In our case, it was alligator juniper with a slightly charred "live edge". I had done a LOT of price comparing, and the price for this was reasonable. We sanded, finished, and installed it ourselves. This humble slab of reclaimed wood is now the mantle over our fireplace and the focal point of the room!
