Dining here was a bit of a time warp…read more I imagine the family from Dirty Dancing coming to Rowena's in their polos and tastefully long shorts and white sneakers, sitting down for dinner after arts and crafts and canoe lessons. Family fun times! 'Merica! The inside of Rowena's looks like it hasn't been updated in decades, though that might be changing considering the blocked off section when you walk in. But there is a bit of charm to this quaint eating place in the state park. It has an awe-inspiring view of Lake Cumberland. The scenery around the lake is breath-taking, so it's only right that this spot have such a vantage point. The waitresses were the epitome of friendliness, and the food definitely took me back to a time before farm-to-table awareness, organic farming and culinary daredevils. I got the seafood special, which included fried shrimp poppers, fried catfish filets, hushpuppies and fries. The catfish was cooked fantastically. I've had some in which the breading was mushy, and others in which the fish was fried until it was crispy and dry on the inside. This was a great balance, in which the fish easily pulled apart with a fork. This dish also came with a visit to the "salad bar" -- a few containers of mixed lettuce, cherry tomatoes, grated cheese and salad dressing. The salad bar also has some pasta salad, that was quite good though. Overall I enjoyed my meal of fried deliciousness. So why only three stars? Well first of all, there was a definite fly problem in the dining room -- not so much to where they were crawling on the food but enough to where they were noticeable. And second, their hamburgers look disgusting. The child in our group ordered one, and the patty was paper thin, definitely looked nuked. I'm not looking for gourmet here, but I would hope for quality that surpasses the most basic of fast food options. With these things in mind, I'd recommend Rowena's -- if for nothing else than its killer view.

She…read moretold us about their famous catfish sandwich and my husband said she was spot on with the review of the fish. It was breaded with a light cornmeal and was crunchy and delicious. We ordered the fried mushrooms and they were lightly battered. They were amazing. They served them with ranch. Amazing. I had the regular cheeseburger which was cooked perfectly and served with crinkle French fries. I loved every bite. For dessert, my husband had warmed Dutch apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. What a way to end a meal!! I had the coconut cream pie which was fabulous as well. I would highly recommend this little place that serves amazing food with friendly faces. Thanks, Vickie and gang‼ Well done.

I was…read morevisiting at the Bernard Funeral home in Russell Springs and had lunch afterwards at Esto's based on the reviews of their catfish dinner my friend was interested in. She indeed had the catfish dinner with cole slaw and onion rings. And she loved it, a huge order that would also be her dinner for the evening. I opted for the philly cheese steak sandwich tgat came with one side, coke slaw. The slaw was good and the sandwich was served with oinions and green peppers (I declined the mushrooms). It too was very good, steak was tender and the veggies were hot but still crunchy on a hoagie bun that was toasted. We had coconut and butterscotch pie for dessert. We split both slices and both, homemade were very tasty. Meriguine pilled high with creamy filling and great flavor. Plenty of parking, decent prices. They also have a drive thru. Service was efficient and friendly, although we did have to go up to the counter to order our desserts since the waitress didn't come back after we finished our meal to take our dessert orders. But the girl at the counter was nice enough to cut both slices of pie in half and put half of each in to go containers. Typical counrty cafe with clean bathrooms, a few booths, tables and a pay at the counter set up. I wouldn't drive 2 hours to eat here but if in the area I would return.
