Went for Sunday lunch after visting for pub snacks in the past. A mixed bag on this occasion. The Parrot makes great play of the fact the fact that they have their own farm supplying pork and lamb. They seem to have a more than skin deep commitment to quality local produce. I'll get the negative out of the way, but read on because this place is worth a visit. My lamb (listed as slow-cooked) was two thin slices of the brown proverbially tough as old boots variety. It also had little flavour. My companions' pork was marginally better but not actually good. I understand that getting a roast right in a pub can be difficult, but it can be done so this was a real let down. All the locally sourced fresh ingredients in the world are for nowt if you don't cook it well. On the other hand, the vegetables accompanying were very good to excellent. We had a selection of roast pots, cabbage, kale, swede and carrot. All nicely cooked and bursting with flavour. Slightly crisper roughed up potatoes are my preference, but these were still pretty good. Portions were large, which would have been great if one didn't suspect this was to distract from the stingey meat portion. House red and freshly squeezed OJ both to be commended as was the service. On entering, the bar area was packed with walkers getting a drink. A waitress still had the presence of mind to spot us looking slightly lost and ushered us to our booked table. The rest of the service was efficient and more human than is sadly the norm in many places these days. Overall i would certainly return and hope to rate higher, but not on a sunday as there did not seem to be an alternative to roasts. read more
