I order the paper for my skilled nursing facility in Garden Grove. First, it's expensive and 2nd we don't always receive it. So, then I have to constantly call in and report it, then they tell me it should be here in 1 to 2 hours, and I still don't receive it. It shouldn't be that hard to deliver a newspaper to a business. These are elderly and disabled patients and just want to read the paper. If it wasn't for them asking for this newspaper, I wouldn't be order it. I so wish this paper was better and I fully understand what's going on as it related to the business model and economics of newpapers in america. I love reading the paper as part of my morning routine but how this paper treats Loyal customers is BS. costs goin up so much and paper 1/10 of what is sued to be with the majority of it AP stuff that I can read for free elsewhere. also there customer service is total BS. we travel alot and cant get credits for paper on hold. they had my operation dates wrong and when I finally canceled they never accepted it and kept delivering and charing us. Horrible delivery service, it's bad enough the paper is nearly $500 a year, you have to wait till they're good and ready to deliver the morning edition to your home by 8am or 9am. Really really bad, egregious situation with my subs with this newspaper. They got me for an automatic renewal five months ago, and I have since made six attempts (on more than a monthly basis) to cancel, yet they kept charging my credit card and telling me they were escalating my requested refund to "the finance department." Well, that finance department (five months later) has never offered resolution of ANY kind and the last two phone reps actually said that I had no escalation tickets in my file. Additionally, it's all Indian phone agents who do not understand conversational English to a proficient level for the job and when I demand a US based call center they tell me there isn't one (?!) For a large, California newspaper, this is inconceivable to me. This is all shady as heck; do not give this paper your credit card number. SCAMMERS! and so annoying. They have people coming by for "college fundraising" saying that if i use my school email i'll get my money refunded to me. They don't give refunds despite the fact that i was tricked by their people and they try to trick you by not informing you about the automatic subscription. Since November of 2021, I have paid $4/month for my on-line subscription to the Orange County (CA) Register. I was told by staff at that time "...we have a promotional going which is $4 for every 4 weeks of our digital services. This is a perpetual price it won't change, would you like to take advantage of it?" I did, and called again in January of 2022 to verify that price because it sounded just too good to be true. I was told again by the OCR staffer (Lorenzo) that "the renewal price is $4 per every 4 weeks of service." And that "This is a perpetual price. It will remain forever. It won't change". I just received (6/4/25) a new rate announcement for the online OCR that increases my subscription price from $4 per month to $6.50 per week. In real terms that is from $48 to $338/year. This is a classic long-term bait and switch. I just called the OCR "service line" and was told I'm out of luck because OCR occasionally changes its rate. She would not listen to me reading the phone transcript I have in front of me about my "perpetual rate". Has anyone else experienced this scam? read more

Watch out! The worst! The Register's pricing and billing system are WAY worse than any of the cable companies you have always hated so much. In my case, there was 36% increase last year and now a 46% increase this year! How can annual price increases like these possibly be justified? (remember, we're talking about a newspaper!) Also, in my case, I paid the quoted/specified price for a full 52-weeks and then was later shorted 3 months on the "Paid Through Date" due to what they said was "surcharges" ????. In my mind, I paid the specific price for 52 weeks and should get 52 weeks of service, correct? Not be told later that I had been "shorted" due to "surcharges" (which, by the way, were not explained in detail). Something does not sound above board. This is not the first time this has happened - it is now the 2nd year in a row. Every year it's the same thing - they've messed up my billing, tried to increase the price an outrageously unexplainable amount, we have a very long phone discussion, they apologise and promise the same thing won't happen next year and then beg for me to subscribe again for another year. Does this sound familiar? If there were a zero star options that would be my rating. I ordered the print version to be delivered as a gift to my 93 year old mother to give her an activity as she is housebound. She was looking forward to receiving the paper and each morning the caregiver would go out to to the driveway to get the paper that was never delivered. Each time I called their office, I was told the exact thing that they were sorry, put me on hold forever to get back and say it has been expedited and she will receive tomorrow. I grew up reading the O.C. Register as my parents began subscribing in 1968. I ceased my subscription years ago but in a nostalgic symbol of support with their surviving the pandemic, I took out a 99 cent promotion for a digital account, although I no longer read this local paper. As the saying goes, "No good deed goes unpunished." Due to fraudulent activity from another source, I cancelled my credit card only to learn that I was being charged $14 a month for digital access to the Register. Note, anyone can access this newspaper for free using their library card: Find the OC Register from the list, then click on the link. Type in your library card number (if you have a physical card it is on the back side, below the barcode), then click on "Log in" Look for "America's News" then look for the "Orange County Register Collection" bullet point, then click on the link. I attempted to cancel my subscription but the Rep. refused to write off the charges. Today I received an invoice from the Register revealing the 99 cent monthly charge that increased to $14, has now lept to $18.95 per month. Had I been receiving a physical newspaper delivered by a contract employee driving to my residence, I would feel inclined to pay a reasonable fee. But the O.C. Register's attempt to bully me into a nearly $20 a month charge for a digital newspaper I can read for free with my library card is exorbitant, unreasonable, and has destroyed a customer relationship in excess of 60 years. Like others have noted, the newspaper lacks serious, quality journalism. Most news items of note that reflect quality reporting are from other sources like the NY Times, WSJ, etc. Then you have sloppy, lazy in-house columnists that keep referring to a "trusty spreadsheet" to justify all their "expert" analysis on any given topic. Every column, the same dribble. No creativity or actual journalistic reporting. It's no secret that newspapers are struggling these days (unfortunately) but it doesn't help to fill the paper with highschool puff pieces and 'writers' more interested in seeing their byline than turning out something quality. like some magic writing tool - except after using in every column only highlights the lack of creativity and read more

