Visiting from out of town and stumbled upon this pub smack in the middle of a residential street. Good vibes, good beer, great staff.

Such a fun spot. I had heard a lot about The Plough and wanted to see it for myself. Even though I had come in on a slow night I was still treated better than I had ever been in any American pub. Plus it's on the Peep Show tour path in Croydon so had to make the special pilgrimage. Highly recommended!

After being here for four weeks, we stopped in yesterday afternoon to make it happen. I ordered the chicken/pork mix and my husband went with the beef. Each main came with sides of cooked veggies, Yorkshire pudding, golden roasties, all covered in a house-made gravy. Our portions were generous and the gravy, for me, was the highlight; the combination of the potato chunks dipped into the gravy, letting it soak into them, was divine! These two dishes, plus a beer for my husband, came to £26 total. The vibe was casual, with patrons just hanging out at tables, spread out throughout the place. There is a back patio, but we felt it was a bit chilly to dine outside, so we went with an indoor high table in-between the bar and one of the windows facing out front. We truly felt like we got a taste of a typical Sunday afternoon at the local pub. Note: We ordered and paid at the same time up at the bar.

Within the first three minutes of sitting down, three different servers came over to ask about drinks. Shortly after our drinks arrived, two more came to check if we were ready to order food. When we said we wanted a bit more time, we were reminded that there was a two-hour time limit on the table, which felt unnecessary since we had only just arrived. With about 23 minutes still left in our booking window, plates were already being cleared and the bill was brought over, which made the end of the meal feel rushed. We ordered the Sunday roast whole chicken to share. It came with green beans, roasted potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, mashed carrots, and two small pots of what seemed to be parsnip purée. The chicken itself was a bit dry, and the purée is a bit confusing. Overall, the experience felt more rushed than enjoyable, which was a shame as we were hoping for a relaxed pub lunch.

You check in upstairs and you go downstairs with your table number for seating. It's nicely decorated in lights for the holidays. Food is amazing! It's elevated traditional English food. We ordered Sunday Roast (because it's Sunday), Pork belly and their Sea bream. Roast beef was cooked to perfection. Their sauce is delicious and their horseradish paired perfectly. Their pork belly was really good, especially with their crispy crackling, really made the dish. the Sea bream was also good with their crispy skin and buttery lemon sauce. You need to get their apple crumble for dessert, it was so deliciously yummy! Crunchy, creamy, salty and sweet, it was perfection and perfect way to end an already scrumptious dinner. This is the second time we've been here since we've visited London, and it won't be the last!

According to the sign outside the Sandrock is once again under new management and it looked as if it has had a recent makeover (well, apart from the toilets which are still very old school). There is a comfy bar area at the front of the pub with a large, attractive dining area at the back. We arrived at 12 noon and we had the place to ourselves. Greene King IPA and Old Speckled Hen were the two cask ale choices; not very exciting but the IPA was crisp, cold and clear which was just what was needed after the morning hike. We grabbed a menu and took our beer to the garden area which is very nicely laid out and tastefully furnished; it also has a great spot for smokers. I would imagine you could spend many a happy afternoon here during the summer months. The Sandrock seems to putting a lot of thought into its food offering and the menu looked very appealing without straying too far into gastro territory. Probably due to the heat, another 27 degree day, we went down the snackage route and shared some very tasty chicken and chorizo skewers, a sausage sandwich and a bowl of beautifully cooked chips. Mighty fine walking fodder at a reasonable price, served by friendly and efficient staff. No doubt if we lived in this area we would be regular customers at the Sandrock and I think this would be a good spot for an evening meal.
