Mini fridge, microwave, Keurig that needed cleaning
Alex T.

Overall room was nice. My door lock jammed once. Bathroom sink hot water handle not secured well to the counter top same in shower. Neither didn't allow washing up but gave appearance that needed updating. Glad to have refrig, microwave and coffeemaker. However coffee maker was in need of cleaning. Kind of gross. Got stuck in the elevator. Hit call button and engineer got me out pretty quickly. Seemed like no one was surprised that lead me to believe this happens occasionally. Went to bar at night for a cocktail. One bartender who also was serving all the tables. She was very nice but I felt sorry for her cause the restaurant must be short staffed. Valet service was pretty responsive. Overall nothing horrible but seems like some things need addressing

A decent hotel in the area - but I prefer the Marriott across the street. The Oaklander by Cathy is even nicer (but of course is more stars than these hotels, so not a fair comparison to make). Breakfast is included at the Marriott hotel, it is not included at this one. It's $15 for the "buffet" - but they really don't have much to eat, just some bagels, yogurt, potatoes, fruit... Wish they had an omelette bar or a menu you could order off of instead for breakfast items as opposed to the standard hotel breakfasts. That said, the breakfast was decent I guess - it filled me up and that's all that really mattered - was just here for a quick work trip. The gym in this hotel has no windows and not that much equipment/very old equipment. The elevator also was super finnicky and you had to press the buttons multiple times in order to get it to move - super annoying. The heat/ac in the rooms were really loud too which was annoying and they didn't have any room slippers. When I called and asked for shower caps, I had to go down to get them - usually they bring them up to you. I have Hilton silver status through my AmEx card - but when I got to the hotel they claimed that I don't have status - and thus refused to give me the free water bottles. Very strange... The one nice thing, despite all these annoyances, is that when I asked to be moved to another room (my original room STANK of smoke!!), EJ moved me into a suite (an accessible room).

Cute hotel near UPMC. I stayed recently for a quick work trip, and I have no complaints. Rate was about $150/night. The hotel has a gym, bar, and restaurant. There are also meeting rooms for small conferences. I enjoyed lunch at the restaurant which had delicious fall salads and roasted salmon. The bar also has full service late into the evening where a few guests hung out. I enjoyed a glass of wine $11. The room itself was clean with your standard amenities. Nothing fancy but the bed was comfortable. I have to say hands down the staff were amazing. Every corner I turned someone was checking on my comfort or needs. Halloween everyone dressed up and made it very festive.

Bed bug

BED BUGS! Don't stay here! We made our 5 day reservation about a month in advance, my sister was having a brain tumor removed at upmc 3 blocks away and we needed to be close. I found a bug in the bed the following afternoon and captured it in a water bottle. They did change our room and called out their entomologist to come look at what I caught. He confirmed it was a bedbug and even found a couple more in the bed. They did treat that room, comped us our stay, had our laundry dry cleaned, bought us a dinner, and sent us a nice gift basket. However we were never compensated for our suitcases that had to be thrown out. In all our years of traveling, I've never seen bugs anywhere! The stress, trauma, and sleepless nights aren't worth staying here!!!!

The best thing about this hotel, compared to others in the area, is it's location right next to UPitt's campus where my daughter goes. Other than location, it really can't compare with the Hyatt Southside, which feels newer, sleeker, fresher, and has a river view plus free breakfast and cheaper parking: $18 instead of $20. The bed was comfortable and what you would expect from a Hilton Garden Inn or comparable. In our room (511) we had some minor upkeep issues- broken closet door and broken towel bar. Another issue that also was somewhat inconvenient was the more-than-arms-length distance between the toilet and the tp holder - not a good design, and hopefully all the bathrooms weren't this poorly laid out! It was easily fixed by taking the toilet paper roll off the holder and placing it on the tank... But still. I would stay here again if I got a great rate.

Great view of Marathon across street

How does this place maintain standards to be called a Hilton? To begin with, you Must valet park, an additional $18/n fee. Plus, you are warned it will take 20 lead time to retrieve the vehicle. Crap, now with every other thing on my mind, I need to remember this!? Then you enter the lobby, which appears to have been designed by Salvador Dali. Do you go upstairs? Downstairs to check in? Incredibly you learn either could work, depending on how you want to drag your baggage. How anyone thought this obstacle course would be appreciated is beyond comprehension, but whoever it was left glass windows looking out on the beautiful Marathon Gas Station. Nice. Room was ok, but below the Garden Inn standards. The only reason an extra star was earned was the service from the front desk and Food & Beverage Dept. Also next morning I called to get my car. I was told to call the number on my claim ticket. Tried: No Joy; so I called back the front desk and told them what I wanted to happen, and they made it so!

