We had fantastic paella and a great time with Daniel, the Paella King. He is not closed, but I think there has been some confusion (personnel changes and/or other things). We had two paella, mixta, and black. I loved them both. The squid was soooo tender and flavorful. The black was a beautiful dish. The mixta was full of wonderful ingredients in addition to the flavorful rice - chicken, shrimp, sausage, clams, mussels, artichokes, peas - and all components cooked perfectly. Even the rice had a lovely socarrat. I made the appetizers, salads, and desserts to complete the meal. Focusing on his cooking, Daniel made a fantastic paella and chatted with our guests, answering questions as he went. We did a garage-to-garage dinner for my birthday this week (Think farm-to-table adapted to covid times). It's so great that some folks are adaptive and nimble in these most difficult times to find ways to keep their businesses going during the pandemic. With few catering orders, these guys have gone to serving yummy weekly take out paella meals from their home. This was our second time ordering from them. Before, they had two big pots going, one with seafood and the other chicken. This time around, there was only the traditional seafood version. For my wife who has shellfish sensitivity, they made one serving minus the shellfish. Unfortunately, this meant what remained was mostly rice. Everything still tasted great and I love supporting small businesses but I hope they go back to offering two separate versions that each have all of the good stuff included. read more

As Ash would say, "Hail to the King, baby." So we were having a party to celebrate my ex-fiancée (some people call it a wedding, whatevs) and needed to feed a small band of drunks and whatnot. A friend recommended the Paella King based on her experience at a previous party. I've had paella in restaurants before, but this was something magical. He came to our location set up and got to work with about 25 pounds of rice, prawns, chicken, chorizo, clams, mussels, and other fruits of the sea, plus some saffron and other spices. There was constantly a crowd of onlookers as he worked his magic. The dish looked amazing and tasted even better. And yes, there was a ton of food left. The King served each of the guests, then quietly broke down his equipment and seemingly disappeared. Paella is a dish best served huge! Oh, Mercy! I partook in some lovely, lovely paella this last weekend, via the Paella King, and let me tell you.. this is some seriously good stuff! I had my first paella experience a few years back in Barcelona and I remember it being quite good. This last weekend was my second time with the dish, and lemme tell ya, this guy definitely knows what he's doing! For 10 years, the Paella King has been heading out to houses, businesses, and events, wowing people with his crazy skills! The whole thing is quite entertaining and fun, and the presentation and end result are gorgeous! The end result: A medley of perfectly seasoned rice, vegetables, giant prawns, chorizo, mussels, and chicken. The chicken was probably my favorite, as it was tender and juicy, and very flavorful. The King is a lovely miracle working gentleman who's chatty and fun, and his 'set up and break down' is faster than a knock off purse hawker in NYC. He's that quick! I'd definitely recommend him to anyone looking to 'spice' up a birthday, reunion, or special occasion. It'll definitely do the trick! He feeds his hungry servants well for their loyalty and he chooses all the finest animals from his land - the prawns from his ocean, chicken from his chickens and chorizo from his, uh, chorizo animals. All hail the Paella King! Watching him work his magic in making the paella is truly a delight. It was like a colorful piece of art as he meticulously arranges the chicken, mussels, and other goodies in the big pan. He is a very friendly guy and can chat with you while he cooks and explains on what he is doing. I've never had paella before but I can tell you that it was deeee-licious. He knows how to save all the juices and cook them into the paella for the flavor. I highly recommend him for big parties...like 20+ people. Did I also mention that he is a ninja in disguise? Hiring Jim the Paella King for our small dinner party was the BEST decision we could have made. GOD HOW I WISH HE WOULD MOVE TO LOS ANGELES (where I live!) Last September (2013) my husband and I wanted to do something special for our visit to my in-laws on Mercer Island, for their wedding anniversary. I started researching personal chefs for a dinner at home, but it was too expensive. Eventually I came across the Paella King here on Yelp. I immediately fell in love with the idea (and the price - much more reasonable), and the finished product was even better than I imagined. Jim was so personable from the very first e-mail, and his policy of speaking to everyone on the phone before the event made me feel even more confident that he was going to provide a very feel-good and spectacular meal. I also spoke to "the Paella Queen", Jim's wife on a couple of occasions when I had questions. Very sweet woman. Jim obtains all his seafood locally and based on how his paella tasted (we got the mixed) it was SO FRESH. Other ingredients are sourced from other places for authenticity. He arrived promptly, in his "Paella King" van, swiftly scoped out a spot outside and begin setting up to cook. You can tell he loves what he does - he was focused when necessary but most of the time he was happily chatting with any of the family or guests that came by to have a look at the progress. It's so neat to watch him cook, and I stayed close by the entire time. He happily explained his process, discussed where he got his seafood and meats, and just generally being pleasant and jovial. Many guests enjoyed hovering around and sipping their drinks while seeing the magic happen. When it was ready, he politely served everyone the paella himself to make sure everyone got bits of everything. As we were enjoying this feast, he packed up, said a warm goodbye and was off! We ended up with a smaller party than he normal caters to, which worked out GREAT because it meant we had leftovers for the family for a couple of days. I ate so much paella and was left wanting more. He also provided a salad which was similarly fresh and delicious. Next time I want to get tapas and have him play some flamenco guitar. Oh. My. God. A friend engaged the Paella King for one of her landmark birthdays. He made a paella mixta (check his website for an explanation) which was beyond wonderful. It had incredible depth of flavor, great mouth-feel (not too heavy, not too light) and a nice lightly carmelized crust on the bottom. He pays attention to how it looks as well as how it tastes: the ingredients were arranged most artistically. And what ingredients they were. His website explains how he sources the ingredients, I will merely say that you could taste this care in the final product. He set up his burner and paella pan on the balcony and was happy to interact with partygoers. He explained that the crust is called the "socorrat" and also told us that some places skimp on the saffron because it gets lost in all the other flavors. He didn't skimp, and it didn't get lost. I've never had paella which wasn't wonderful, but this goes to the front of the line. read more

What a great experience I had with Jim the "Paella King"! It was fun planning the type of specialty Paella we had and when the day of the event came he showed up and set up his station with his HUGE pan.It was fun for my guests to watch him work and learn about how he does his magic. The Pallea was as good or better as any I've had in Spain with plenty of saffron, home made broth, crispy under-crust, mussels, squid, shrimp, artichokes, peppers, peas, chicken, YUM. We booked the Paella King in June 2011 for our wedding this June 2012. He was great to work with! He responded quickly to emails and voicemails, and as most brides, i had a million questions. He is not a full service caterer, meaning he doesn't provide appetizers, flatware, plates, cups, servers, etc, but he does recommend someone else that he works with that can do those things. So you are able to get everything you need. We ended up having to cancel with him for personal reasons, but I thought it was important to note that his service is excellent and we were disappointed we didn't get to try his paella everyone has raved about. Wow... Can't say enough about Jim the "Paella King"!! Called him a few weeks ahead of a party at the house. He was responsive to both phone calls as well as email. Day of the event came and I panicked...had a few late RSVP's... Jim flexed added more servings. Evening of party, Jim set up his equipment in the garage (raining). Serving time came, and everyone exclaimed how wonderful the paella "looked". Full of all kinds of good ingredients, shrimp, clams, chicken, and sausage all in a wonderful rich saffron rice base.
