The best, most unique dining experience we had in Brussels!…read more It's a 15 minute walk NW from La Grand-Place de Bruxelles. Once you've entered Place St. Catherine, you're completely out of the main tourist district which is nice if you want something more authentic as opposed to overpriced and themepark-like. Viva M'Boma is small, clean and has an understated elegance in its simplicity. It's apparent once you see the menu that you are there to experience something you wouldn't normally get at most places that label themselves food-centric (they specialize in organs). Not only is the menu eclectic; they deliver hard core with flavors that are savory, intense and exquisite. For the starter we had Kirr with cassis as an aperitif that accompanied an order of pan-seared calf's brain in a beef boullion with onion and garlic, and a fois gras in a very traditional presentation. Both were outstanding and a good prelude of what was to come. We placed the second order once we finished our starters so that we could carefully select the next delicious offering as there were so many awesome things to choose from. I was tempted by the Pot-au-feu, essentially a stew of beef cheeks, oxtail and marrow, but was swayed by the waitress to the solomillo of horse, cooked blue and with a glass of St. Emilion. Yep, it was incredible! The meat was cooked expertly and the pairing showed of a true professional. My better half had veal cheeks that were stewed in beer and fell apart when you so much as touched them with the fork. This dish exploded with flavor and left us wanting to lick the plate after it was done. We finished the evening off with a house-made speculoos ice-cream (gingerbread) and caramelized apples... Pretty F'n awesome! We really enjoyed the experience, hospitality and knowledge of this establishment. We never felt rushed and all our questions were answered kindly and consummately. If you are in Brussels and are looking for something truly special, masterfully prepared and unlike anything you normally indulge in, please visit this place and stay away from Rue des Bouchers.

The interior is dark and fairly cozy which hides the fact they have a ton of seating, and they also have an outdoor patio. They have a special where you can get a 25% discount on food if you come after 6pm and leave before 8:20pm - you can specifically mark your reservation for the early bird discount. Staff is polite and prompt. They have english versions of all their menus. They have 2 pages of moule frites options, with english descriptions of what is in each. The mussels were absolutely delicious - they are smaller than what I've had before, and had a very buttery, melt-in-your-mouth texture. They're served each in their own pot which keeps the mussels piping hot as you eat them. The sauces they come with are plentiful and delicious, not too salty. The fries on the side are meaty and come with two different sauces. An absolute must visit in Brussels.

Spaghetti bolo for breakfast? Hell yeah!…read more After a morning jaunt through the flea market where I snatched up a fab porcelain pastry plate for 2E, my local host suggested a mid-morning snack at this 100% authentic Belgian café. As soon as we walked through the door my heart started to flutter. The wood paneled restaurant with its large central Zinc bar, gruff but friendly waiters, formica table tops with little napkin dispensers looks like it hasn't budged in 50 years. In a word: adorable! After examining the menu thoroughly I settled on the house specialty of spaghetti bolo and a café russe to wash it all down. An incongruous blend, I know, but hey, in a 24hr Belgian diner anything goes. Needless to say the bolo was like nothing I've ever had. Served over slightly overcooked vermicelli and topped with grated gruyere, the peppery, chunky bolognaise sauce had a regressive, quirky, heartiness to it that made the whole dish super fun to eat. If I lived in BXL I could see La Clef d'Or becomming a regular post flea market spot.

The ambiance is definitely meant for an intimate dinner but there are areas where you can have a nice fun dinner with friends or family. The waiter was super friendly and helpful and very patient with us because the menu was written in French so he helped walked us through the entire menu. The bread was super fresh and made in house and the butter was also homemade! Yum! It's definitely making me crave to go back just writing about it. All of the dishes are seasonal and are farm to table items. Super fresh! We started off with the burrata cheese, definitely my favorite cheese now. It's got almost the same texture as a mozzarella, maybe a bit creamier and a bit sweeter. We also got the foie gras, amazing! Just a dash of salt and seared to perfection, it just melts in your mouth. As for the entree we got the beef cheek that was braised for hours. It was soo tender that you can easily cut it with your fork. The flavors were so rich and well infused, delicious! Now for my favorite course, dessert! We got the vanilla creme brulee.
