Decided to go the Pie Kitchen since I found out they serve Derby Pie (aka pecan chocolate chip pie) and their prices are way cheaper than the one served downtown, and I'm definitely glad I did! They offer an assortment of classics desserts as well as unique, local desserts. We stopped in at the new location just a little bit further down the road when we were in the nearby area. I have to be honest -- I liked the prior location more, but I understand in the current times that rents and leases and overhead cause some tough business decisions to have to be made to remain solvent. I had a scoop each of mocha chip and chocolate peanut butter ice cream in a dish and it was tasty. Employees were efficient and friendly with service. Display cases seem smaller than at the prior location, but that could be because the inside seating area is smaller. Tables with seating for 4 are available, but I felt this would be more of a takeout business for cakes and pies. The parking lot, however, is quite large in the lot located beside the business and just a few spaces at the road frontage lot. read more

The cakes and treats we picked up were tasty... But the service given to those who are less fortunate was disappointing. Sadden me and daughter to watch and hear the staff belittling one of the cities homeless. It was entirely too hot outside and in order to ensure they'd let him stay in I paid for his order and got him an extra cake which they didn't even want to serve him. I had to ask them to let him pick out what he wanted... the snark and sarcasm.... The comments made... I understand he in the past took a few bucks out the tip jar to pay for something to eat- but clearly he's hungry enough to do that... show some kindness and grace. Talking bad about him won't help! Showing him more harm won't help... I know these two girls are young and clearly haven't been through anything in life and can understand how fortunate they are enough to give to others. That's a lesson they'll end up learning the hard way and that's sad. Even if this location is convenient... I can't imagine going back if this is how they allow the staff to treat people who are already going through enough trauma and don't need to be mistreated and put down further into the dirt. read more