I stayed here one night because I thought the trendy Bloomfield neighborhood would provide a nice change-of-pace from the more established downtown area. I was also planning to drive to upstate New York and thought this would be a convenient location for a faster getaway. Well, a sudden winter snowstorm forced me to cancel the side trip to New York, and I ended up spending very little time exploring Bloomfield because I took a long nap in my room after a sleepless night in the previous hotel. Even though it was bordering on pointless to shift to this hotel, I still enjoyed the studio I reserved for $152. There was a comfortable king bed, a fully equipped kitchen, a corner sofa, and a 360-degree swivel flatscreen TV. It was a lot of amenities I didn't need, but hey, it was freezing cold, so the apartment set-up made it feel cozy. One other advantage was a sizable lot to park my rental SUV. Even though they offered a happy hour and continental breakfast, I skipped both. Instead I braved the cold and just strolled on Baum to find a decent greasy spoon for dinner and a quiet gay bar for a drink. Not a bad stay, and I'd consider a return to explore Bloomfield. The lobby area was really pretty and so much larger than it appears from outside. Free breakfast! The pool was nice and heated. We had it to ourselves both times we went in it during our stay. The hotel is located is a great area. Cons: It seems like the furniture was poor quality. Multiple times during the stay there was a panel that kept falling off the table in the kitchen area. The parking is pricey. I absolutely hate paying for parking. I wish this came with the hotel stay as it was also already priced on the higher end. Overall, I would definitely stay here again. I would probably pick a day that didn't fall on a holiday weekend for a less expensive stay.

Here's our experience. 1) Check-In: One unique aspect of this hotel is that the check-in is on the top floor with a beautiful view of Pittsburgh. Take the elevator to the 10th floor and two check in stands are right when the elevator doors open. The entire check-in experience took about five minutes. The woman helping us was efficient, personable, and even gave us a walking map of the area. She also gave us two drink vouchers to use on house beer, wine, or a mocktail at the hotel bar. 2) Rooms: Our larger room was on the 4th floor with two queen sized beds. The room corridor was wide, making it look much larger. There are plenty of outlets everywhere, lights, a TV, a Keurig machine, a fridge, and more. The bathroom was spacious with a toilet room with a closing door inside, a large shower, and Le Labo shampoo, conditioner, and soap. The beds are semi comfy and come with lots of pillows. 3) Amenities: There's no pool, but there is a gym with machines and weights. There's also a small rooftop terrace with a view of the Cathedral of Learning, work areas, and more. There's valet parking and a cheaper parking garage not connected to the hotel across the street. One interesting aspect of the hotel is that it's on the site of the Syrian Mosque, a large music venue. A recording studio, guitar, etc. inside the hotel are all nods to the music venue. 4) Service: The staff were very friendly and helpful. After a day of exploring, our room had a nice card with chocolate, macarons, and raspberries, and nice water for us. My wife forgot her toothbrush and the front desk gave her a free one from behind the desk! 5) Neighborhood: It's next to a number of museums and monuments and the Cathedral of Learning, which is worth a tour to see their Nationality Rooms.

Everything from the sandwiches to the scones to the sweets were tasty. They weren't the fanciest I've experienced at afternoon tea but they were good! What they have here is afternoon tea and I wish they would advertise it as such. I was immediately blown away with the foyer! At check in, there is fruit infused water to quench your thirst. Make sure you keep your room key in hand because you will need it to operate the elevator (once in, hold it against the black box until light turns green and quickly select your floor). The hallways were incredible! And still had their old charm! I even picked up the old fashioned telephone and it rings the front desk! You can use it shall you need something ... if for some reason you cannot enter your room, just pick up the black phone in the hallway and they will come to you (this didn't happen to me, but just a tip if it does). I stayed in room 1470 and absolutely love my view of the gothic architecture of the Union Trust. I looked out my window a million times! The size of my room was huge! I could have done cartwheels all over the place! The WiFi is complimentary for guests. There's cable TV. Maybe other options too but I didn't have my tv on much to know. The water pressure deserves its own special shout out! Holy moly it was heaven! And the brand of washes they had was nice! Usually the conditioner isn't good enough in hotels for my hair but this was just fine! And there's a good blow dryer on the back of the door (I still used my own because I have a lot of hair and it's long BUT had I forgotten it, their hair dryer would have been just fine at 1875 watts. There's a tag on your door that you can hang if you'd like to skip housekeeping for a day and the hotel will donate a meal for doing so .. check out the tag for more info! There's also cards you can put on your bed if you want your bedding changed. I was never bothered in my room by housekeeping. I was never bothered by noise. I never experienced a phony phantom call to my room. (All things I've experienced at other places). You will get a free drink at checkout you can get a beer at the tap room or a coffee at Mellon Square (on site). It is not good for the speakeasy ... and yes, it's a real speakeasy that existed in the 1920s you could access thru tunnels under the city! So cool! On checkout day, the event I attended was going to start early and finish after checkout time. Since I was up late the night before, the front desk said I was welcome to bring my bags down now for bellhop to hold, but they also put me for a late checkout at 1pm so I could come down late the next day too. So partway thru the event just before 1pm I brought down my bags and they held them for the next 90 mins I was there. I parked across the street at the Mellon square parking garage ... Apple GPS marks the garage in the wrong place FYI ... it marks it about a block away but it is directly across the street from the hotel, with the entrance to it being on the cross street. I paid $44 to park there from Thursday around 5pm to Sunday around 3pm. Not bad. They do have valet parking at the hotel too but that is $55 per day I believe. Leaving was sad. I would have liked more time to enjoy this place. I would love to come back sometime! I have nothing bad to say about this place. Wonderful staff and incredible hotel! Thank you for this amazing stay!