I lived through the automated voice to answer why I called. I finally had to ask for a live agent in customer service. I advised the agent that I wanted to purchase 10 copies of the Sunday June 1, 2025 edition. They said that they would check to see if they can do that. After several minutes the agent came back and said I can have the 10 editions for $100. I repeated what I wanted and the agent repeated that the 10 issues would be $100. My 91 year old mother has been receiving this paper since the 70's. They were charging her $157 for 4 week delivery including Sunday. I checked with another customer only to find out they were charging her $38 for 8 weeks including Sunday. This newspaper should be ashamed of themselves for taking advantage and ripping off the elderly. When I called them they told me "every customers price is different". What the hell?? So you make up the prices as you go along?? They ultimately gave her the same rate as the other aforementioned customer but had been ripping off my mother for years! They also have delivered the newspaper wet and not delivered a new one when I called to complain. The supervisors I've spoken with are useless. If I could give zero stars I would and I would cancel the paper but my mom enjoys reading it so that's why I haven't yet done so. They would not honor the expiration date that was agreed upon and what I paid for trying to tell me due to their situation they could not honor so they were cutting it off 5 months early. They will not stop harassing me with calls in regards to my card info. I placed a call to cancel my subscription, but they never ended up canceling it. My card expired so I got a new one, and they keep calling wanting updated information after I told them to cancel it. Its actually ridiculous the way that they handle subscriptions. I would also give them 0. I live in oakland, ca, but was interested in something in the orange county area so I took trial subscription which I cancelled by phone before that trial ended. I recall that it was really hard to contact them. Anyway, I now see that I have been charged $14 a month since Jan 9, 2024, even though I had already cancelled my subscription. And I certainly didn't get any notice that subscription renewal was coming up. They make it almost impossible to cancel and definitely impossible to get any money back. Customer service claims they never got a cancellation call or email. I recall that there was no way to cancel online. (I don't check my credit card statement regularly and didn't discover this until just now. Definitely lesson learned.) read more

Be careful of these guys. We paid for a one year subscription for Sunday print in August of 2023. Next we got a renewal notice showing expiration of June 2024. Their explanation was that they charged a fuel surcharge during the term. This effectively, without our approval, shortened our term by at least one month - probably more. Reading the newspaper is my elderly mother's daily routine, and she looks forward to reading her sports page and local news. She received her renewal notice $551.66 for 52 weeks. I thought it was a bit high. I looked online, and they offer $200 for 52 weeks to new subscribers. "EXACT SAME SERVICE!!!" I called and was told that is a promotion and she doesn't qualify for it, she already has a subscription, and this is for new subscribers only. I asked how they think it's okay to offer $351.66 discount for new subscribers and forget about the long-term loyal subscribers. The answer was "well after the promotion the price is going up anyhow, so you want to pay for your moms subscription now over the phone it's $551.66". The nerve of this company! I can completely understand new promotions; HOWEVER $351.66 difference is absurd and taking advantage of loyal long-term customers. We will not renew and I'm sure the OC Register doesn't care; they will continue to take advantage of people and not lose a moments sleep, just keep accepting payment. read more

BEWARE OF THEIR PROMOTIONS! They advertise $1 for six months and you have to give your credit card. I cancelled my 'automatic renewal' subscription three days before the six month mark, and they charged me for a whole year anyway. This is a review for their terrible billing practices. I signed up for an introductory online subscription. Once that expired, I renewed for a $4 per month subscription. One month after renewing, I was charged $34 on my credit card. I had to call three times to get an explanation for why my subscription price went up 850%. The first time I called, the system was down and they couldn't assist me. The second time I called, the agent hung up on me before I could even explain the situation. The third time I called, I was told my rate went up because there was a rate change and that they notified me by U.S. Mail about the price increase. I found this completely unacceptable, as I never received any such notice nor did I ever approve of the price increase. I canceled the subscription immediately, but I wouldn't be shocked if they charge my credit card again next month. I'll be filing a claim with my credit card company. The wild thing is that when I was canceling my subscription, they offered a one-year online subscription for $14 total. If they had just kept my original subscription of $4/mo, they would have made more money from me! I'm sorry, I can't do business with a company that has shady billing practices like this. read more
