I got the bangers and mash while by wife got the cottage pie. I think I got the better meal as the sausages were really tasty and the whole grain mustard in the potatoes was a great way to elevate the potatoes. Her cottage pie was fine but didn't have a ton of flavor. Food came out surprisingly quickly, but we also had an order of chips which was crazy slow to come out of the kitchen. The chips were quite good but we'd both finished our entire meals and most of our beers by the time we got them. Beer options were solid, some good German choices. Beer was cheap too.

This place is not trying to play up on an image like many of the bars in this areas and sticks instead to the important business of being a damn fine pub. Being quite small there is a naturally cosy feel to the place and this is complimented by the decor wuth lots of wood panelling and comfy seats. The bar has a great selection of draft and bottled beers and, for the summer months, there is an excellent beer garden. I've yet to try the food but they do serve traditional pub grub between 12 and 5 Tuesday through Sunday. With a great atmosphere, warm and friendly bar staff and an excellent range of drinks, The Carpenters Arms is a brilliant place for a relaxing evening or a great stop-in after a hard days shop.

Good selection of craft beers - check Nice wines - check Places to sit, not just stand - check Live music sessions - check Friendly staff - check Delicious food - check Board games - check It also allows dogs, and they have water bowls for them if you have a dog or want to go and coo over someone else's! We went for a Sunday roast and it coincided with when they had a live jazz band playing. It's quite shabby chic, but really quite big. There's a room out the back which is more of a dining room but we stayed in the front bit as that's where the music was. It was busy but we got a table and people came and went so there was normally space for those arriving. The roast dinner was the best I've probably ever had out, certainly in London and at £12 each it wasn't bad at all. There was so much meat (we both had the lamb) and it was so tender and juicy. It had the largest, tastiest homemade Yorkshire pudding I've ever seen, crispy goose fat roast potatoes and perfectly cooked parsnip, carrots and cabbage. It had really delicious gravy too. The drinks were cheap and the jazz band were brilliant. When they weren't playing, there was a guy in the corner with decks playing LPs. There have been some comments on here from other reviewers about the toilets. The ladies were really clean and nicely decorated so may have been refurbished recently. My boyfriend went to the men's and said they weren't the best but not that bad so they may have had some work recently too. This pub is really handy for Forest Gate station and also Wanstead. We had a lovely walk around Wanstead Flats before going to the pub so there's lots to do if you travel to the area. We'll definitely be visiting a lot more.

However, step but a a hundred metres…read more(or maybe even less - my ability to judge distance is shaky at best) down Coborn Road, and you'll find this gem of a Youngs pub. I should note that I've only been in lunchtime and mid afternoon - I've not visited this pub in the evening. However, I cannot fault the Coborn Arms as a lunchtime pub. Both the front outside patio and the interior are spotlessly clean. There is a vegetable garden out the side (which punters sadly cannot trespass on, though I was allowed to nick a wonderfully sweet and ripe cherry tomato after its harvest), and the interior of the pub is large and airy. There is a mixture of seating, from a few comfy sofas, to 'normal' pub chairs and tables. The patio has large, clean benches with enormous canopies over the top. I have been once in the early evening (getting to darkness) and the outside is well lit and welcoming. I drink, in a Youngs pub, Youngs Special, and have never had a duff pint. The beer is kept beautifully and served well. The beer is a tad dear, (around £3.00 a pint), but this is to be expected for a London pub (even East London). The staff are friendly (very much so) and efficient. The bar has reminders for staff and customers alike to smile, and signs containing pithy or poignant quotes and sayings. There is a large(ish - not as enormous as a Wetherspoons, but that to my mind is a bonus) menu. I've eaten here at lunchtime a couple of times, and the food is very good, if brown (I had a burger one time and shared a Sausage Feast the second). I'm surprised not to see more vegetable offerings, given the existence of the vegetable garden at the side. The loos are clean and well stocked (I like the individual hand towels piled next to the sink in the ladies', and a wicker basket to place them in once you're done). Needless to say, I cannot speak for the men's rooms! I have tried a couple of the pubs along Bow Road - I needn't do so again - this is by far the best. Well done.

It basks in its jazzy history and prides itself on its famous and not so famous clientele - including one Mr Jim Bowen of Bullseye fame. Everything about this place is rooted in the past; from the salt 'n' shake crisps to the ancient cash till that does that little ring when it opens. I love it like I love an ancient relative who still dances at weddings. The whole place is lit up like a brothel in an alluring red glow that draws you in like a moth. The interior is cozy and cluttered with interesting pictures and photos to draw the eye. The Palm Tree offers regular entertainment from live bands and though the majority of customers are certainly of the elder variety there's still a very fun element to this place. Definitely one for those lazy Sunday afternoons and quiet weekday evenings.

From outside, the pub looks as if no work has been done for years, but still charming as it is quite old and these buildings are not a common site anymore. Its kind of a weird name for a pub, I didn't see any palm trees in there and nor were there pictures of palm trees on the walls. I sat there for a while and watched my mate loose a match of darts, what a boring game, but I had my good friend beer to keep me company and it wasn't at too much of an expense, its really cheap in here. I got the impression that it's a local's pub, it works with the community and has teams like the darts to get their punters involved with the pub, and that's alywas a good thing. I doubt I will ever be going here again, but for what it's worth, it's a nice pub, vitage!
