Recommended this place by a friend who found it by mistake so went there for the first time today. It is a more "high end" pub in the way that one would need to do a booking as it gets busier in the evening. First, we went for a drink and sat outside which is lovely during a sunny day as it overlooks the river. After making a booking, took a walk down the footpath which is lovely (leads to a few sites and there's a piece of history written on posts after every few KM's or so). The food came in no time and service was good. The meals were big enough to finish (I don't like waste) and tasted good (as good as pub food can get). 2 meals and a drink each = £24 , not bad ! I would go back again and will recommend.

I was narrowboating on the Wey River this weekend and a wise local pointed us towards the Anchor. Am I ever glad they did, because it was fantastic. It's located right beside the Pyrford Lock and Pyrford Marina, making it a very popular stopping place for boaters. They obviously get a lot of land-based business as well, because they have two large car parks. The pub is very new, clean and spacious inside. There are a few dozen tables outside on the lawn right beside the river, and the entire place was very nearly full on the sunny Saturday afternoon that we were there. It's a friendly, fun atmosphere. The food's a bit on the pricey side for a pub (£10 for a pie, £9.25 for fish and chips) but everything we had was large, good quality, and excellent. My entire group of 7 boaters loved it all. Most had the fish and chips (with peas in a little bowl, for those who like food segregation). Two of us had the steak and ale pie, which was great. One person had the chicken and ham pie, which she reported to be also wonderful. My wife had the tuna nicoise salad (real grilled, not tinned, tuna). There are a few rarer options too, like slow-roasted pork ribs. The puddings looked absolutely amazing, but there was no way we could consider eating any more. Beers were really good, with a couple of Badger ales. The only bad point is that it's so popular, and gets so busy, that the queue for the bar to order drinks or food can be really long. There is a counter spot for food orders only that is sometimes open. Toilets were large and clean. A nice touch: the baskets of apples and pears with a card inviting you to take one of your five-a-day fruit/veg portions when you leave.

Lovely spot on the river, but the food was pretty average despite a promising menu. Most of the staff were young and too cool for school. Nice enough, but not memorable (unless you count paying £4 for a bottle of water!)

I will be open from the open. I live in Byfleet Village and I have been proud to have a traditional…read morepub here. I occasionally drink in the pub, grab a pint and then head out to the garden in the summer or off to a table in the winter. I went in last night with a couple of friends and was planning to spend only about enough time for two rounds. There were two women sitting on the table near to us who were chatting and waiting for their taxi to arrive. These were two normal looking women who looked like they had come from work. Their taxi arrived early and so the landlord spoke to the driver to ask him to come back in 20mins. I went to the bar to buy the second round and at this time the ladies left saying thanks to the landlord. As they disappeared out the door he commented to me "S!uts!". I was so shocked by what I thought was ironic humor that I laughed and commented that I was only thinking about the fact that on this rare occasion I had a £50 note in my wallet. He said bitterly "It will cost you more than that for one of them." - he was being serious! I ignored this strange outburst and returned to the table. I started talking to my girlfriend about comparing one of the beers we were drinking to the same brand we had just made at home. The landlord pricked up his ears and we got into a bit of banter. One of the other locals joined in and we had a laugh at the expense of CAMRA members. It was all very jovial and then the landlord flipped shouting at me for being rude and taking things too far. The other local looked at me and expressed surprise at this sudden turn. The landlord continued this tirade of verbal abuse for about a minute while he stormed up and down the bar moving glasses. Our side of the pub went dead quiet. We quickly finished up our drinks and headed off. As we were leaving the pub he sneered "Enjoy your bitter!" referring to the beer that we had made. As we got home, in a bit of a shock, I realised that I had seen this kind of interaction happen before at that pub. The last time I was in there with a different friend the landlord was hurling abuse at some customers who were leaving as we were coming in. At the time I assumed that the customers were out of order but perhaps this wasn't the case. So these three isolated incidents have convinced me that the landlord at present in February 2014 is dire enough that I do not wish to ever return to this place to spend my money. It's a shame as I had a large group of friends scheduled to come over to here for the next three Sundays and I would have liked to have taken them here - I will find another pub to go to now. My advice is to wait until the landlord gets replaced by anyone else. I like beer but I prefer for it not to be served with a shot of customer abuse.

One of those things I think that all Brits instinctively desire is a "nice country pub for Sunday…read moreLunch": this establishment in not-so-rural Surrey manages to tick all the boxes for me: - Plenty of parking - Plenty of tables in the garden (with a BBQ option) - Good food in generous portions - Good service They managed to score a quick bonus point with me virtually as soon as we sat down for lunch: the first thing the waitress did was offer "tap water" rather than trying to perpetrate the oh-so-irritating up-sell attempt for bottled water that has marred recent decades (for most of the UK perfectly drinkable stuff comes out of the tap: it wasn't that long ago most restaurants automatically put a jug of water on the table ...). So I'd definitely commend the Black Swan. UPDATE (Nov-11): After several visits, I'd now have to reduce Service from "Good" to "Generally Good" - there are unfortunately more than one member of staff who need some education about "Customer Focus" ...

A great kids menu too, with smaller portions of adult quality food. There's a definite relaxed bourgeois quality, if you are into that sort of thing. Dishes range between 9 and 15 pounds for lunch. I did have to sit in a chair that kept sinking back because it was half on brick and half on gravel, but the food and atmosphere made up for it.
