River view

Reserved a table for eight at 4pm opening. Welcomed warmly by the hostess. She is so friendly and helpful. We had the starter, smoked fish pate served with bread and crackers. Delicious! We had an assortment of Curry pie and Fish and Chips. Fish was nicely battered. Curry pie was tasty. Water bottles are on every table so you can help yourself. The patio was open and the bar downstairs. Plenty of space to move around. The view of the river is very pretty. Will definitely return soon

Always looking for good fish and chips. Found them here but the Belgian chocolate cake was the highlight. And the atmosphere.

Fish & Chips platter with chippy curry sauce

The Oxbow Easley, South Carolina Pop-Up Chippy Night! Leisa had a work event on Thursday night, so I decided to try the Oxbow outside of Easley, for their Pop-Up Chippy Night of Fish & Chips. So far, they only do this menu on Thursday nights, 4 pm to 8 pm. I got there about 4:45 pm and was the only person there. By 5 pm, it was getting very busy. From what the wait staff said, it can get packed out in a hurry. By 5:30 pm, when I left, the upper parking lot was full and half the restaurant was loaded with couples and a few families. The Oxbow is a small establishment right on Old Easley Highway (like if you park in front of the building, you'd better have a compact car or traffic will take off your bumper). It's less than 15 minutes from downtown Greenville, SC, right on the Saluda River. If you've gone tubing on the Saluda, the landing is right below the restaurant. The menu was one item, Fish & Chips, with three sides offered: white bread with Irish butter ($2), Mushy Peas ($3), Chip Shop Curry Sauce ($2). The Fish & Chips is $21. I'd read good things from a few online sources and wanted to try a good fish & chips with an order of the curry sauce. The staff was super helpful and animated, but not clingy. My Diet Coke was refilled constantly as I sat on the back, screened-in porch overlooking the meandering Saluda River. Tables started to fill as I waited maybe 8 minutes for my meal. The metal platter and faux newspaper added a nice little London authenticity, but it was hearing the chef's English accent when I came in that clinched it for me. He knows how to do this well. The serving of fish was like an oven mitt in size, nice and thick too. The breading was light and very crunchy. The cod was tender, mild, and served piping hot. The chips ("French fries" for the uninitiated) were large, a good portion, lightly seasoned with salt and a little pepper. The tartar sauce was creamy and mild too, not "mayonnaisey." The platter was also served with a slice of lemon. That's my only complaint: MORE lemons! The curry sauce alone was worth the ride. It was delicious, and great on the fish as well the chips. (It was thin, like a vinegar sauce, more than a ketchup.) You know when you're hungry and you can't wait to try something new, but it's too hot, but you power through? That's where I was. I was a quarter of the way through this thick slab of fish and thought, "Whoa, buddy! Slow down and enjoy it!" So, I did. The platter was easily enough to have shared with my wife. I wish she had been able to go with me. Lesia's actually had real fish & chips in England. The couple next to me was curious to know if my meal was good and I gave them a quick review. They had made a mistake I almost made--thinking the serving size would be what you'd expect at most places. They doubled their orders and had a MOUNTAIN of fish. There's no way they finished theirs. The hostess/waitress answered all my questions, was always willing to get me more drink or whatever (WHY didn't I ask for more lemons?). She let me know that The Oxbow also does weekend food trucks on the river and live music on Friday and Saturday nights. The platter with the curry sauce and a Coke came to $27.80 plus tip. Out of my normal price range, but for a special night out, I'd come back with friends.

Outside

What a great find! Especially for fish and chips ~ Friday night during Lent ! Clean, friendly, interesting setting overlooking Saluda River. Huge portions, affordable and unique.

Upper Room - Gorgeous spot for a wedding! photo credit: Courtneypricephotography.com

