The bartender, who also happened to be one of the owners, welcomed us warmly and shared the history behind the cidery. This week the chef had a woodfired pizza oven. Keep in mind, cider is the focus here. So, my husband's old fashioned was made with cider. Hearing this, I asked for my cider on the side rather than in my cosmo. We learned that the owner's background is movie set design and that she worked on movies like Harry Potter, so the decor was a combination of old industrial plant and haunted house. The bar had "potions" with smoke oozing out. There were also skeletons and skulls throughout the restaurant along with spooky photos that changed from normal to scary. She even allowed us to explore the different back rooms one of which she called the "swamp room." The pizza was good, and we enjoyed listening to the live music which wasn't overwhelmingly loud. I really liked the décor and overall vibe, both inside and outside. It's a great setting and well worth seeking out. A friend and I spent an afternoon checking out a few local distilleries and breweries, and Big Spring Spirits really stood out. We did a spirits flight, and while everything was well done, the straight rye whiskey was easily my favorite. It was surprisingly busy for a weekday afternoon, but the staff never missed a beat. Everyone was moving, clearly enjoying what they do, and they were happy to answer questions and talk through the spirits without making it feel rushed. I ended up buying a bottle of the rye to bring back home to California. I also just found out they've opened a tasting room in State College, which means it's officially on my list for the next time I'm back in PA.

Our visit was great as usual! The service and employees are friendly and professional, making sure our drinks are topped off all evening. The large selection of beer has something for everyone from dark stoudts to juicy IPAs. They also have a great selection of cocktails for the non-beer drinkers.  The menu offered a variety to choose from and still reflects Shy Bear's commitment to serving  quality cuisine. The three things I look for in a brewery are an inviting outdoor space, accessibility to some good grub, and (of course) some quality beers. Big bonus if a place is dog friendly. Shy Bear easily accomplishes all three and earns a double bonus for welcoming our Doodle. The staff was great - they were packed but our hostess and waitress both made sure we were taken care of without being up-in-your-face. They understood both the food and beer menus and were able to make good suggestions. The overall atmosphere of the place was fun too - trivia night was going on while we were there and even the people who weren't playing along were obviously engaged. We had lunch not too much earlier, but we couldn't pass up trying one of the flatbreads that the waitress recommended. We were very happy that we did - just the right size and very tasty. We each got a flight of five so we got to sample a good chunk of their offerings. They had some unique variations like a cookies n cream sour and they also had some truer to original styles that I prefer - and I walked out with a four pack of their West Coast IPA to prove it.
