This is probably one of the main reasons people come to Nottingham, and that is to visit this pub…read morebecause, well, it happens to be one of the oldest pubs in the country. The other thing is that the crusaders would visit this pub on the way to the crusades, but there weren't any here when I visited, rather it was packed with all sort, probably tourists, considering the reputation that this pub has. Also, another really cool thing is that this pub is built into the side of a rock outcropping (upon which the castle is built), so yeah, there is so much about this pub that is cool (other than the crowds, which is annoying).

The location is perfect, close to Trent Bridge for a pre-match pint which is of course what I did. Didn't encounter any stick tables or grubby toilets either. With all the TVs on the wall I imagine it would get pretty busy.

I liked the drama of the entrance to the bar (which i wont go into detail about so not to run), but more importantly i liked the bar itself. The first thing i noticed was that you couldnt just go through you had to wait in the entrance area until there was enough room to be seated. You could consider this pretentious, but i saw this as ensuring the right atmosphere. It ensured the bar wasnt too loud with over powering chatter, but instead a pleasant and table serviced experience. When entering the bar itself i was immediately delighted to find we were now within a covered court yard area that had always been behind the facade of the building. A small surprise ...something i hadn't expected or known existed. we were seated in the garden area (inside, but the decor was garden like) with twinkling lights and plenty of greenary, but further in the bar felt more warehousey with old stable stalls at one end. the menu choice of cocktails was bizarre and i didnt really fancy any of them....but my friends did and they were really good. I think i just couldnt see through the narative clearly enough.....my error not there's. a great bar, with a bit of quirk, creating a lovely warm welcoming atmosphere and serving fantastic cocktails. Table service only, no standing at the bar (or anywhere for that matter) with a great range of cocktails and beers. Chilled atmosphere with no loud, lager louts. We went for coffee and after waiting some minutes which was OK as they seemed busy, the waiter served three couples who had arrived after us and ignored us. This may have been because we were squashed into a corner and he couldn't get to us without disturbing other clients. The tables are far too close together. We eventually had to call him and ordered camomile tea and a dry cappuccino. These duly arrived. The tea was lovely; fresh not teabag and in a teapot. The coffee?! Well, actually the flavour was good. But it wasn't even a normal cappuccino let alone a dry one. It was the sort of milky coffee my mum would have loved! Then I had to clamber through the doors into the main area to use the toilet as I coldn't get out! They were only OK. A very noisy air flow unit and not spotless. Oh, and they weren't busy either- only 6 or so people! They haven't been open long so I will give it another go soon. I wish new places would offer a review card. I was far too frustrated to ask to talk to anyone! xx
