6 of us ladies were going to a concert at the OPAC. One of them had mentioned this place because of the story they knew about & wanted to check it out. It was on my "to do list" but just hasn't happened until now. But here's part of the story... The Peerless Saloon has been a staple in Anniston since 1899, but it's not just known for its cocktails... some say it's home to a lingering spirit. Meet Lucinda Talley, who once reigned over the upstairs brothel until tragedy struck in 1920. Legend has it, she's never really left... still watching from her post at the top of the stairs and causing a bit of mischief. Dare to visit the Peerless during the spooky season? Found by Yelp, arrived it little off main road but only by a few blocks. Has a small parking lot. Ordered firecrackers those was a great start. Order fish basket and BYO Burger and added bleu cheese and bacon. Both with side of onions petals. Sign on window out side says please wait to be seated. What a great restaurant (The oldest in Alabama, built in 1899), The vaulted ceiling's looked original and beautiful. They had chandeliers hanging from them. Our waiter was very accommodating one person in our party couldn't climb stairs, so he seated us downstairs. Our waiter was very friendly, and knew the menu well. Everyone's food came out fast and it all looked delicious. I got the BLT with fried green tomatoes (Tomatoes and/or breading needed some seasoning.) my husband's steak quesadilla was really good, I had a bite. I recommend eating here and enjoy. read more

The other side is a cool historic bar with great drink specials and live music. New management is really doing great! The history of the Peerless is worth the trip alone. The Peerless is a must-visit location for locals and tourists. It is definitely a hidden gem in Anniston that should not be missed. They have a great selection of food and you really can't go wrong with anything. It sounds silly but I especially love their chips and salsa. They fry their own tortilla/wonton chips and they are amazing! Fried Green Tomatoes - very good and come with tasty chips. Quesadilla is a winner. The Ultimate Open Face Roast Beef is a local favorite but it is super heavy and isn't something I'd order again. Around Thanksgiving every year they do a Thanksgiving sandwich and that's my favorite thing to come in for. The atmosphere is really nice. The restaurant is in a historic building and the saloon part is advertised as Alabama's oldest saloon so that's pretty neat. read more

After a fun weekend at Mt Cheaha, we had an 11 AM check-out before our trip back to Birmingham. So we decided a stop in Anniston for lunch would be a great way to get back on the interstate quickly. Everyone was hoping for something with curbside pick-up, local and in the heart of downtown. BOOM Yelp App coming in hot with a suggestion. Peerless here we come!! We wanted something easy to eat in the car and we are a chicken finger kind of family. So when we saw they were hand breaded, it was a no-brainer all the way around. Our biggest mistake was not calling earlier. We waited till we found the actual restaurant. But how do you expect hand breaded chicken fingers to be ready in a few minutes? But it did give us the opportunity to put pull ups on our toddlers, grab some drinks from the cooler and check out the Anniston area. Something none of us had ever done before. Everything was fantastic. And note, it was takeout fried food. I can only imagine what it is like fresh, in the restaurant and straight out of the kitchen. The price was also incredible. Great spot. Can't wait to go back and visit when things get back to normal. read more