This venue does a lot of false advertising on their website. Our function was planned from a…read moredistance and we could not see this venue in person. We were trying to plan a beautiful wedding for a military couple stationed in Japan. His family is from Greenville area. There were to be between 100-120 guest. The venue manager said the venue would hold 150 easily with no issues, as stated on the website. This is completely incorrect. The venue only has 10 sixty inch round tables for guests to be seated at and those tables only hold 8 comfortably. It seemed once they had a deposit then things started to change. The venue only had 50 chairs and we would have to rent an additional 60 as an extra charge. The entire function was cramped. We had 111 people confirmed and 6 no showed. So with 111 confirmed we had to have an 11th table that they did not have. They charged us to rent that extra table and chairs too. The venue was too small and should change their website. Another mis-truth on the website is that you have several choices of vendors. This is not true either, we were told that the caterer Southern way has exclusivity. They were more expensive than others we got menus from, so that was disappointing. The manager, Steve was rude and condescending at most times. Communication was difficult. On the day of set up, he used our muscle to help put together an Arbor that we had to pay $150 to rent for 30 mins. That's unbelievable to me that he has no employees to help him and that it wasn't included in the venue since it was in their photos online. It seemed there was an extra charge for many things, such as tablecloths. We were also charged for a security guard that was never there. At the end of the function, we had to tear it down and take the trash to the dumpster a block away. Really? Why would you rent a place that is this disorganized and includes nothing. It was a HUGE disappointment! Spend your money elsewhere. Ask lots of questions before you sign a contract. I believe this military couple was taken advantage of at contract signing because of the lies they were told. The Upper Room Greenville should be ashamed of themselves.

David and team brought this connection together! This venue is absolutely gorgeous. From the moment you walk towards the door, you see at the corner of the building, the unassuming yet illuminating Zen sign presence. The foyer greets with such high beautiful ceilings (and walls) with the artistic lighting. There are two other space to enter. If you continue straight, you enter a much larger area that has on its walls, wonderfully large paintings of flowers evoking both energy yet calmness. I discovered that Jeff, the owner had painted the walls and can see the nice brushstroke patterns along with the majority of the flower paintings. We were for the most part in this area which is shaped like a gigantic "L" and you would go further in and to the bottom foot area find a large bar awaiting. There was also a table of desserts and a musician. There were the hors d'oeuvre standing tables yet with nice high seats along with the comfy chairs. We had our networking, food, drinks, and murder mystery here. I've been to Zen many times in the past for several different non-profit/charity events and always so well done. This room depending on the size of attendees is an ideal spot for these types of reception/activities. If you had gone over to the right from the foyer, you would enter a huge space that has on the complete opposite side some large screen that projector is displaying and lighting. There are tables with seats and this brings back memories of when the company I worked for held their holiday parties here and this would also double up as a dance floor! There's another bar right underneath the staircase, and if you walk up the stairs, not only do you have a great view of this room (and if you were trying to search for someone dancing, walk up the stairs and gently look for your man) it also has a private suite that can act as the bridal room since such great furniture, a kitchen and bathroom complete with shower (so if you start getting cold feet, you can turn the heat on your feet)! Not only does Zen have these different space and levels, they even have an exterior space, their own zen garden. I've never noticed it before since other times I've been here, it would be dark and couldn't see OR since it was December, they had tents with heaters. There are many different options to use this beautiful place and Jeff is extremely down-to-earth and inviting. Besides hosting such fancy events, he also has hosted various dance parties. If you or the organization/company/group you identify with have a need for up to 350 people, this would be ideal!

This is a nice event space, but improvements are needed. The layout is nice downstairs with an…read moreindoor air conditioned area, a patio, and then a grassy space down the steps. With the Edison bulbs strung overhead, a wedding here would be very nice but be sure to ask about how long and how loud you can play music. There are clear garage doors that separate the indoor space from the covered patio area. They can't be opened without a city permit, so if you want to use them you'll need to look into this. The bathrooms are large. There is no refrigerator, but there is what I think was a warming cart, a sink, shelves, and a rolling cart in the kitchen area. Parking is tight. When we arrived, the tables inside and out as well as the chairs were covered with pollen. They don't provide any cleaning supplies so we had to get our own and do the cleaning ourselves. When we viewed the property the day before, I thought for sure everything would have been cleaned as part of the price. Wrong! As we were cleaning the chairs they also had grease buildup so they hadn't been cleaned/sanitized in a while. We actually needed more tables but didn't find out until later that there were plenty of them in the upstairs area. The worst part of the evening was the person on duty. He was visibly unhappy to be there and unfriendly. He would only look at us but not speak. When my husband asked about trash bags (you might want to bring those, too) he threw a couple of them his way. As we were cleaning up, I apologized for the delay and he didn't even look at me. And then as we were leaving and I asked if we had gotten everything, he nodded and slammed the gate in our face. We were dumbfounded. I hope the owners realize this doesn't make for good business. I don't like leaving mediocre reviews unless they are deserved, and this one was.
