We came to celebrate a very special birthday. It was our first visit, so a bit anxious. However, from my very first interactions with owner, it was a most pleasant, friendly experience. Our visit was absolutely wonderful. From the lovely staff, the fairytale like ambiance of the restaurant to the marvelous, imaginative food. This is not a slam, bam, dinner joint. This is a sit back, take your time looking over the menu, making your selections and then having the time to appreciate each selection and more importantly, enjoy each delicious morsel. We chose a number of appetizers to share. a seafood escabeche, pot stickers, and two kinds of wings. Everything was wonderful. For entrees we also managed different selections. Pork, chicken,lamb and seafood. Since we are all family we had no problem sharing and tasting each others entree. I had a wonderful chicken prepared in a Mediterranean style, the roast pork my husband had was moist, tasty and tender. While the pad thai our niece ordered was very flavorful, her friend had lamb which was perfectly prepared. The only dish which was slightly disappointing was the seafood fra diablo but not because it was not tasty, but because two of the clams remained closed. Desserts were also different selections, though I thought my strawberry/rhubarb pie was smashing. The birthday girl, got a terrific cannoli with two birthday candles. I am well traveled and eat at fine dining establishments all over the country. I think this is the best steak in Schuylkill County and the service has always been excellent. This is a place I can bring my children for a nice meal or someone special for an evening out. My wife and I were visiting Schuylkill, Pa. last weekend and the Nutty Pear was recommended to us. I have eaten steaks in Mortons, Smith and Wollensky, Ruth's Chris, Peter Lugar, The Palm and Burton and Doyle. And although those meals were excellent, I have never enjoyed a steak as well as I had at the Nutty Pear. The item title on the menu was "filet au poivre", a generous slab of filet mignon covered in a pepper mushroom sauce. That steak was so good, and although I was full, I didn't want the meal to end! (And the onion soup was excellent, too!).The next time my wife and I are in the area, we'll definitely dine at the Nutty Pear again. read more

My husband and I met some friends this evening at this wonderful little place for the first time. It's hidden way off the beaten path but worth the trip. The meals were delicious and fresh. I had Salmon with a dill sauce ,the fish was so fresh and flavorful . ask for the sauce on the side, it was a large serving. My friends steak was scrumptious with blue cheese on top and the Mediterranean veggies over pasta instead of rice was fresh and delicious. My husband had the chicken cutlets and said they were wonderful. We didn't have dessert because we were to full but they looked great. The bill per couple was 80.00 very reasonable for the food and cocktails we will be back!!! They only take cash or check and its BYOB and a $15 bottle opening fee is charged. read more

Bring Cash. My fiancee and I came here because we were looking to have a nice dinner and the Nutty Pear was recommended to me by some co-workers. We went here on a Friday night around 8:00 pm. The dining area is cozy, but still feels private, and the walls are covered with pictures, posters and other trinkets. The dinner menu was split into several categories: pasta, chicken, salmon, beef. And while there were not any menu items that jumped off the page, both of our meals were prepared well. For the most part, dinner entrees were priced between $22.00 and $30.00. We did not get to try any desert because we were full after dinner and drinks, but I wish I had, the item described by the waitress as being the "signature desert" sounded great. I like that you can bring your own wine, but there is a $15.00 cork fee. That seems a bit too much. Bottom line - Cozy dining room and decor makes for a great date, the menu is nothing you will see on top chef, and although dinner is a bit pricey, the food is prepared well. What makes the Nutty Pear special is that it offers something not too common for the area - A nicer place for a dinner date. We will come back. read more

