Although there are several pubs in the area, this end of Sidcup lacks a casual bar where one can meet a friend for a pint or glass of wine in a relaxed atmosphere. The Hackney Carriage has an industrial feel with exposed pipes and light fixings. The wall above the window and door is covered in beer mats and the interior walls are fixed with various beer and ale pump signs which is interesting to look at! There is a great selection of beer and cider in caskets and boxes and only one or two on tap from what I remember. There is also a selection of wine and spirits but the emphasis is on the beer and cider lover! At only £2 per half-pint and £4 per pint, this place serves a great opportunity to try some new beers!

It was my first visit just before Christmas and my friends and I received a warm welcome. The wine list is extensive, with wine from all over the world and various regions. The prices were reasonable and so it was a great opportunity to try new wines that I hadn't had before. The interior was rustic and trendy and there was plenty of seating. The bar was quite quiet when we visited and it was a Friday night. I just hope the bar keeps getting regular custom to keep it open! The wine list is massive, and you can indeed order loads of them by the glass. The choice of food isn't huge, but what they do, they do well. You could happily spend hours in Mr Lawrence, and I'm sure I'll have plenty of opportunities in the future to do just that.

Initially we had a server that was available for the outdoor areas, but service was inside only during/after the typical dinner rush (it was around 6 or 7pm). I imagine it is a fun place to meet up with friends after work or weekends. The layout was cute, everything was clean, and the staff gave great recommendations. French wine bar, Le Bouchon, has recently opened in Blackheath, replacing the past it's sell-by…read moredate Curry Garden restaurant. Apart from the shape of the room, you'd be hard pressed to notice any similarities as the new management have done a complete re-fit. It looks and feels exactly like you'd expect from a European wine bar, with exposed bricks, wooden tables and a chalk board showing the current specials. On the warm Friday evening we visited, the bar was busy with South East London locals keen to try out the new offering, but not to the point where we couldn't get a table. They also had a couple of outside tables, meaning even smokers can enjoy a glass of wine without having to step outside. Service was on the slow side, with our water and bread, olive oil and toasted almonds being brought out almost immediately, followed by a 5 minute wait for the bottle of wine. The waiter was apologetic, and the owner did admit they needed to improve their service speed, so I'm sure it won't be an on-going problem. They have an extensive wine list, with mostly French offerings, along with a few other international selections. Being French there's no choice of glass sizes, it's either a 175ml glass, 500ml carafe or a full bottle. Prices were on the higher side (starting at £18 for the cheapest bottles and quickly escalating as you progress down the list), but I think it's a reflection on the quality. The £31 bottle of sauvignon/chardonnay blend we had was excellent. We didn't try the food apart from the bread, which was good and according to the menu, is from the French bakery next door. There were set meat and cheese platters available, or you could go "a la carte" and make your own selection. I'm not particularly a wine bar person, instead preferring a beer at the pub, but Le Bouchon is somewhere I'll definitely return.

On the night we visited, the door staff were working hard to politely keep out people wearing trainers or dressed too informally, but anyone in smart casual wear was welcome. The clientelle was a mix of ages, but mainly groups of women and couples. They have a garden area at the back, which should be nice in the summer, and a cocktail bar upstairs, which was very quiet when we had a look. Definately worth a try if you fancy a few glasses of wine or a cocktail in South London.

A night out in Blackheath wouldn't be complete without a trip to Mordens. As the only (I think!)…read morelate night hot spot in the village, it's also most likely your only choice. After hours, they open up the downstairs, bring in a dj, and let the dancing go in full swing. Prior to that, you'll probably be upstairs with a nice crowd of people having wine or cocktails. Beer in bottles if you must, but beware the choices are a bit limited - it is a wine bar after all! And compared to central London, wow it's cheap. It's a fun place, and probably a bit of debauchery might ensue, but you'll have fun at Mordens. While still pretty close to central London, it's certainly a different feel - and you'll probably be surrounded by English people!
