We were pleasantly surprised at how good the food was!! We were going to check into our motel accross the street after arriving for one night passing through and decided on this place after the town main drag options didnt look to promising. We walked in and were greeted by a waitress who acknowledged us and said she'd be there to seat us in a minute. She was tending to her tables so we grabbed some menus and waited about 5 minutes to be seated. Another couple walked in behind us and sat at a dirty hightop table close to the bar, where that same waitress came out from the back carrying food, told them "I'll be there to clean your table" and after dropping off her food walked past us to grab menus and proceeded to clean their table and get drinks...all while we stood there bewildered and irritated. Thankfully Jo, another waitress, greeted us with a warm welcome shortly after and took us to our table. I briefly complained about us being ignored stating to her "It seems like maybe they were regulars", where she apologized and said she'd take care of us. Jo brought us out a few samples of the draft beers and we settled on the Drake draft. We started.with the sizzling mushroom appetizer, which was SO good!. For our main dish we ordered the fettuchini alfredo with shrimp and chicken marsala which came with soup or salad. They wern't busy as was around 8:00pm, the food came out quickly and Jo checked in making sure we had what we needed. All the food was very good, a tad pricey for certain items like the three 9$ shrimp for the alfredo, but we had nothing negative to say food wise, the service from Jo was excellent and she has a positive vibe. The ambiance there is casual and cozy, which is nice at the end of a day of hiking. I highly recommend and we would return.

We had the best service in a long time from Jess at the Outpost Steakhouse. The taco salad with a spicy and creamy dressing was delicious. The coconut shrimp with a spicy sweet sauce was also delicious. The absolute hit of the meal was the sweet potato tots. Crisp and just a bit salty. We have never had any this fantastic before. Calls for a return trip ASAP. The floor to ceiling wood paneling looks like many fancy steakhouses I've seen. There is a long bar and even room for dances. Don't miss your chance for a visit.

My friend and I stopped at Outpost Steakhouse for dinner after we visited Burney Falls. The inside of the restaurant reminds me of being in a warm cabin. The servers were attentive and we were seated right away. They serve limited quantities of prime rib on Fridays and Saturdays so naturally I had to try! The 13oz prime rib plate was $37 and it comes in with your choice of a soup or salad and potatoes (fries, mashed, or baked potato). The server informed us that they are also know for the clam chowder which is also served only on Fridays and Saturdays. I ordered my prime rib with clam chowder and mashed potatoes. I asked for my prime rib to be cooked medium rare but it came out slightly over done. The meat itself had a pleasant taste and the potatoes were fluffy. I was a bit disappointed by the clam chowder because the clams tasted very rubbery. One redeeming quality about the soup was that it was thick and creamy which is how I personally prefer clam chowder. The clam chowder came in with a side of sourdough bread which was nice added bonus. Overall, this place is had good service and nice value on the prime rib. The food is great for warming up after a cold day in the snow or if you just want some hardy food after a day of exploring the Shasta area.

This spot was right next to the motel I was staying at, so perfect dinner spot to just walk over to! I ordered the steak bits which came with the mushrooms and my group got the apple bread pudding as dessert. My steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned which is hard to do! The mushrooms were the perfect side and a great change from your normal vegetable. The apple bread pudding was average, nothing special. The service was great, and the vibe was exactly what you'd expect from a spot in Burney. I would definitely recommend this spot if you're looking for something more on the "fancy" side food wise in Burney.

The Outpost exceeded our expectations! I made sure to get the prime rib, a special available on Fridays and Saturdays only. It arrived perfectly medium rare, and looked a lot bigger than the 13oz description on the menu. It nearly took up the whole plate! Great flavor, but could have been a bit more tender. My bf got the the rib eye and that also had very good flavor with a nice chew, cooked exactly medium rare, just as he requested. Really healthy side of button mushrooms for a steal at $1! A soup or salad came with our entrees and we got a minestrone and a clam chowder. Both ok, but wouldn't order on their own. The hotzerellas were good too. The diced jalapeños in the mozzarella were new to us. You can never go wrong with fried cheese! Really friendly, attentive service! Everyone was so nice. I called and made a reservation a month in advance, but it looked like you could probably walk in and be seated pretty quickly. 4.5 stars overall.

Forgot to take a picture before I ate 1/4 of it!

Was craving for steaks while visiting Burney Falls so we were recommended to Outpost from our motel across the street. Our waitress was sweet and patient with us while we look over the menu. The 13oz prime rib was phenomenal and thick! Would definitely be back if we're in town again. Next time, we will have to try the sizzling mushrooms. It smelled delish!

Had an absolutely wonderful experience here with my Wife for her birthday. It wasn't too busy after they just opened, light sounds of other guests dining and country music playing in the background to round out the atmosphere. Service was outstanding, our waitress that evening was all smiles and couldn't be more friendly with us and she made sure to keep checking in with us to make sure everything was going well or if we needed anything. As for the food and drinks? Chefs kiss! I ordered the 13oz Rib Eye topped with grilled onions and mushrooms with a side loaded mashed potatoes (at our waitresses' recommendation) and it did not disappoint in the slightest. I enjoyed my meal with two margaritas from the bar and when I say I went into a food coma back at our room at Shasta Pines believe it, I was out for at least an hour after this! We are definitely putting this on our list of places we will dine at again when we're in the area!