And the fact that they deliver? Done done done! I ordered a slice of Old Fashioned Pecan and Chocolate Chip pie, made with bourbon. Pie was so gross! I have been buying this pie & desserts long before it was sold by the original owners and made into a chain. The original being at Bardstown & Travelian. The Dutch apple Carmel apple pie crust was soggy. There was some weird chemical taste in the filling. The crust was undercooked and wet. There was zero redeeming qualities. They should be ashamed to serve this. People work to hard for their money. The whole thing was actually nasty. I hate to say it, but it is true . The last few years it has become literally nasty. Came with my family for pi day! First time here and everything was great! Wonderful customer service and a vast selection of pies, ice creams and other desserts. Never heard of a chess pie and tried strawberry rhubarb pie for the first time! The strawberry- rhubarb pie tasted like a tart cherry pie. The server recommended creme brûlée ice cream with it, and it was a perfect pairing. I was told by a customer that the chess pie was like an egg custard. My daughters both ordered chocolate chess and it tasted what I imagine a brownie pie would taste like. The crust was crumbly and perfectly proportioned to the pie and ice cream. I typically don't order ice cream here and wasn't prepared for the large size of the Creme Brûlée ice cream ordered. However, it seemed like a unique flavor so decided to just eat about half the generous amount served. I love actual creme brûlée once or twice a year. The ice cream had an initial flavor reminiscent of the ' vanilla creaminess' but a very odd texture and a taste of ribbons of 'melted plastic' that were maybe supposed to be caramel. Not that I've ever knowingly ingested actual melted plastic but the odd flavor vs actual caramel was a no go. Wow. What a place. My husband and I were looking to indulge a little and stumbled across Homemade Ice Cream & Pie on our way home. The menu was packed full of delicious items to try, and thankfully the waitress saw our overwhelmed faces and offered to walk us through everything We had samples of a couple ice creams before deciding and ended up with the Dutch Apple caramel pie warmed up with sugar free vanilla ice cream and a double scoop of grape & blue raspberry for the hubby. The Dutch Apple caramel pie was phenomenal warmed up with ice cream on top, I don't think it could get any better. The caramel icing was a little thick in places and lead to a sugar shock but was totally worth it! The ice cream had a great texture and was super creamy. Not really sure if we went on a bad day or what was going on. Floor was so sticky, displays were really smudged. The berry pie I had wasn't great. My husband found their ice cream and the cupcake ball to be good. Giving three stars because the desserts were fine in taste. Out of towners and looking for a sweets spot, we decided to stop in for some dessert to take back to the hotel. We love pies and had to try the Dutch apple caramel pie they're known for. Guys, it's not just a measly little caramel drizzle on top. It is a thick layer of caramel frosting on top of the streusel topped apple pie. Rich is an understatement and I didn't enjoy the big pieces of streusel crumbles. The apple filling was delicious so perhaps just the regular apple pie would be more tasty for me. We also got the mixed berry and key lime pies. I enjoyed the lime custard but wished it was more tart to balance out the sweetness of the crust and cream topping. The mixed berry was my favorite one but have to say presentation was lacking for the price. Their cakes looked food but I didn't get a chance to try it. Haven't been to The Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen in quite some time, but it sounded really good this evening. I had the Dutch Apple Pie (one of their specialties) warmed with cinnamon ice cream on the side. When the two flavors/textures merge, it's the closest thing to my Mom's Apple Dumplings that I can think of and THAT is high praise indeed! My wife had her usual, the chess pie, which she said was also quite tasty. My biggest gripe with THIC&PK is that their prices have gone pretty much sky high. One piece of pie is now almost five bucks and a single scoop of ice cream is two bucks. I know inflation is a thing, but really!! Since we only come here once in a blue moon anymore, I guess I can't or shouldn't complain, but their prices have gotten really outrageous. Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen is a really solid local dessert option. I'm usually not a big pie fan, but I'll make an exception for this place. I've visited a couple of different times and had the Key Lime Pie, Reese's Pie, and Oreo Cheesecake. The Oreo Cheesecake is the winner for me, although I've been known to have a bias toward cheesecake. The Reese's Pie was really good as well - light, fluffy, almost like a mousse. I just wished there was more of it! The Key Lime Pie was a little disappointing. My wife and I agreed it was lacking the Key Lime filling and mostly contained crust and whipped cream. This place makes me wished I lived in Louisville again. Oh my goodness, it is delicious! I really don't know what says "Welcome Home" more than their Dutch Caramel Apple pie. Thick, fudge like caramel tops off the best apple pie I've ever had. Flaky crust with just enough crunch and deliciousness. We stopped in to grab a slice and sit around to share. Though I wasn't really in the sharing mood, it's hard to eat a whole slice because this pie is so rich and tasty, you can get full quickly. The only trouble was they were not keeping a good eye on the coffee bar and supposedly there was an issue with a handicap path to the bathrooms. Though I did see them working on clearing the path, I'm not 100% sure how that worked out. I grew up on Graeter's, but when a branch of the Ice Cream and Pie kitchen opened up close to where I live, I definitely earned my Conehead badge on Yelp with my frequent visits. If you're in the mood for pie, the chocolate chess and Caramel Dutch Apple pie cannot be beat. Totally worth the calories, and the Caramel Dutch Apple is enough sugar to give you a toothache! The chess pie isn't bad, but I prefer the chocolate chess when I'm here. I usually don't try any others since I have found my favorites, but I imagine it would be difficult to find a bad thing on the menu Ice cream is smooth, fresh, and delicious. The kind of melt-in-your mouth heaven that not every ice cream joint can replicate. Try one, try them all -- you probably won't be able to decide on a favorite. I'm a fan! read more

Homemade Pie & Ice Cream isn't my first choice for ice cream, but they have good pies and cakes. I find their ice cream to be a bit icy when compared with Comfy Cow or Graeter's. The one exception is their seasonal, rum raisin. The consistency problem is still there, but no one else in town makes my beloved flavor. I will seek it out when I know they are making it. Now for the baked goods, I love their blueberry (and peach) pie with a big scoop or vanilla ice cream. The warm pie melts the ice cream turning it into more of sauce. The crust stands up to the fruit and the filling isn't too sweet. Of their cakes, the strawberry and hummingbird are excellent. Check out the bargain tables in any of their locations. You can't often score delicious treats at a discount. read more
