I do not even know where to begin . . . My girlfriend and I had been together for nearly 8 years when an opportunity arose to plan a surprise proposal for her in Paris. A study abroad trip led me to England and the planning began. I had long since decided to propose, but was at a loss as to how or when; now I had the perfect timing and location at my disposal. I began searching for a photographer to help capture my surprise proposal in Paris. I found Fran from The Paris Photographer and Kiss me in Paris and he fit my needs perfectly! We worked together for nearly a year on scheduling, locations, time, story, etc. etc. Fran's input was invaluable and helped me visualize everything I wanted even though I was half a world away. He took time to get to know my girlfriend and I through stories I'd share and examples of images I'd give him that appealed to us.
I knew I couldn't make the photo shoot a surprise, so I did have to tell her about that. I was able to hide it as a "couples shoot" since we do not have many pictures of us together. Since it would be our first time abroad together, it was the perfect disguise for the surprise I had planned. Once I got her on board with the photo shoot, I had to do a lot of "veering" to get her thrown off the trail of a possible proposal. We went ring shopping and she chose a ring that was very expensive, so she thought I'd have to save for it. I'm in law school, so I told her I'd have to wait to propose until after I graduated and took the Bar exam. Every time something came up that made her suspicious, I was able to divert her. All the while, Fran and I were talking regularly about ideas and different plans.
When we arrived in Paris, I was excited and somewhat nervous. I had her ring with me in my backpack and never knew if she'd go looking through it to find a charger or something else and find the ring. Our first night in Paris we went to the Eiffel Tower and I wanted to propose then and there with the sparkling lights flashing and the Champs de Mars quiet, but I refrained: I'd come too far and planned to much with Fran to ruin it now. We were in Paris for a full three days before our photo shoot, so you can imagine the stress I was under.
Finally the day had come!! We got dressed and while she was putting her makeup on, I was able to transfer to the ring to my suit jacket pocket without her noticing. As we walked to Trocadero for our shoot to begin, I was afraid she'd notice the bulge in my jacket and ask about it, but she never did. We hiked up the steps and across the street to a little café where we met Fran for the first time. It was early in the morning, before the sun was up (though it was lit fairly well), and he was bursting with energy and enthusiasm. We headed back over to the steps of Trocadero to begin.
Everything was a whirlwind that day. We booked four hours because I knew it was going to actually be an engagement shoot, but the time flew by! From Trocadero, to the Seine, to a café, to a walking bridge, to the Louvre outer gardens, to within the Louvre itself, we were able to capture beautiful images of the two of us from a day neither of us will ever forget. From some shots before the proposal, to catching the very moment she realized what was happening (as I clumsily knelt to "tie" my already tied shoe), to intimate moments, and moments of silly fun, Fran got it all.
As two shy introverts, Fran was perfect! He was energetic and fun! He never let the conversation lack, gave great pointers on posing, showed us the images that came out amazing before moving on, and he'd work through the location and the surroundings as he went like a true professional. We were so impressed with him personally and his images that there has been talk of flying him to the United States for our wedding whenever we decide on a date.
If you are ever in Paris, or just need an amazing photographer wherever you are in the world, I strongly suggest you turn to Fran to capture your memories. read more
