It's the kind of place that really should have been rendered obsolete by downloading, but hasn't. Fair dues to it for keepin' on. It's a great place to pick up a hard to find record or box set, but it's so small they don't have much stock. Last time I was in there, I saw albums being sold on cassette. Again, fair dues. I only ever really use Sound Cellar for buying tickets to gigs, as it's the only place I know that sells tickets to almost all Dublin venues that isn't Ticketmaster. Plus, they don't charge you through the nose for add-ons like booking fees.

I wandered in and left with a Hot Press magazine and a Taylor Swift calendar for my Swiftie Wife (who already had the latest album). I should have stuck around for the CDs, especially the new "Tracks II: The Lost Albums" and "Nebraska '82: Expanded Edition" music collections. Or maybe a Boomtown Rats album?

As we walked by, we saw a sign that said, "Secret Book & Record Store", with an arrow pointing into a deep narrow hallway with posters of advertisements covering the walls. These places are the great finds in Dublin. At the end of the hall was a large room filled with used books, vintage vinyl & new releases including CDs. The store was a frezy of customers flipping through the bins of vinyl to find that one great band from their past. I did find a few old 80s punk albums but still on a quest today to find an original GBH or Exploited cover.

I eventually discovered its existence on the recommendation of a friend, so I took myself along one day to get the 411, as it were. And I haven't looked back since. The Secret Book & Record Store is how you would make a shop of this type look like if you were making a film about a cool shopkeeper and the problems he has with his idiosyncratic love life (whoops, just checked IMDB and 'High Fidelity' has already been made. Ah pooh). If you have a particular book in mind and think you might go to SB&RS on the off-chance that they might have it: don't. This one is strictly for the rummagers, but a rummagers dream it certainly is, with piles of books stacked any oul' way. I don't go in for records much meself but they have them too. Tip-top shop.

Vintage records and digitally remastered ones too including CD's. My favorite find were the Fanzines with bands posting their gigs and advertising merch. Spoke with the clerk about the 80s punk era. He had some vintage original vinyl and photos in the bins to pick through. Love type of store and many more around this area in Temple Bar District.

In the spirit of its location, there's an area dedicated to Irish writers that is a must-browse. Next, the bookseller made some stellar recommendations when I asked for contemporary Irish literature recs. Currently reading The Amendments by Niamh Mulvey, and it'll be, without a doubt, one of my favorite reads of the year. Several more recs made it onto my TBR.
