I went back for the (fall) double-dipped milk chocolate covered peanuts as I didn't see them in the cases so, I asked the clerk. She said, yes then proceeded to scoop up something unfamiliar. I said, "That seems different than what I got before?" She responded, oh that was the fall batch. I was going to get 2 Lbs. then I decided on one 1 pound. Got to give this joint a 5. It is a small shop but doesn't need to be huge to impress me. The smell of fresh roasted nuts wafts at you as you walk in. The staff is friendly and ready to answer questions. They offer candies as well as nuts and they were gracious enough to give us a sample so we could pick which candy we liked best. Lots of nut choices that are salted and some more popular types that were not. They had a cherry blend with nuts that made my heart give a pity-patter of delight. Some coworkers of mine came here after a meeting a few weeks ago, and they brought back some samples to share with us. They were really impressed, so when I found myself in East Lansing, I decided to find this store and come here as well. The aroma when you walk into this tiny store is just amazing. The people are very friendly as well. I love that they sell as small as 1/4 pound, and they put the prices right next to the items. I ended up with cashews, Spanish peanuts (I haven't seen those in years!) regular peanuts and sweet peanut squares. They were an excellent snack for my journey home! And a very nice surprise was that the parking meters are free on weekends! read more

By chance I parked outside The Peanut Shop while on a photo shoot. The glorious old store front had me intrigued. I stopped in after the shoot. The store is small but crammed with nuts, candied nuts and candy. It seemed like stepping back into the 1950's in the best way. The store was packed but there was plenty of staff and I was on my way in no time. Glad I discovered this Lansing classic by accident. Cute little shop. We saw it while driving through the area. My husband loves this kind of stuff. The store was cute. A lot of different types nuts and even some candies. They roast about 90% of the nuts in house. The stars was because of service. It was a bit stodgy and they weren't very friendly or welcoming. While I moved away from Lansing twenty years ago, I make it a point to stop by The Peanut Shop whenever I have the chance. I remember my parents taking me here when I was a small fry, I remember them buying me Student Mix, before I knew what a Student was. I fell in love with sesame sticks and to this day cant pass them by. During this trip we brought my four-year-old son, he was in love with the place, particularly after he saw the candies. We started ordering and got a few different things, Student Mix (of course), Sesame Sticks (can't not get them), popcorn, California something or other (has all kinds of dried fruit) and a few different peanuts for my wife. Then came the candy and the reason this isn't five stars. My kid is four, so of course he wants all the candies. I told him since he is four, he can have four pieces. The clerk immediately told me that the minimum is 1/8 of a pound. It isn't that they have a minimum, though given the rest of my purchase, maybe waiving that minimum would have been a nice touch, but regardless, the delivery of the minimum requirement wasn't well timed, as well he is four, doesn't understand fractions and I didn't want him to have 1/8 of a pound of taffies. So I told her that he would just have the four pieces of taffy and I would take the rest in another candy, she asked me how many, and I tried to say as politely as possibly, whatever the required amount is to meet the minimum. The nuts and candies were great, the customer service was not spectacular. But that won't stop me from coming in, everyone can have an off day. (Though after writing this, I am scrolling a number of the reviews and it would seem rudeness is a common thread.) read more

I like this place. I like the nostalgia. I like that they've been around for 80 years. I like the prices. I like the product. I like that they weigh the nuts using an old-fashioned scale and putting weights on the other side. I go out of my way to go here. So, why two stars? The service. It's like you're doing them a favor by walking in their front door. The owner, sets the tone. Instead of greeting people, especially people that have been in there dozens, if not hundreds of times, she stands there with a frown on her face and the staff follows suit. No small talk, no "how you doing?", just "do you know what you want?" and get the scoop out to weigh it. Now leave. I've been a fan of the Peanut Shop for years. They have amazing nuts. I love their different mixes. Once I had Peanut Shop nuts, I never wanted to go back to Planters again. These nuts are so fresh, crunchy and delicious. They truly elevate nuts to a new level. I love giving these nuts for small gifts to friends and family. FYI: There is a small charge for credit cards. Maybe all credit cards or maybe only if under a certain purchase amount. It isn't very much. Also good to know: The shop is in a small space and the people who work there seem to try to keep things moving along. Have To "Chime In" The nuts are great and the prices are extremely reasonable (3 Stars). The service (2 Stars) like many of the other people have said is not very good. From the "stodgy" feeling you get from the owner to "no pictures" of the peanut man or we will confiscate your phone to not recognizing repeat customers who have spend $1,000's of dollars in this business over the years! In addition to that the City of Lansing is just ridiculous with their parking meters. I ran in for nuts and was ticketed within the 5 minutes I was in there. I asked the ticket police for a conversation and she gestured one minute to me as she got in her car and drove away! I followed her around the corner and she parked in front of the office where you pay your tickets. I asked her nicely does