I was introduced to the game of Skittle which was very similar to bowling but with a much smaller wooden ball and 9 wooden pins. It was a lot of fun. Where the skittle game was located used to be a stable because of this, in this area, the tables are set in the stalls which gives some privacy. There is also other dining areas around the pub as well as an outside seating area. The service was exceptional and the food was good. I ordered the cheddar cheese and chutney sandwich with crisps and a salad.

The room was very large which was nice. The bed was also very comfortable, and I liked the fact that we could open a window. In the room, I wasn't a fan of the large green glowing emergency light that stayed on all night. I'm not sure why it was there. We did not encounter this at any of the other places we stayed in England. The other thing that was a problem was the shower. The bathroom was a nice size, but in the shower, there was not enough slope on the tile to make the water drain, so the whole bathroom floor would get soaking wet, and the floor stayed wet for hours! My husband and I enjoyed playing darts at the Ancient Mariner pub and were glad that they actually had a dark beer, The Old Slug, beside Guinness. We also enjoyed their breakfast.

It's a medieval thatched building, located next to a country stream, with a (mainly) steam operated preserved railway (a former branch of the GWR - Great Western Railway or God's Wonderful Railway, according to locals) running on the adjacent embankment. So a quiet pint in its garden in summer certainly ticks the location boxes. And on the victualling side of the equation, the service is friendly, the (largely local) beers well kept, and the food very well prepared and well presented. The lunchtime menus are, perhaps, a little unadventurous, but the evening options are more varied. Highly commended.

It was really nice all the same. The fish was perfectly cooked and the pommes anna was a perfect accompaniment. The pub's decor probably didn't quite match the quality of the food and I think some people will be surprised how good the food it. The was a really good range on the menu from unusual items (I'd never had samphire before) to regular items such as burgers and fish and chips. The accommodation as we stayed there for 3 nights was OK, fairly clean and good value for money, although there was a few missed cobwebs on the walls, bed was a bit creaky (doesn't aid romance lol) and coat hangers in the wardrobe seem to break easily, the shower had water pressure problems, but a note was stuck on the shower door explaining water pressure problems within the area. My only gripe is with one of the male members of staff and how he treated my partner & I, we had reserved a table for dinner on the Thursday night as we overheard the barmaid explaining to someone else that it was one of their busiest nights, although to be honest in hindsight I don't think we needed to as there were plenty of tables left and reserving a table seemed to cause more problems than it was worth. We sat down at a table for two that was reserved (not thinking there was much difference from one table to the next), placed our order with no problem, then rudely got told that we had to move as someone else wanted the window seat, which we found rather petty, but it spoilt our last evening there and the fact is the other couple didn't get served food until we had finished our two course meal anyway. We chose here as a midway point to meet some Devon-based friends for dinner and were absolutely delighted. First the dinner compares to some of the best restaurants I've visited in the southwest. There isn't a trace of gastropub pretention. Most of the ingredients are made or sourced within a stone's throw of the village, including a beer brewed 150 years away. I chose hare starter, slow roasted belly pork with black pudding and apple (I know everywhere does belly pork these days but this was five star compared to the greasy hunks some places serve), and the somerset cheese board (vivid descriptions of local cheeses were too fascinating to resist). Second, the setting. Who could not love being nestled upstairs in a narrow, thatched barn, timber beams arching above, wood stoves crackling gently, with a blissful view of north somerset and exmoor?
