Kind of like a cycling class but on a treadmill, with intervals timed to different songs and a motivating instructor coaching you along the way. The studio is divided into two parts. There's a large area with mats on the ground for yoga and circuit training, and another room with about ten treadmills, half Woodway and half more of your standard design. They have six different classes. Some incorporate more weights and circuit training, some involve yoga, and some are focused simply on running. I was happy they had a 6:00 am class for those that like to get their workout done early! I could see myself becoming a member if I lived in Cville or Richmond where the other studio is. Besides the classes, the group likes to get together outside of the studio. The day I went was Global Running Day and they were reuniting later at a brewery for a run outdoors and some drinks. The space was very lovely, spacious and convenient parking wise. All the teachers and students were friendly. During classes I appreciated each teacher as they all have their own personality and provided a safe place to really re-ground. My last class was the candlelight on Thursday and instantly after class I thought, I'm really going to miss this studio. I hope to visit again when I'm in town. Super clean and cozy. As a beginner yogi, I am always wanting feedback on my form, and I appreciated that the instructors would stay after and answer any questions I had and also give me additional feedback. However, my latest experience after the 30 day trial wasn't the best, and I don't think I'll be returning. I attended my first aerial level 2 class, and I felt like a burden the entire time. It appeared that everyone was already well bonded--which was fine, but there wasn't much explanation behind any of the poses, and it was expected that I know poses that were completely foreign coming from level one. This was really discouraging, and I know I have a lot of room for growth in my practice, but I'd rather do it in a space where I feel comfortable with where I am in my practice.

I visited upstairs and did the elliptical, some free weights and a leg press. all worked great. I was disappointed to learn that ACAC as a multi-location workout facility doesn't have a membership tier that is inclusive for temporary/non-residents. it's either, you buy a one-time pass for $25; a three-day one; or a full monthly. nothing in between. Charlottesville itself is known for having a very transient, ever-changing population so this policy doesn't make sense to me. When I was there, some weirdo was on the stairclimber making this god-awful coughing noise about every 10 seconds. look, I know everyone has their workout quirks but spreading your germs around knowingly (in the age of airborne viruses like COVID) is a bad idea. I brought it to the attention of the desk attendant and she did not seem particularly phased by the news. ACAC Downtown is within walking distance of my flat/crashpad so I will go back. but I'm just hoping they either bring back the punch card or institute a program for non-residents to make life a bit easier.

The women's locker room is disgusting, it smells and there is hair all over the floor and on the shower walls and floor. The hot tub is dirty too. The locker room is way over due for an overhaul. The lockers are dirty and don't get cleaned out ever. It doesn't make sense to have kids in the women's locker room either. Have a family area for changing clothes. Also, the pool is always overrun by kids and it's loud. Terrible gym don't waste your time or money.

He is the laziest employee they have. He acts like he is going out of his way to answer a question. All he wants to do is click on membership cards and stand there. I also don't like they allow kids in there. Some are running around screaming on the track and could knock over someone that is in rehab from a stroke. Kids do not belong in there using the equipment and rarely are the parents around. Make a gym for kids if you want them in there, otherwise have them go to the Kid's Zone.

Glad we got a membership here (although generally more expensive than I normally would pay for a gym membership) and I do recommend the family rate since it's the most cost effective. It is an incredibly clean and organized facility with lots of options for cardio and weight training. I love the spin classes which are available almost daily and various hours of the day. The instructors for spin classes are all incredible and challenging yet approachable and encouraging. The indoor walking/running track is awesome boasting large beautiful window seats which offer beautiful views of the trees behind the building. There's even a child care facility onsite! The design of the building itself is also thoughtful. There are locker rooms but multiple cubbies and jacket racks for storage. There are two levels , the lower level with the basketball court and yoga/ studio rooms as well as a large weight training area. Not to knock the local fitness centers but I was a longtime member of ACAC however due to a job change I could no longer afford that membership. I've waited 4 years to rejoin a gym and the Brooks Family YMCA is definitely worth the wait. Everyone I meet at the YMCA appears to be as satisfied as I am and why not?!? We have the cleanest, most modern and affordable facility with the most amenities in Charlottesville, Va. Thank You to everyone who had a hand in brining this YMCA to our area.