The Outpost is now open for breakfast. It was one word AMAZING. I had Country Fried Steak and it was the best I have ever eaten. Excellent service too.

We stopped in here on a Tuesday evening while driving through the area. There weren't many people dining here tonight which is a pity as we had a very lovely evening. The atmosphere is rustic and it was a bit chilly in the restaurant this evening, but it was a pretty cold evening outside. We sat at a high top in the bar and were tended to by Jess our waitress who was fabulous. She was very informative and had a great attitude and took care of everything for us. I started with a butternut squash soup and then had a delicious chicken marsala dinner which came with wild rice pilaf and steamed vegetables. My husband started with a salad and then had the top sirloin steak and opted for fries. Both of the meals were delicious. We found out the chef is a lady who purchased this business a few years ago. We would definitely go back if we are in this area again. We like to support independently owned businesses like this... Especially if the food is delicious and the employees are so friendly. I'd highly recommend a visit here.

The inside was gorgeous with very cool murals and a great vibe. The outdoor space (where we chose to sit) was nice also. Comfortable seating with a view of downtown. Next, we were met with the nicest staff from the hostess to our wonderful waitress Anna. She was helpful and honest and an absolute joy. We'd go again just to see her. Lastly, but possibly most importantly, the food was superb. Huge portions fairly priced with superb ingredients. I ordered the blackened chicken Cobb salad, which Anna warned me was a bit spicy and she was right, but mixed with the delicious dressing, blue cheese crumbles, bacon, egg, and avocado, the spice was perfect. My husband got the California burger and fries . It was flavorful and perfectly prepared. The fries were crispy and flavorful also. Overall, an excellent dinner and I highly recommend a visit here. Next time we will get the pizza. They looked and smelled so scrumptious.

Assistance+ Balance+…read moreCleanliness+ Deliciousness++ Environment+ Assistance: service was prompt professional and kind, we were greeted warmly and treated kindly. Our waitress was wonderful, the cook was prompt and masterful, the Owner oversaw his restaurant like a proud Lord watching over his kingdom, greeting friends and customers warmly. Balance: quantity and quality versus price were good. Cleanliness: the restaurant was good and good clean order, only complaint is there were a few flys. Clearly the opportunistic as it seemed every time someone would open a door a fly would charge in as quickly as they could following the sweet sweet smell of barbecue. Deliciousness: when I tell you I'm a barbecue snob, I mean it in every sense of the word. I've been grilling since I was a child, I've lived in the south I've lived in the east I've lived on the West Coast and I've lived in the Carolinas. My palate is normally greatly displeased with every barbecue I encounter but I take it for its own merit. Each grill master has their own ups and downs. So when I tell you this was some of the best barbecue I've ever had in my life you can take it as gospel. What you taste when you eat the barbecue here is the meat, the smoke, and the love that goes into it which is a vague term that is hard to define, if I were to try I would have to say that it's a combination of care, the way they prepare it and take care of the meat after it's prepared, seasoning, seasoning is very easy to overdo depending on the meat how long it's going to be cooked what cut it is where it came from how it was processed etc, and how they cut slice or prepare it. That's what love means when it comes to grilling and barbecue. Care, seasoning, preparation. So yes, Old Mill Eatery and Smokehouse blew me away. I only sampled their ground beef, bacon, and tri-tip, but if those are any indicator at the mastery they have over meat I am looking forward to trying everything they have to offer. My tri-tip was cooked to perfection, I could taste the beef, although it was shaved very thin because I had it on a sandwich I could still tell it was tri-tip and not just roast beef being pushed off as tri-tip, the bread was fluffy and fresh and seared with a bit of butter, soft and warm but crisp on the edge, the onion rings were fluffy and yet crispy on the outside, the garlic tater tots were perfect in every way crispy crunchy and savory, the bacon blue Burger was cooked to perfection it was not overpowered by blue cheese crumble and the bacon almost seemed as if it was not only peppered but candied in thick slabs, the side order of garlic bread was perfectly cooked crisp on the edges fluffy in the middle buttery and garlicky as it should be. Absolutely incredible top marks! Environment: there are only a few tables as the restaurant is a bit smaller but what they do with their space is comfortable and works. The restaurant itself is decorated like a lodge, reminiscent of a sawmill or a logging camp, with treated wood and a log cabin aesthetic, the decorations themselves consist mostly of historic articles and photos of both friend and family and the history of the restaurant. They also sell very cool cups that I definitely meant to get and will have to go back to that one for myself and the Missus. I need to make a mental note of that. All together this was a fantastic experience and I can't wait to go back. Their menu had so many things I want to try. The French toast tacos caught my eye definitely going to try that. But more importantly to me I want more of that barbecue, I want to try the brisket, sausage, chicken, pulled pork, I want to try it all! If the other items are half as good as what I had today I don't think I need to eat anywhere else. If you find yourself in Shasta Lake do yourself a favor and try the Old Mill Eatery and Smokehouse. See if you can take on their Giant Smokehouse Burger or a Pit Master challenge.
