Two Italian tourists were just annoyed at me using Google Translate to try and chat with them. No warning. No communication. Barred. There is a lovely ornate bar serving standard Glasgow drinks. Unfortunately the Erdinger draught had run out, but the Budvar on tap was lovely. Given that the beer selection isn't great I'd never plan to visit the place on its own, but added to a visit to Mulberry Street and the Allison Arms it's well worth popping in.

Live music, good friendly atmosphere and a strong neighbourhood vibe meant we felt right a home instantly. For a pub that's a little on the blokey side I was heartened that at least the ladies loos were something good to write home about. The drink selection for such a small place was very decent too. The evening felt very uorganised, and although, little of this is down to Sweeney's, the staff were of little help. We arrived early. The decor is eclectic, the pub definitely has a personal touch. I really liked the musical and instrument motifs by the stage area. There's also some quirky signs by the bar. Although, it did all a bit funky and mismatched to me. When we walked in, instruments in hand, we made our way from one half of the bar to the other; one which has the stage. Although the bar staff in the first room had explained we'd to head through to the second, nobody welcomed us or explained what would be happening when we got there. Other than a heckle from some folks at a table and a 'What will you be playing for us?!', we were left to it. We took a seat and, noticing no other instrument-in-hand folks, wandered exactly what the plan was. So we ordered drinks, and then I introduced myself and the band. At this point, more musicians were in the bar. Phew! The barman explained that the person who runs the night was running late. Understandably not their fault, what could they do? But then time went on and on. And there was no update from the bar. We just waited and waited. We'd presumed we were first since it had been listed that way without a mention of running times but after waiting till after the night should have begun (when the organiser finally arrived), we found out we were second. By this point, we just wanted to play; play and go home. In addition, the monitor mix wasn't great and the organiser had mistakenly thought there was two of us, so Sweeney's only paid two of us for performing. The general feeling was that there's venues out there doing amazing things for local music. The best and memorable gigs for us have had great hosts behind them. We just didn't feel this way about Sweeney's, and that's a pity.

Mulberry Street is a bar/restaurant that's doggie friendly, sells up to three real ales (usually Harviestoun and Fyne Ales), serves food and has a pretty big outdoor seating area. The beers are always well kept and this is shown by the yearly entries in the Good Beer Guide that Mulberry Street enjoys. The food is really good and not that expensive too, with Sunday brunch being the highlight with all dishes being served with a pot of tea or speciality coffee. They also have a quiz on Monday nights which is free to enter. The staff are really friendly and efficient too. It tends to get pretty busy on a weekend and in the evenings, and if it's a sunny day you'll need to turn up early to get a prime seat at one of the bistro style outdoor tables to watch Strathbungo life go by! Other establishments in the area may be more hyped, but they can't beat Mulberry Street's dedication over the years to this once obscure area of the Southside.

Staff at the bar were really friendly and chatty and I was impressed with the range of drinks. I opted for Strongbow on tap, and there was also West beers available. A round of 4 drinks was just over £10 so not too pricey either. Only downside was that they don't do cocktails but it is a pretty small bar so I guess they can't do everything! I'd definitely head back to check out the food after this visit.

The brunch menu is pretty standard - full breakfast, veggie option, pancake stack or eggs florentine/benedict. They have gluten free options as well which was good to see. Food didn't take long to arrive and the veggie breakfast was good - nothing ground breaking, but a good selection for £8.95. Most interesting was the falafel which was really nice. The menu said there was a rosti but I didn't seem to get that which I only just realised writing this review! The bun stayed together, the juicy burger stayed together, and the meat was of good quality and nicely seasoned. What more can you ask for from a patty? The skinny fries were as good as any too. So why is it not five stars? Well, a couple of other people commented their burger was a little too dry, so taking that into account a four.

So I opted for the Haggis Balls to kick off this food night. The starter was absolutely delicious, the sauce wasn't too hot and with a pleasant amount of sweetness to compliment my balls. Oh yeah! OK, so they were actually "fritters". I felt some of the menu for me was a bit on the spicy side so opted for the vegetarian dish of Cuban black bean and rice with fried plantain and sweet potatoes. I have to say it was very different but quite palatable. It was lovely décor and the staff could not be any more helpful, they were very accommodating and polite. To start we had Accra and Popcorn Prawns, the prawns were nice and came with a tasty sauce but the Accra was the definite winner for the starter. For our mains we had Jerk Pit Fish of the Day and Jerk Pit Pork belly, both came with corn on the cob and rice and peas. The jerk seasoning was great, and had a good heat to it, as you would expect. The rice was well cooked and well seasoned and the fish tender and flakey. I could have done with an extra corn on the cob - that dipped in their hot sauce was a highlight for the veggie lover in me. Not eating meat personally, I never tried the pork belly, however I was told it was delicious. It's not far from a top rating for me (I'd give it 4 and a half if I could), the only downfalls I found were the atmosphere little a lacking, probably down to the time of day we visited, between lunch and dinner. I think it would be a great evening trip. I found the material of the plates a little distracting, it felt a little like eating off of paper plates. Hard drinking and hard rocking (all of the most played songs on the jukebox are by AC/DC), Strathies is not a place for the faint-hearted but equally it's not as scary as it may seem at first. Despite its rough exterior, the Southside establishment offers all the simple things you could really ask of a bar; football on TV, jukebox, cheap drink, pool table and darts board. It's actually rather welcoming in a "do what your told, and we'll leave you alone" type way. While I can't say I'll be frequenting here often, give me this sort of bar over the sterile style bars of the West End any day. Rock on, I say (although I'd probably be barred if I uttered these words in the place).

To be fair I'll say Strathies was not for us but it may suit those with different requirement of a local watering hole . Those who appreciate the musical genius of ACDC and prefer the band to be blasted at an ear bleeding decibel level. Those who like their clientele more than a little "rough around the edges" (and I don't just throw that phrase around. I'm from Clydebank). Those who would choose to down their Tennents in a pub with decor that can, at best, be described as "rustic" at worst "a dump." Those people would love Strathies.
