Its full of country pubs and The Fishpond is one of the best, so be sure to call in for a pint or for lunch when you need a break from your long ambling stroll in the beautiful countryside. It's a proper pubby pub, with an old-style bar and a standard selection of pub drinks including some well tastly local ales. They also have a 'ballroom' that plays host to local live music, including young bands and up-and-coming musicians from the local area. As the young people in the area have considerably less to do than the urban kids on Manchester, this gesture should be appreciated. It serves a good selection of pub foods, such as fish and chips and sandwiches and chips and chips and chips. If you're coming from Manchester for a day trip you can get a bus from Manchester Central bus station that stops at a stop actually called 'The Fishpond Matlock' so it makes the perfect place to have a beer before you begin your country walk or day in the picturesque spa-town.

First stop was Matlock - cute little village, powerful river flowing though town, nice views all around. We wanted to have lunch but hadn't really seen anything and so we decided to head to Bakewell (about 20 minutes drive) when I noticed a classy, inviting, purple sign by the road "The Orangery". We quickly turned around and are so glad that we did! We had a really GREAT lunch and have already booked again for Christmas Eve when our daughter and new husband visit. It may sound odd but it used to be part of a very prestigious school for over a century - the most famous "Old Girl" was Richmal Crompton who wrote all the "William" books that I devoured as a kid. Now the whole complex is basically a old peoples home (Man are they lucky!!). So the lunchgoers were, on average, grey haired (but I am going that way too) - but it was fairly quiet in terms of lunchgoers and music (just the right volume - Christmas songs, Wham and many many more of the favorites. The restaurant drips class, the bistro also (full bar). A wide selection of offerings _ I seriously wanted the prawn curry but got lured into a Christmas special. Sirloin steak (medium to well done) arrived and a faint mooing could still be heard as the blood ran from it. Cannelloni Verdi was cold in the centre so we asked for it to be sorted, which it was... by using the microwave. Chef came over when we complained and started off okay but then went off on one asking us if we wanted him to knock the price of the whole meal off the bill... to which we agreed (best not to try and be a smart arse with disappointed customers) but then he refused after all that. Would rather eat in the local park, in the rain, from the bins than go here again. Bizarrely they have a Trip Adviser sticker in the window... and the first 5 reviews say to avoid it like the plague... wish we'd seen those first!!!!!

I sat outside in the corner by the river and the back of the house, and while I waited for my meal, a little trough containing assorted olives and nuts was placed in front of me. I ordered a nice red, and it came suitably warm. The starter was braised fennel with Mango andmixed leaves. The main was salmon fillet on crushed new potatoes with creamy leeks, capers and tomato, and with my Espresso came 6 handmade petit fours including caramel swirl, truffle, and orange chocolate. Anyhow we were really impressed and very much enjoyed the lunch 3 courses for £20 in a very clean and classic dining room on sunny saturday afternoon. The bream and the steak were superb. Pleasant service and reasonable priced. I would recommend if you are in the area. Also Matlock is beautiful.
