Getting in a little late to go to London, we turned our attention to something close to the Gatwick airport. After finally sorting our Uber rides, we were off to The Farmhouse. First impressions were of a traditional British pub experience, which was a good start. Our clumsiness of grabbing a table and figuring out whether we needed to go to the bar to order or wait to be served, surely gave us away as "not locals." Our server was friendly and provided us with our menus and took our drinks order. The one shortfall was that the menu had a number of items not available and with an assist from a customer, two of us needed a rethink on their meal. In all, it was 4 Fish & Chips, One Farmhouse Burger, and a Battered Halloumi burger, plus an order of calamari, and 4 tomato and garlic soups. There were zero plates taken off the table that were not empty! I had the Halloumi burger, which had a great, crispy batter topped with some guacamole mayo with a red sauce on the side. Really good. Then we doubled down and hit the dessert menu! Two warm chocolate brownies with salted caramel ice cream and four plum tarts. We asked for some custard on the side because who doesn't like custard?! Save for the debate about whether it was more a pie than a tart, another set of empty plates were the only evidence left. Would definitely recommend The Farmhouse!

I got the bangers and mash while by wife got the cottage pie. I think I got the better meal as the sausages were really tasty and the whole grain mustard in the potatoes was a great way to elevate the potatoes. Her cottage pie was fine but didn't have a ton of flavor. Food came out surprisingly quickly, but we also had an order of chips which was crazy slow to come out of the kitchen. The chips were quite good but we'd both finished our entire meals and most of our beers by the time we got them. Beer options were solid, some good German choices. Beer was cheap too.

Though it is located just a short walk from the many attractions of Brick Lane, The Carpenters Arms…read moreretains a very local feel. This place is not trying to play up on an image like many of the bars in this areas and sticks instead to the important business of being a damn fine pub. Being quite small there is a naturally cosy feel to the place and this is complimented by the decor wuth lots of wood panelling and comfy seats. The bar has a great selection of draft and bottled beers and, for the summer months, there is an excellent beer garden. I've yet to try the food but they do serve traditional pub grub between 12 and 5 Tuesday through Sunday. With a great atmosphere, warm and friendly bar staff and an excellent range of drinks, The Carpenters Arms is a brilliant place for a relaxing evening or a great stop-in after a hard days shop.

Luckily we found some stool seating by the front and were able to enjoy some beers and take in the ambiance. There's an upstairs that is accessible by a very very narrow staircase which even has handles for support, all part of the fun lol!! Beer: We tried out the Guinness (great pouring process!), peroni, and a local ale which the bartender allowed me to sample. He was very helpful and walked me through the different ciders they had in stock and even how you could add fruit syrups to sweeten the flavor. What makes this place even more memorable was the helpfulness of the young guy bartending. He helped us plan how to get to Gatwick airport extremely early the next morning and we owe him a big one!

They closed the bar while we were there but said there was no rush to leave while they were cleaning and closing up for the night. The lunch we had the day before was very good pub food. Hot chips were awesome and then chicken tenders cooked perfectly. Wasn't noisy as we were almost the first there for lunch and the last to get there before closing the next night so overall the place was very quiet.

If you're looking for a good pub, it doesn't get much better than this…read more Lovingly called simply "The Axe" by locals, this pub is in a different league to most other rural pubs. I'll explain why and try to be concise. The cuisine is exceptional. There's a good selection of quality drinks. The service is excellent. The atmosphere is always friendly and welcoming -- the sort of place where complete strangers tend to strike-up conversation. The location is perfect, overlooking the Village Green, with a big beer garden behind, and a vast playing field behind that. It's a lovely village, nestled in the gently-undulating farming landscape of rural north-east Herts -- no wonder Braughing was recently awarded the prestigious "Village of the Year" accolade. The pub's menu always includes the best of local produce, from locally-reared beef to local pork sausages, alongside popular country pub dishes. (Braughing village is famous for, among other things, the delicious local sausages, and this is a good place to sample them.) Did I mention the pies? A different pie every day it seems, and you won't find better pies than these. I don't make a statement like that lightly.

