Painted Otter was recommended by two neighbors to refinish our 1899 claw foot tub. We phoned them last week and got an estimate based on photographs I texted to Nathan, the owner. Nathan gave us a price range that varied, based on how much filling-in our badly worn tub would need. [$50-$150 over the base price-we ended up being charged just the $50 minimum]. The work was done this Monday. It took less than four hours and the tub looks WONDERFUL. There was a strong odor during the process, but it dissipated by the next day, mostly after I removed the protective paper near the tub 24 hours after the job was finished. [the worker removed most of the paper and cleaned up quite thoroughly, but couldn't disturb the paper adjacent to the tub as that might touch and damage the wet finish]. Nathan gave us a quote of $2,200 to reglaze our tub and tile around it. For the next 5 days he didn't return our calls requesting clarification on tile color. When he did call, it was 5:30pm the night before he was supposed to arrive to do the work. He said he miscalculated and "should be charging $2,900 for the job" but would be willing to break even at $2,500. Then he said "unless you want to hold me to my $2,200 quote. If you're those kind of people that are willing to let me lose money, then we can do that." Nathan contacted me immediately after I posted a review to Google. I guess Yelp (the first review) hadn't caught his attention. Long story short: he'd send the original guy to re-do the tub with epoxy, at his expense. Condition: remove my "scathing" reviews. I agreed, but only when I could run my hand along the surface after the finish had dried. He accepted. But after the work was done and before it dried I received numerous text messages from him asking for removal of the reviews, and stating he'd never received more than one text message from me and no email. I said I'd sent 5 texts and one email. His final communication to me was he'd refund the entire cost if I removed the reviews. There were no more texts after that because I blocked his number. I don't need $575 from him. I just needed a good job. This time, the tub is smooth and there's a nice sheen to it. Definitely worth $575. It's much better than the sanded-down, automobile-waxed, matt-finished disastrous "fix" that caused me to complain. read more

The Painted Otter did a great job on my tub refinishing. This is definitely a case of "you get what you pay for" - It wasn't the cheapest estimate we got but they mentioned things that other companies didn't, which we took as a sign of their attention to detail. I'm so glad we didn't decide to cut corners. They brought A-1 ventilation equipment - there were almost no fumes during the process. Their work was meticulous - correcting previous work (by others) and making everything right. They explained what they were doing at every step - a nice touch that most people don't bother with. They arrived on time, finished early and were friendly and professional. I'm also an over-protective cat owner, so Jessica & Nathan's patience with my questions about effects on pets was greatly appreciated. Painted Otter went WAY above and beyond what I was expecting out of my old tub (the tub is over 50 years)There was rust from dripping water faucets and a rusted out excess drain cover. The tub had at least 5 layers of old paint with pink feet, I wish I had taken a before picture just to show what they did. The after was a beautiful old black and white claw foot tub. They used their own ventilation equipment. I have 2 children so I was concerned about the fumes, we were downstairs sometimes or on the porch and when I would come in I didn't smell any fumes. They did run the ventilation system through our window but I don't have stains. The quote they gave me was 775 plus 75 for mileage (they drove over 2 hours to get to my house) so it was 850 altogether and even then it was cheaper than getting a new claw foot tub (over 1,000) Nathan and his partner were OUTSTANDING!! Extremely professional and came down to let me know what was going on, where they were process wise. I would recommend them to anyone in a heart beat. Thank you! read more

While they were not able to actually work on our bathtub for reasons out of their control (details below), Jessica was professional and courteous as we worked to get approval from our strict co-op management company. On the day of the job, they arrived right on time, were very friendly and professional, and above all, extremely honest in explaining to me in detail the reasons why they could not proceed with the job, as the wall behind our tiles was deteriorating and needed to be fixed before it could be refinished. They proceeded to give me advice on how to proceed from there, with useful ideas on renovation, even though they would not be doing the job themselves. Just had our bathtub refinished in hackensack and they did a perfect job. Totally professional, friendly, and absolutely no sign of of debris or dust. I would NOT recommend calling them. First I was assured that the odor would not be bad at all and in fact I couldn't be in my house for about 3 days due to the extremely strong odor that was throughout my entire house despite them using an "exhaust fan"! Next when I finally was able to see the final product it had drips, and cracks, and it was overall of horrible quality. They also broke my drain by allowing whatever they were using to run down it and I had to pay $400 to have the entire drain and piping replaced! STAY FAR FAR AWAY from the Painted Otter Refinishers would be my advice to anyone! So after paying $800 to have my tub refinished I have to hire another company to do it properly because I will not let them near my bathroom ever again! read more

Horrible job! There are large "drips" and pock marks in the tub. When I called to complain and ask that they come up to see for themselves what I was talking about, they made excuses and cashed my check. Even the woman who was cleaning the place said it was a horrible job and I should get my money back. I've seen much better jobs, but not by this company. Look elsewhere. Apparently my review didn't make into Yelp the first go-round. Here it is again: in October 2011, I hired Painted Otter to refinish my tub enclosure. Nathan and his colleague were very affable at first, until their first blunder, then oops, all the false pleasantness vanished. First, they removed the fixtures and replaced them in a way that the hot couldn't turn off, then claimed it was not their doing and I'd have to get it fixed at my own expense. At my insistence they agreed to go behind the tub wall and fix their mistake. I went to the kitchen next morning to find a ceiling full of water dripping onto the floor. When I called them they denied that they had anything to do with it , claiming that they had not gone behind the the fixture wall. At my insistence they returned to clean up the mess, then tried to charge me for the extra work. Here's why am taking the time to review their operation 18 months after the fact: Their demeanor was so warm and fuzzy--until the first glitch. From then on, I had to fight to get what I thought was a hassle-free job done, and was treated to sulks and drama when things started to go awry. Just watch out, keep a photographic record, examine the contract carefully, and don't count on going on a holiday while the work is being done. read more

I have used many contractors SAVE your money and go with the cheaper company. Nathan will convince u that the process, simple and clean. NO WAY! In fact anyone interested can free to email me. I have pictures of the entire experience. 1.) I was never informed that I would be their employee. You are responsible to to put all your bathroom fixtures back on and apply caulk/silicone.WHAT??? NO ONE not Nathan or Vic that I was going to be part of a DIY I am disabled!! 2.) There were dirty rubber gloves and tape tightly secured on remaining fixtures. I CANT GET OFF!! 3.) PAPER is TAPED to BRAND NEW INSTALLED wall paper and paper. WHo taught u people how to prep a workplace? I have many pictures of what was left behind. NOw I have to secure a plumber. Yes, for 24 hrs you can't use the bathroom, but with NO bathroom features YOU can't use the bathroom at all. 4.) If u know your product is slippery and causes people to fall, then why are you charging me 50 extra to address the problem. 5.) THE SMELL & there old dryer vent does not help remove the odor. Definite allergy and aasthma attack.6.)I have received NO response to my email sent to their website or phone call. There are drips and pin holes on tub where paint was suppose to cover. There are many competitors out there for less money who do a complete clean up. I went with this company because Nathan made it clear, no worries and no work on my part.
