Small mom and pop shop. Nice folks running the place. You'll find a variety of good music to get. It's a gem!

Sub City is for all those comic book fans out there - a treasure trove of material. They focus much…read moremore on the printed matter than on the toy/collectible end of things. The shop is narrow but packed and reasonably priced even in this age of internet shopping. Whether you've read all the Frank Miller stories out there or you've just heard of Alan Moore, this is not an off-putting nerd-paradise that you might expect. That may have something to do with the daylight streaming in the window.

The world of comic books is one that I have never delved into. I am a big fan of reading, and of…read morelooking at pictures but comics have just never interested me. Combine that with the fact that anime scares me, and you have the reason why I have never, ever been inside a comic book shop. But, I decided to be brave and check Sub-City out, for the sake of adventure and boredom. Now, having absolutely no knowledge of comics, going into a lion's den of this sort was extremely intimidating. I really didn't have much to look for or at, because I wasn't looking for anything and didn't know what I was looking at. But, the guy at the desk greeted me like he would any other comic book dork and I was enlivened. I perused the comics, marveled at the amazing artwork in some and checked out the models, which are probably a lot of fun to put together. The guy was tied up with another customer, but when they were done I knew he was going to come talk to me and I got all panicked. Lo and behold, he sauntered over and chippily said, "how's it going?" "I don't know what I'm doing, I'm just looking around. Huuyuuuh thanks!," I blubbered. He laughed and proceeded to say it was totally cool and to let him know if I needed help. He handled my dork meltdown well, which makes me think he probably deals with that a lot.

While in Dublin, Ireland, there is a vintage quarter with a retro shops selling new and used vinyl,…read morebooks and collectibles. As we walked by, we saw a sign that said, "Secret Book & Record Store", with an arrow pointing into a deep narrow hallway with posters of advertisements covering the walls. These places are the great finds in Dublin. At the end of the hall was a large room filled with used books, vintage vinyl & new releases including CDs. The store was a frezy of customers flipping through the bins of vinyl to find that one great band from their past. I did find a few old 80s punk albums but still on a quest today to find an original GBH or Exploited cover.

I eventually discovered its existence on the recommendation of a friend, so I took myself along one day to get the 411, as it were. And I haven't looked back since. The Secret Book & Record Store is how you would make a shop of this type look like if you were making a film about a cool shopkeeper and the problems he has with his idiosyncratic love life (whoops, just checked IMDB and 'High Fidelity' has already been made. Ah pooh). If you have a particular book in mind and think you might go to SB&RS on the off-chance that they might have it: don't. This one is strictly for the rummagers, but a rummagers dream it certainly is, with piles of books stacked any oul' way. I don't go in for records much meself but they have them too. Tip-top shop.

I really really wanted to give this place a top review, but I just can't find it in myself to do…read moreit. I went in looking for a guitar, ukulele, and a couple of different restrings too. The stock they have is awesome, the shop is super nicely laid out, really like stepping back in time. The guitars and ukulele's are beautiful, and genuinely good prices. I spoke to someone on the phone who was knowledgeable and really kind, however when I went in, the guy serving just made us feel like we were an inconvenience. We spent over 200euro all in, and it wasn't until the next day when I went to pick up one of the guitars he showed a bit more empathy and gratitude. He mentioned he was grateful for the custom, especially as everyone is going online now these days. I mean, I get that, however, the day before he just couldn't have been less enthused. Buying a ukulele for my mum, guitar for my nephew... all new to this incredible world of string instruments... If it had been me, I would have offered suggestions, helped out, maybe thrown in a couple of plectrums, even a re-string, but no, nothing of the kind. I remember 24 years ago (I'm 37 now) going into Dublin city to these music shops to stare at guitars, the people in the shops were so kind and accommodating, letting me try them out, offering tips and suggestions. I miss that.