In town for work and found the online ordering. It was a quick and easy process. I had the muffuletta with tots. One side was absolutely full and amazing. The other half, not so much. Yes, there was enough meat on one side to split it, but I shouldn't have to. But, nonetheless the food was good. The service when I arrived was prompt. My grandma in-law decided to treat my husband and I to a dinner out in Anniston recently and we were both pleasantly surprised with the Peerless Saloon and Grille (we only visited the "grille" side, but the saloon looked cool too). The building itself is beautiful, lots of exposed woodwork and well designed chalkboards featuring menu and drink specials. At first, we were worried it would be a noisy night as a group of women nearby were enjoying their holiday "spirits". Their food came and they quieted down- a good sign for our bellies and ears! I got the Big Nasty Panini with blackened chicken, the garlic Romano ranch, and a side of sweet potato fries. The panini was the cheesiest, most delicious panini I've had a in long time. I savored every bite! It was a good amount of food, too. Some paninis wimp out and leave you wanting more but this one did the job. The sweet potato fries were good, but they weren't salty like I expected. They had cinnamon sugar sprinkled on top and were served with a small cup of maple syrup. It wasn't my favorite version of the sweet potato fry. If I had wanted so much sugar, I wouldn't try and disguise it in a vegetable! That's just me though... The fries were very good, just be aware that they're sweet, not salty! Our waitress was kind, attentive, and quick to help us out. The bathrooms were clean, parking was easy (it was a Tuesday night, though), and it was overall a very pleasant dining experience. I'm excited to see such a nice restaurant doing well in Anniston! Stopped in with a large group on a Thursday night. Seemed a little small until they seated us upstairs. Although we were the only ones upstairs (for a short while), our service was pretty good. There's also restrooms and a bar (not open that night) upstairs. I tried the Italian Muffuletta sandwich with a salad. Both were pretty good! We also tried the fried pickles too...they too were crispy and good. This place is located near the downtown area (I believe). There were no other busy restaurants close by that I noticed. If I'm back in the area again, this would definitely be one of my choices. read more

I was bored and I read about this place on the Alabama tourism web page, so I went. My only complaint about the place was it was colder inside than it was outside. I had the Ultimate Open-Faced Roast Beef. ...but I am a picky eater. I'm not a fan of mashed potatoes. So I asked them to sub that out for some mac & cheese, which they were happy to do. Walked in with my hot wife for a Saturday night dinner hoping to set the mood with great drink and comfort food. Quiet conversation and good atmosphere. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. The atmosphere was actually the Burger King playground. Noisy with kids screaming and trampolining on the 2nd floor. After our 1st drink we had to ask "Is there a torture chamber upstairs?". Oh no- it's a BABY SHOWER at the local tavern. You know- a drinking establishment that adults visit. You'd think the staff would be concerned that their main source of income- adults - would be annoyed that a freight train was passing overhead across the hours. I guess I expected a higher degree of intelligence. The food was good as was the drink. But I had a "concert headache" when I left. Ears ringing from the infantile echo chamber above, i actually looked forward to leaving. Our server was apologetic. But if I was the owner, I'd rethink the open space upstairs and exclude the romper room events. read more

So this place is actually pretty awesome. From the outside it looks a bit like a basic neighborhood bar, and when you walk in you could get the same impression, but a closer look around and you notice that someone's taken a bit of time to spruce this place up and make it unique. It's got a sort of narrow yet deep sort of shape to it, and a hallway that leads to more seating in the back and stairs that lead to even more seating on the 2nd floor. Booths, tables, a bar with seating so good options there for small or bigger groups. Interesting decorations, a distinct, intentional vibe and an overall welcoming atmosphere. As far as the room goes, definitely not a bad place to get a bite to eat, a drink, or both. They've got a fairly broad menu with a variety of interesting things that go beyond your standard bar food. You might ride by and think..."burgers and chicken fingers", but you'd be wrong to do so. Someone back there in the kitchen has got a few tricks up their sleve and it's worth stopping in to see what's going on. The menu does have a good selection of your standard bar fare, but it goes a bit beyond that in that there are some seafood options, and some meat and 3 type sides that you wouldn't expect to see. Also, there's a huge chalk wall which has a variety of specials listed across it, and I assume these are things that may rotate in and out. I do love a place that keeps the menu fresh, so points for that. We started with fried mac and cheese which included some kind of sauce that seemed like a vodka sauce but more cheesy. I expected it to be good and it was better than I expected. My friend opted for a "shrimp stack" which included shrimp, fried green tomatoes and something else...i can't remember...but it looked pretty good and they seemed to enjoy it. I opted for one of the specials on the chalk wall...2, 4oz filet medallions with a few sides and they let me kind of mix and match a few things because I wanted to try a range of what they had to offer. Fingerling potatoes, black eyed peas and a sweet potato casserole. All of it was amazing. The filet came out medium rare and was flavorful and tender, the potatoes were seasoned just right and piping hot, the black eyed peas really stood out and that's no easy task for black eyed peas....the sweet potato casserole...Jesus...seriously....include this in my last meal. It was outstanding. So a nice room with a cool vibe, better than expected, creative and well executed food, full bar, better than average beer selection, (stone, dogfish head, snake handler on draft), and here's the real kicker, the reason for the 5th star...the prices. Incredible. The filet medallions with 2 sides was under 20 bucks. Can't beat that value. It's not fine dining, but it is a great example of "elevated" bar food. Couldn't ask for more. read more

