 2nd course was butternut squash ravioli with smoked chicken in a brown butter sage sauce with a duck pond cellars pinot noir. the chicken was so tender. a nice wine, more body than we expected. 3rd course, braised short rib ragu in a ring of duchess potatoes with a rasa vineyard's "occam's razor" red blend. the meat just melted in your mouth! that wine, well, we won a free bottle later, & i nabbed that puppy before someone else took it! it is delicious! finally, dessert! a warm apple & pineapple crisp with vanilla bean ice cream, served with hyatt vineyard's reisling. the reisling was a nice fit to the crisp. i must say, they are also very generous with the wine, just ask for more! we also had wonderful table mates! sometimes you get a not so nice group or couple. but hey to nancy & laila! we had so much fun! really, where can you get all of this for a mere $75/person! great night! can't wait til next year! read more

Our friends gave us a gift card from bedandbreakfast.com so we chose to use it at The Priory on Friday night for our weekend in Pittsburgh. They had a spring special on there website that wasn't listed on the bedandbreakfast site so I wasn't sure if it was option but I called and they were more than happy to book the room for the special rate. The outside and the inside both had a lot of old world charm an our room was beautiful. We explored some and found a cute outdoor patio and the front of the hotel had a small bar called Monks. After dinner we hit Monks is for a drink and the bartender gave us some recommendations for what to see while we were there when he found out we were out of town. The next morning a breakfast of meats, cheese, and pasteries were served and it was delicious. We both truly enjoyed our stay and if we ever visit Pittsburgh again, I can see us staying here. read more

I booked a room from Sunday, April 2nd, through Wednesday, April 5th, 2023, in the Priory Hotel, 614 Pressley Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15212, because it is the hotel closest to Allegheny General Hospital, where I was scheduled to have back surgery. The Priory was originally built as a monastery in 1888. It must have been designed as punishment for bad monks because of the austere conditions in each of its original 24 rooms. My room 305, had no bureau in which to place my clothes during my 3-night stay. So, I had to live out of my suitcase which I kept open on a chair. Also, there was no refrigerator or microwave in the room. I thought that, after the monastery was converted to a hotel in 1995, such amenities would have been added. Lastly, there walls no counter space on which to place toiletries, so I placed them on the toilet tank top. As far I know, monks did not have toiletries, but the converters should have thought about the need for some space. In conclusion, I do not recommend this hotel to anyone other than a monk. read more

We had an unplanned overnight in Pittsburgh. We asked a receptionist where to stay. She said The Priory. THANK YOU, RONDA! This "hole-in-the-wall" historic hotel provided an amazing experience. We saw three rooms; all are beautifully unique. This hotel is without a doubt the CLEANEST hotel I have ever stayed. The complimentary "bag breakfast" was extraordinary. (I usually offer my husband half of my sandwich; after the first bite of The Priory ham and cheese croissant... let's just say he didn't get any of it). The staff was exceptional. Property Director Giuseppe was my superhero. When we registered, he noticed I was ill. When I said I had a migraine, he asked the desk to change our room. While my husband continued to check in, Giuseppe walked with me to the new room. He explained this room was farthest away from other guests so it should be quieter for me. He even offered me a cup of tea. I have never experienced this level of customer care. I HIGHLY recommend. read more

I'd actually like to give 3.5 stars, but that's not an option. My stay at the Priory was OK. My flight into Pittsburgh was early and I arrived at the hotel at 11:30 hoping for an early check-in. I was told possibly by 1pm, so I went to eat lunch (they kindly kept my bag for me), and came back around 1:30 and ended up getting a room a little after 2. My room was nice enough, the bed was soft and had a lot of pillows. Unfortunately the heater was not working. I asked the front desk and they said they were switching to the boiler (it was the first cold day of the year) and to turn my system off and turn it back on later when everything should be working. I did so and later that evening it was still 64 degrees in my room and wasn't getting any warmer. I went downstairs again and they said they called someone to come take a look at it. Meanwhile I left and came back from a late dinner and my room was down to 62. I pulled the blanket out of the closet. I wasn't about to take a shower in a freezing room so I can't give a review of the shower facilities. Anyway, I stayed up until after 11 and finally the heat started working, just in time for bed. Breakfast the next morning was pretty good. Their decaf coffee was fresh and actually hot. The breakfast room had tablecloths and linen napkins and actual plates and silverware. Definitely a couple steps up from your normal hotel breakfast. I wish they would have had some english muffins though, as the bread was a super-cheap loaf that turns rock hard when you toast it. The staff was friendly and the parking lot was close, but tiny. I was lucky the times that I came back I was able to snag the one available space, otherwise I would have had to park in their secondary lot, which is gated. There is a gas station nearby that I stopped at, but I probably would not walk to from the hotel. The wi-fi was horrible, and I kept switching between the various guest networks trying to find one with a reliable connection. I ended up giving up at one point and using my phone as a hotspot. My room was on the 3rd floor so maybe I was just too far from the access points? Anyway, I had an alright stay but was disappointed in the heating issue and the wi-fi and wouldn't stay here again because of those two issues. Everything else was fine, the staff was especially nice, so if the price is right for you, you might have no problem with staying here. read more

