Guinness galore!
Bridget B.

We made the bold decision of coming here with a big group on St Patrick's day - and the risk paid off! The bar is actually massive fit with a big outdoor patio. We enjoyed a ton of guinesses and the staff was awesome and seriously held it down. The bar was fully decked out with clovers, guinness decor, etc. Would definitely return - it has a ton of character!

Rating this pub 5 stars for various reasons! Their happy hour has all draft beers for $5.50 including Guinness and they have a great selection! The bartender was super friendly and everyone in there was just so welcoming. It definitely gives a local neighborhood bar!

I actually have come to like this bar. Gets really packed. They also have Karoake which is fun. People here a generally nice including the bartenders. Good vibes here overall. I would say parking is as it would be expected; can be hard to find. But if you do manage to find parking you also have the option to go to other local spots on the same street so you can just walk.

Head on in!

Sometimes you just want to go to a bar. Not interested in food or dancing, just a good bar but not a fancy bar. You want a stool and some booze. The Ould Sod is that kind of bar! It's a good bar because it's well stocked for the classics, not pretentious, the bartenders are friendly, and (most importantly in the summer heat) they have a/c. Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows it's not cool to have swamp ass and maybe, if you're here frequently enough, they'll know your name. Is The Ould Sod a dive bar? Sure, techincally, but it's a nice dive because as you can see it's an Irish pub which makes it at least 50% nicer than your standard American dive. Might be the accents. I met some friendly regulars, even took one with us to another stop later in the evening on our hunt for post-drink eats. There are plenty of tasty joints around the neighborhood so you can make a whole night of it. Happy hour (M-F 4-6) saves you a couple bucks per drink. Since I'm still touring around all the dives in SD- I was here for an old fashioned, or three to be honest, the spacious patio that's out back if my group needed to spread out, and a bit of that aforementioned a/c. Important bar note- the bathrooms are clean and they even have a spacious handicap accessible bathroom my fat ass appreciates. If you're looking for some weekend fun- Saturday nights (after 9 pm) they have karaoke. As with any bar the later it gets the rowdier it'll be. As for me? I'll be back on another chill Thursday night, early, sipping a house old fashioned, and being happy my friends like this bar as much as I do. Hopefully yours feel the same way. Invite them and find out!

Old bartender was rude and rascist. Most unbecoming old sod himself. Also smells like piss once entering.

Ask the Community - The Ould Sod

Do they have food?

They do not serve food, aside from chips. You are welcome to bring in your own food and there are many places nearby with great options!

Do you know if you can rent space for a 40th birthday party?

They have a back patio bar which private parties can rent out and bring catering.

Is there karaoke on Monday nights?

I know they have it on Thursday and Saturday, I don't think so on Monday.

This spot just gets it…read more I came through recently and was honestly excited before I even ordered food because they had a solid selection of NA mocktails. For a bar, that's not always a given, and as someone who doesn't drink as much these days, that immediately stood out to me. I grabbed a lavender leprechaun and it was super refreshing, light, and just a really nice change of pace from the usual soda-or-water options. It didn't feel like an afterthought, it actually felt intentional. For food, I went with the corned beef sandwich and it did not disappoint. Hearty, flavorful, and exactly what you'd want from a proper Irish pub. The whole place has that classic pub vibe but still feels welcoming whether you're drinking or not. That balance is rare, and I really appreciated it. Definitely a spot I'd come back to, especially knowing I've got solid non-alcoholic options to enjoy.

Stopped by The Field Irish Pub in downtown San Diego for a Guinness and a bite on St Patrick's Day,…read moreso as expected, it was absolutely packed. Despite the crowds, service was impressively fast. We grabbed seats at the bar and were taken care of right away, which was a pleasant surprise given how busy it was. Food-wise, the fish and chips were good, but not amazing--solid, but nothing to rave about. The sausage rolls, unfortunately, were a bit underwhelming for me. I was hoping for a crispier, flakier pastry, but they fell a little short in texture. One thing I really miss is the live music they used to have before Covid. It added so much to the atmosphere, and I'd love to see them bring that back. Outside of big events like St. Patrick's Day, the place can feel a bit quiet, so the music would definitely elevate the overall vibe. Overall, still a great spot for a pint and good service--especially impressive during peak crowds--but there's definitely room to bring back some of that old charm.

I am honestly surprised I have not written a review for this place yet, I found this place in 2021…read more I bring visitors here all the time, and it has become my ultimate comfort food spot. I tend to keep it simple and order the same items every time. My go to is the crispy Brussels for $14 and the chicken sandwich for $16, and I usually rotate in the parmesan fries for $10. While they do offer other dishes that are worth trying, these favorites always keep me coming back. The service and ambiance are consistently great. It is located in Hillcrest, so the area is always lively, which adds to the overall experience. The energy, combined with the quality of the food, makes it a reliable choice whether I am dining with friends or hosting out of town guests. Parking can be a bit challenging, but that is typical for Hillcrest. I usually plan ahead and look for street parking nearby.

3 stars for the food, 5 stars for the drinks, so I gave em 4 stars. Got the brussels sprouts and…read moreartichoke hearts and they were doused in far too much sauce and insanely salty. I love the vegetables for what they are and want sauce and seasoning to enhance them, not be the star of the show. Got the hot honey chick and pork belly bao buns which were pretty good, nice and fluffy. Drinks wise, I got the blueberry bramble as well as the berries & cream (both vodka drinks). they were fantastic, so refreshing. Old fashioned was also top notch! server was wonderful and kind. the ambiance is amazing and is a great spot for a date or cozy evening with friends.