When my grandma told me she was taking me to a saloon I became worried, but soon found out that this place is a great lunch or dinner stop ("saloon" must have different meanings to different people). It is pretty cute on the inside and has easy access street parking. The food was on the upper-end of sandwich food that I have had, and my burger was delicious. I also got the mac n cheese which was good, but my grandma got the squash casserole which was AMAZING! I would definitely get this next time. Absolutely delicious! I had the hand battered fried shrimp and husband had the fried catfish. They were both cooked perfectly with just the right amount of batter. My daughter had the Cuban sandwich which was loaded with pork. It was very good! My other children had the minis plate, one with burgers and the other with chicken. Both were extremely happy! However I took my MIL there for her birthday dinner and the owner/ supervisor decided this was the best time to reprimand people about greeting guests hello and bye when they leave in front of patrons. This was a pleasant surprise visiting this joint. Very unassuming from the curb, however once inside, plenty of dining /bar space and has a partial upstairs and a separate saloon side, with additional dining and billiards table and darts. Food was excellent and very fair prices. Interesting old building with a long History. We ate on the "saloon" side, with a 110 year old bar. Lunch today; big crowd on a Monday. Don't know whether it's normal, but sort of seems like maybe not, since they seemed very unprepared for the number of customers. Took about 20 minutes for a waiter to come (& only after we hunted him down). First salad was served about 45 minutes after we were seated, so might want to be wary if you have a short lunch break. The food (oysters, in my case, corn meal dusted ) arrived at approximately one hour after we sat down. With that said, the oysters were very good, and the warm kale greens (salad ) were delicious (maybe the sinful bacon mixed with the healthy kale). Price is moderate for the area... 4 people are lunch for $60 plus tip. So if you're not in a hurry, this a great place. read more

This is one of those places where everything on the menu is good. They usually have specials where they cook something that isn't on the menu. One of the owners cooks the desserts herself and they are AMAZING. A few of my favorite entrees are the big nasty panini, the shrimp stacker, and any of the tacos. They make the chicken and fish three different ways: friend, grilled, or blackened. The servers are very friendly and the atmosphere is nice. They have a bar on each side of the restaurant and have several selections of draft beers. Very good place for lunch and dinner! read more

Driving through AL and someone at our hotel recommended the Peerless Saloon. So glad we went! Stacy (and all staff) was very welcoming, personifying Southern hospitality. We had fried green tomatoes, brussel sprouts with bacon, gulf shrimp basket, and shrimp and grits. All was delicious. The building is really cool maintaining historical archictural integrity. Totally recommend this for anyone, but particularly travellers who want to get off the interstate and experience something local. read more

I'm an new to town and have been sampling all the local offerings. Last night went to the Peerless because I really wanted a burger. I did the special which was BYO ( build your own) Burger with homemade fresh potato chips. I had the fried pickles as an appetizer. The burger though unusually shaped ( long like the sub bun it was on) was juicy and DELICIOUS. The fried pickles were zesty and crispy on the outside. They paired lovely with the dipping sauce, that seemed to be a homemade Romulade. The chips were hot, crisp and lightly salted. The only complaint I had was it was cold in the dining area...I realize the building is older and hard to heat and cool but they may want to look into a electric fireplace or two. It would add great ambience and much needed warmth. read more

Inside the Most RAD old historic building ever! There is a restaurant 'grille' side and a saloon side...both serve food and both have all the same offerings on menu! LOVE the atmosphere! Love the local 'characters' to people watch while I was there. Great appetizers and the wings were phenomenal!! They have specials every day of the week and also have live music and entertainment almost every night! This is THE place to go in Anniston (Fun-iston) if you only have one night to spend/want to check out the night scene, eat a great meal, or spend some time with the locals!