One thing Pittsburgh is not known for, but should be, is turning old churches into businesses, homes and even bars (gasp!). Most of the churches are so beautiful that it's such a great use of space. This is no exception, as it's just so unique inside! If you're looking for that nontraditional hotel that's NOT a Marriott or Hilton, this is the place you'll want to stay! It's fashioned like a European boutique hotel, plus all the amenities you'd be looking for like WiFi, a shuttle and continental breakfast (score!). It's also a really lovely place to have an event. For smaller events you can rent out specific parlor's for a reasonable cost and you're able to bring in your own caterers. I really like this option because you're not boxed into one choice that may be out of price range. If I would have gotten married in Pittsburgh, this would definitely have been my first choice for the reception. The Grand Hall is just gorgeous! It has the original church organ and stain glass windows. When it's all dressed up for the event it's just a stunning place for a magical affair! The Northside of town, where it's located, has walkable access to the Andy Warhol Museum, The Mattress Factory Museum, The Children's Museum, The National Aviary, The Carnegie Science Center, PNC Park (home to the Pirates, go bucks!) and Heinz Field (home to the Stillerz, as we call them in the burgh). Some are farther than others, but there's always the shuttle if it's in our frigid winter season. In the summer, go for the walk so you can take in the sights! There's also a lot of cute restaurants and bars on East Ohio River Boulevard, which is two streets up from the hotel. My suggestions would be Bistro to Go and Bistro Soul, Rita's Italian Ice (personal fave) or The Priory Bakery for dessert! There's also Legends North Shore not far on E. North Ave. about two streets up from E. Ohio and Amani Coffee Shop and Cafe for a quick stop for coffee or a great panini for lunch. It's really a fantastic time to go in the summer because EVERYTHING is within walking distance. Plus they have a great farmers market in the park right along E. Ohio and they have kayaking in the park right by the Aviary. The big kayaking organization, Venture Outdoors is right under the 6th St. Bridge next to PNC Park. You're able to kayak around the three rivers for only $15 an hour! It's a great way to see the city! This is your place for one unique stay, I wouldn't steer you wrong! read more

Even though The Priory is flanked by some questionable areas, my stay was more than adequate. With friendly staff, low key digs and a pretty tasty breakfast buffet, I'd certainly stay there again. Each room is unique, but during my stay, I resided in a king room, #303 and found the following: -Comfy bed with plenty of pillows -Lack of outlets! The only reachable outlet in the open was in the bathroom. All other outlets were buried under desks, behind nightstands/the bed or inaccessible. -A mini fridge, robe and handful of hangers -Nice, moderately sized LG flatscreen with a myriad of channels -Small but clean workout room with a treadmill, elliptical machine, bike, small selection of free weights and a few weight machines -Free WiFi -Teeny-tiny shower in which I practically had to contort myself to shave my legs (and I'm just shy of 5'2") -Comfortable desk with an under desk surge protector/strip of outlets The Prioriy is super unique but still feels very quiet and church like...in a good way! read more

I've attended two weddings here. Both have been amazing. The facility is really nice. The bathrooms are nice. Where this place shines is the food. The food I've had at the weddings has been amazing. The steaks are well prepared, the chicken is awesome, and the mushroom entry for vegetarians is amazing. Both wedding cakes (vanilla and red velvet) have also been awesome. We stayed here and was initially disappointed-- being new to town, our first impression was that Pittsburgh was a very very bad town full of homeless and degenerates (the area, I find out later, is one of the worst spots in the city!). The hotel is located across the street from a housing authority building. Projects? UGH. Great. Then we were put into a "historical" room that was similar to that of a rundown cheap apartment-- old shower stall, moldy threadbare carpeting, lumpy squeaky bed. I find out an hour later (after freaking out about the lo-end aspect of this room) that they have new rooms that were just recently renovated. I asked to see the room, and then ultimately change to that room-- for a fee, of course. About 50% more expensive. But I pay more because NO WAY would I be able to exist in this old "historical" creepy room. Finally, a regular room-- the "renovated" room was similar to that of an acceptable hotel room. Why even keep this historical, old, dingy, dirty room? Do they figure unsuspecting people who don't know any better will just accept it b/c they have no other choice?? I slept well in the "new" renovated room, and would have been freaked out all night in the old room. What a difference. Actually, the bed and linens were very, very comfortable. The bathroom was nice and clean. The room was what I expected a hotel room to be... not high end four seasons, but not cheap and nasty either. The hotel obviously had availabilities of the new, renovated rooms, so why put us in an old, unrenovated, ugly old apartment looking room? If they believed in upgrading, then they would have at least gotten repeat business!! For those who are going to book here, pay more for the new rooms, or go somewhere else. The option of staying in the old room should not be an option at all. I don't think I will ever go back here if I ever go back to Pittsburgh. I will stay at a chain hotel-- marriot or whatever. What is money except a means to be comfortable and live? I will spend more next time. Breakfast was "eh". It was free-- small stations of some fruit, cheese, small pastries, cereal, yougurt and two hot items: sausage + bacon. OJ, Cranberry, Milk and Coffee also available. Very surprised at all of the positive reviews. I agree that the staff is very nice, but that is the only positive part of the stay. The rooms are old and dingy. The bed frame is too large for the mattress, so we kept banging our knees on it. The rooms are poorly/oddly lit. Bad ramp access means you have to carry your bags up stairs or use an antiquated lift. No food anywhere near the hotel very uncomfortable and the tub didn't drain. Far better choices at this price range. read more