I spied The Inn on the Pond using a well-known search tool when I fancied a relaxing Sunday drive…read morein the country with an old pal. Booking a table an hour or two before through the website was a breeze. When we hit traffic in the godforsaken Croydon area, I phone them. Yes of course the booking could be delayed. This is the kind of lovely pub which has a bowl of water outside for dogs and a nice little pile of muddy wellies at the door. The restaurant part is in the back, a slightly dingy room, with no views over the pond sadly. Also quite noisy on a Sunday thanks to assorted children. The Sunday menu offers some delicious sounding dishes. Being in vege mode, it was an easy choice to get the couscous stuffed peppers with halloumi. My companion plumped for a hearty pie. My stuffed peppers were delicious and fresh tasting, while the pie disappeared without trace as we enjoyed our conversation. We followed it up with a lemon verbena crème brulee and a dark cherry and almond tart. The crème brulee was a delicate masterpiece, while the tart was good fayre but a slight heavy on the pastry. Prices are a little higher than I expected outside London, but good value for the quality and service. The management must be good because all the staff we interacted with were pleasant. The staff all seemed to be enjoying their work so seemed like a great team. There's nice walking directly from the pub. I imagine it will be very pleasant in summer, and I hope I get a chance to return.

Edit 21st June 2008: Downgrading this to 1 star after…read moreanother visit to The Inn at the Pond resulted in a fetid-smelling and tasting burger being served. After a really good first meal (I'm leaving my original meal in for fairness), this meal was a massive let down. We found ourselves entering the restaurant wondering why there were so few people in it for a Saturday lunchtime and left wondering how they were still open, with a sample of food taken to provide to Environmental Health. Service was terrible: after waiting at the entrance for a couple of minutes, we had to wander around the (mostly empty) restaurant to see ourselves to a table, despite the fact that the waitress has clocked our arrival and said 'hello'. Drinks, which you'd think they'd be pushing hard, given the massive mark up, were really slow in being offered and topped up. The food (the edible element) was average. Nothing special, particularly considering the premium prices being charged. If you're silly enough to visit, please don't ask for the burger. For one thing, the texture is all wrong - it's obviously been over-mixed (almost certainly by machine) and the burger my wife tasted and smelt foul. When we complained, the management claimed (without smelling our burger) that the smell was due to the addition of cumin and herbs. So, first off, the smell of the burger served was definitely not just cumin. Secondly, any chef who puts anything but beef, salt and pepper (and, at a push, onion) into a burger better know they're doing. The chefs at The Inn at the Pond don't. I don't know what's happened since our first visit, but I'm really disappointed that this place hasn't lived up to its potential. It's not even average at the moment. Avoid, avoid, avoid. Original review: The Inn on the Pond's recently been refurbished, and our visit happened to be three days after opening. The Inn's decor and furniture has a lovely warm feel to it, and the management have done well not to be tempted into the trap of going for a retro-rustic feel. The food is posh pub grub (I wouldn't call this a gastro-pub). Between us we ordered the minute steak ciabatta, the honey roast ham and cheddar baguette, and the thai-spiced fishcakes. All the dishes were excellent, with my fishcakes giving enough of a kick to be noticeable without drowning out any of the other flavours. The chips that accompanied the sandwiches were nicely crunchy on the outside. I'd have preferred them in a thicker cut but to be fair to The Inn they do advertise them as 'frites'. Service was attentive and relaxed (in a good way), and the staff were very friendly towards my 16 month old daughter. I'm not sure the layout of the restaurant will cope with too many young families, but the lack of a children's menu and high chairs probably shows that The Inn on the Pond isn't really geared towards that part of the market. (Luckily for me, my daughter is quite happy eating normal food that hasn't been dumbed down for children.) The Inn's currently in a 'soft launch' period -- as The Inn's website puts it, so we do not do a 'Terminal 5' -- and the menu on offer to us was supposedly limited. Personally, I think it was about the right length, and I'll be interested to see how they cope with the extensive menu currently being touted on their website. Recommended, although I hope this place doesn't become too popular, since it's my local and I'd like to be able to get in without too much trouble.