the City of Lansing give people who support local businesses a 5 or 10 minute hold for in and out purchases? She pointed her finger at the parking office and said they can help you sir! Well I walked in and the person behind the desk slumped in her chair didn't have any answer for me other than $15 please, plus an insulting $1 administrative fee, FOR WHAT! One word: RUDE! I've attempted to give this place a chance on multiple occasions, yet every time I've entered the tiny, hot shop, I'm met with glares, crossed arms, and huffs. Like they just can't wait for you to leave. They'll rush you, and get upset if you don't know exactly what you want upon entering. I don't think I've ever seen a smile from a single person working there so far, and to be honest, you could get exactly the same candies at the dollar store for 1/4 the price. Just the smell of this place brings back memories. My mom worked downtown when we were small children and she would sometimes bring us a bag of peanuts from here. But, what we loved the most was actually heading down town to go to the shop ourselves. We could get all bundled up in snowsuits, hats, and scarves, pile into the old Cierra, and head down town for the lighting of the Christmas Tree. We'd always be drawn to the Peanut Shop by the smell of roasting nuts. It's a tight fit in there but, that just made it all the more cozy. I remember the large glass shelves full of assorted nuts. I still can't get over the great selection. My mom would always buy Brazil nuts, my dad got the Pistachio's. My brother and sister liked Honey Roasted Peanuts and I loved the Cashews! My aunt always sends me their trail mix (the one with dried cranberries) and I stopped in the last time I was in town to get some myself. (There is a similar kind at Trader Joe's, but it's not quite the same.) It's a compact space, but there are so many options; I got a few other varieties in addition to the trail mix. I arrived just before closing (5:30pm) and they were locking the door, so they turned away another customer! I can understand trying to keep people from coming in at the last moment as I've worked in retail, but for a store in downtown Lansing I would think they want to get every sale possible. This place is as good as it gets in terms of nuts. More stores/businesses should follow their lead - figure out what you are good at and focus on it. I heard this downtown business needed support and went in person to buy a ton of holiday snacks. Then I got info and decided to send all my clients gifts local as well. With so many folks working from home I looked up addresses rather than ask my clients. One of the addresses was wrong and only the shipper can follow up with fed ex. Not only did the manager/owner never once thank me for over 800$ in orders she snarked at my friend who picked up a new box for the one wrong Addy I had in 12 orders for shipment. I love this place always have....it was great to take my Mother with dementia there as she always remembered it. But I am shocked as a small biz owner myself that I and my folks were not treated with kindness. The owner opted to give me a new box to ship myself rather than follow thru with fed ex. Maybe it's not covid to blame for this biz suffering... I now live in California and I miss The Peanut Shop greatly. One of my Christmas gift requests from my Dad was some wonderful nuts from the shop. I got burnt peanuts (one of my favorites) and cashews. YUMMY!!!! My Dad and I would stop in there a lot while I was growing up. Now when I go back to visit I always stop in. It is small but they pack every nut (and candy) you can think of inside. Friendly staff which is quick to help. If you ever visit Lansing this is a must stop. The Peanut Shop has been there, I think, my entire life. I remember it being a great place to go back in the 1960's. It was my brother, Jim's, favorite place on earth. Wherever he lived he always requested roasted peanuts in the shell from there. I think I sent him a ton! He's now gone, but this shop lives on. Ever time I go back to Lansing I stop in. Not just for the wonderful things they sell, but it's a way for me to remember him as well. I can't smell anymore due to injuries, but I remember how it wafted down the street. The people behind the counter are always nice and i like to joke with them and make them laugh. Great shop to stop in and go nuts! My best friend took me there a few years ago and love going back. Seems like the nuts get better every time. My favorites are the small redskin peanuts and the Cajun mixed nuts. WARNING!! The Peanut stop items are addictive. The employees have always been great! Reasonably priced! Top shelf quality nuts! When I was young my grandfather took me downtown every weekend. We had a ritual. Stop at his office in the Michigan National building, go to the bank, then hit Kwast (name may not be right) bakery, last was the Peanut Store. The minute you walk in the store it takes me back to my grandpa in his suit, trench coat, and slickers. Me in my Saturday whatever, putting finger prints all over the glass as I picked treats for me and my brother. I told him that years later, I'd be rolling him in there in his wheelchair. Unfortunately, time went by and I went away to school. So instead of the wheelchair, I made him a Children's book to recall the times we spent on Saturday's. To this day, if you were a regular, the family that runs the store remembers you from sight. That's something that's gone from retail these days, but it makes this place so special. Look forward to going in for Thanksgiving and picking up my boxes of peanuts that make great hostess gifts! If this place were to ever leave downtown, it would break my heart. It may not be "hip" and "cool," unless you understand that some places don't need to be defined. They define themselves by the years. This store has stayed through the many, many years of depression and turn over that downtown Lansing saw. That! Is "cool." read more
