I bought a groupon for a session here with my girlfriend and we had a great experience. Paul the owner / operator is a great teacher. He has a great sense of humor and put everyone at ease with a focus on learning rather than a focus on any pieces we were making. During the session a couple of his full time students dropped in to pick up some of their pieces and you could tell there was a mutual respect and kindness between Paul and these artists. This was a new experience for us, and Paul made the learning easy, stress free, and best of all, he made it fun.

I really wanted to like this place. I always wanted to try pottery, so when my friend bought me a Groupon deal, I was very excited. However, I wasn't so thrilled with the experience, mostly because of the instructor/owner Paul. The class that was supposed to start at 1:30 started at 2pm because for 30min Paul was talking about his trip to England and how he didn't like things there. People were looking at each other because nobody could understand what it has to do with pottery, some even started yawning, but he didn't get a message. Finally, at 2 pm he split us into 2 groups (there were pottery wheels only for half of the group) and half of us were doing plates (basically, pressing the clay into samples) and another half was using the wheels. Then we switched. To my surprise, at 3:10 Paul said that we have to stop what we are doing and clean. Basically, what was supposed to be a 2hr class turned into 1hr 10min one. Don't get me wrong, it was a good experience and I will certainly try pottery again, but we felt rushed and the instruction was minimal. Maybe it was because the class was sold on Groupon, but I still think it could've been organized much better.

Came here with groupon. It was a fantastic intro workshop. The groupon plus tax ended up being about $40. We got to work on the wheel and also made a platter. We worked with the whitish clay not the reddish/brown clay. I think it was quite tricky. I destroyed my first piece on the wheel. There wasn't much time to really play with the wheel because as a beginner you will likely destroy it if you have too much fun and not take home anything. I will showcase my work after 6 weeks when it's glazed. Paul was fantastic. Very informative and experienced. I have seen other groupons where the workshop is more expensive probably about $60 per person plus the fine print says you pay extra fee to get your work glazed. So this groupon was just a terrific deal.

I purchased a Groupon for my Mom as a christmas gift as she loves ceramics classes and had never tried using a wheel.

I mean I build things, with metal and iron and wood in my spare time, how could I ever do something as detailed and delicate as sewing fabrics together? I had visions of what my contraptions might be, oddly shaped indistinguishable fabric pieces held loosely together with thread and a prayer. As a self proclaimed perfectionist, this venture into the unknown scared the bejesus out of me. All this self doubt and fear went away the moment I entered into The Sewing Junction this past Sunday morning and met with shop owner and instructor Clara whose gentle approach and kind smile put my fears to rest immediately. We were there for her special holiday workshop where the project of the day would be to design our very own custom Christmas Stocking! I was excited about this workshop since the only stocking I've ever had is a 4 foot long one complete with Teddy Bear head atop it that I've had since I was 5. Say what you want about a nearly 30 year old guy rocking a teddy bear stocking but that thing holds a TON of presents. But we all need to grow up at some point, so I was thrilled to make a proper (and properly sized) new stocking. The workshop was amazing, start to finish. Clara's lesson plan was meticulously planned out, providing enough time for sufficient explanation, demonstration and skill practice before each step of the process to ensure we knew what we were doing before working on our project. All supplies and tool usage were included in the class fee, and for the stocking we were allowed to choose between three fabric options (I went with a wonderful brown chocolate suede). Overall, my experience was exceptional, my stocking looks professionally made from a specialty shop, and is better quality than anything you'll find in a store. Best of all, I've discovered that I really enjoy sewing. Thanks to Clara for a wonderful afternoon and I'm looking forward to taking another class in the future!

The space is also very clean and organized. Each class has specific skills which are taught, and so I never felt like I was running around not knowing what was happening. I also really appreciated the condition of the machines there. I also really appreciate that the classes were not over crowded. After finishing my first course, I have a decent amount of confidence in my abilities, and am excited about what is next!

I prepaid and booked our session. The facilities are located in the Wychwood art building on the second floor. We arrived early, and the studio was clear, so we were able to begin early. It was a little smaller than I expected, but certainly has everything required. Our staff was super friendly, and reassured us we'd be able to complete our projects. She went through the various pieces we could choose from to make. Both of us went for a solid bird, and blown lamp. We started with the bird. For the bird, we could choose up to 3 colours. She explained what each would look like once applied. She demonstrated what we would be doing, and had us try some practice with the rod. She pulled the molten glass from the furnace, and handed it over to us to roll into the frit colours we selected. She watched as we put the glass in to make sure we applied the right amount of pressure and rolled it before it cooled too much. The pieces then go into the hottest of the 3 furnaces. She stood behind a protective screen while the 2 of us watched with our protective eyewear. We then moved to another bench where we shaped the beaks and tails ourselves with metalworking tongs. She guided us verbally and advised a very strong pinch and pull to shape. Our little creatures then went into the last of the 3 furnaces, at the lowest temp, where they would cool overnight. For our second piece, we would be shaping by blowing rather than tongs. A rubber tube and disposable mouth bit are used, which she demonstrated. She advised that we need to blow pretty forcefully, and watched us practice before saying "when." Again, she drew the molten glass from the first furnace, and handed the rod over for me to apply the frit colours I had chosen. She then manipulated it a bit before I came in with tube in mouth to blow and shape it. Also mind blowing to anticipate that I'd be using my creation at home! For the lamps, they provide a perpetual wick with the finished piecec, and you can get the paraffin oil at a local hardware store. Once again, our second pieces joined our first to cool in the third furnace before we could collect them. It's an expensive experience, but totally worth it. The expertise and special equipment involved are beyond. Our staff was super nice and answered a lot of questions by the time we were done. We were done early, but then we had started early. It was naturally warm in the studio, but the fans made it bearable. You need to return on another day to collect your finished items. They are packed and stored in an outdoor bench box at a house near the studio. Luckily there's some street parking nearby. I didn't have any trouble parking on a close by street and quickly picking up the bagged items in the box. You have 30 days to collect them, or they'll be disposed of. It was a great experience and memory. It was unique, and having the items afterwards is an awesome way to have your own art as a souvenir. I would come back as a gift to other loved ones again.