Let me start off by saying that the atmosphere is so homey. The restaurant is in an old 1800s house with the beams showing and the lighting is muted on the inside to give you a very romantic feel. Next I'm going to say hats off to the chef! This was the best meal/experience ever for us. We started off with warm and freshly made bread, and appetizers. I had escargot and my husband had the shrimp wrapped with bacon. Next was our salads which were made with the freshest ingredients. I had blue cheese dressing and my husband had creamy garlic which both were clearly made from scratch. I had the blackened salmon with blue cheese and a potato nest and my husband had clams shrimp and scallops in a sauce over rice. The menu specifically states that everything is made to order. So if you love trying different things and enjoy an unbelievable culinary experience then this is the place you need to go to. I called Thursday for a Saturday night reservation. The reservation method is simply leaving your name, phone number, party number and desired day and time on their answering machine. They will only call you back if there is a reservation conflict. My wife and I arrived at 5:30pm and left at 7:30pm. Eating is an event here; you will not get out quickly. Typically, this would bother me as I hate waiting and dining out in general. However, this was a very pleasurable experience. We were promptly greeted and seated upon arriving. Our waitress, Gina, was very attentive throughout. You have to duck to get in the front door and the floor is not exactly flat. It all added to the charm. We sat in the smaller, darker front dining area near the very small bar. This area is far more quaint than the larger, brighter dining room. If a rustic atmosphere is preferred, request the front room. The menu offered many more selections than I expected from a place open just three nights a week. We enjoyed our escargot, wings and our low carb shrimp entrees. There were plenty of other things I wanted to order. Bring cash or a check; credit cards are not accepted. I would definitely recommend the Nutty Pear to friends looking for a place that's a little bit different. read more

The reservation system is not very good. We arrived and our reservation was not recorded and a woman came out from behind the kitchen without introducing herself and rudely spoke to us about this matter. We did have a table though and were seated promptly. We expect the service to be slow here and were not disappointed. From getting drinks to appetizers to our check it was a slow process. Thankfully the atmosphere is pleasant which makes it bearable and we had great conversation. Ordering an appetizer, it took 55 minutes for our appetizer to arrive. My husband ate the whole loaf of bread thankfully to tide him over. The bread was great. The appetizer was not impressive, crackers, a few small pieces of fruit with baked brie in a small dish for dipping. Definitely didn't need 55 minutes to prepare. My main entree of Caprese Chicken was average, missing a richness in flavor. My husband had a Lemon Cod for his main entree dish that was very good. As we finished our dinner and decided to not have dessert we waited about 45 minutes for our check to be processed. Our waiter seemed to be busy with another party even though the restaurant had emptied out quite a bit and another server took care of our bill. During our dinner I did have to get up and allow a server to access and remove two chairs from our table. I moved the chair out to the aisle for the waitress to access so I could sit down again. So with all this being said it was a disappointing experience because we expect more from this restaurant. Our rule is three strikes so this is strike one. read more

I wish I could give it ZERO stars. Spent over $100 for the worst steak I've ever had, and bad service to boot! I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. There were two things that were good-the bread basket and the appetizer (I had escargot-and you really can't mess up anything that's sitting in garlic butter). My husband had the goat cheese and fig crostini--it was OVER THE TOP sweet. For our main course, we each got steak--I got the one topped with their house made blue cheese, my husband had the french onion topped steak. My "ribeye" was NOTHING but fat---in every. single. bite. My husbands steak was clearly overcooked-to the point it had that weird texture, and the cheese/onion combination on top had this really awful flavor. The waitress, well, she had to have help to uncork a bottle of wine. She couldn't tell us what kind of martini's they had, what kind of gin they had, or what kind of beer they had. We got there at 6:30pm.....didn't get out until 9pm, and we did not even have dessert--we watched people come and go as we sat. And sat. All in all, it was an awful experience. A shame, because the place is really cute, I had hoped to love it. We will NOT be returning. read more

Went here for valentines day and it was a terrible experience. Not only did the food take an hour to come, with the dining room empty, but when the check came we were informed it's CASH OR CHECK ONLY. We're not informed this when we called for reservations or when we sat down. Also, the place is very pricy for food you can make in your own kitchen. The chicken Marsala had maybe 4 pieces of mushroom in it, and the chicken bruschetta appetizer had about a pound of tomatoes on it for 4 small pieces of bread. Our waitress came to our table only 3 times in the full hour we waited and we had to hunt her down to ask for the check. Very unenjoyable and overpriced for the experience we had. read more

Had our anniversary dinner here on June 21 and as usual, this place has impressed us once again. We had the clams in garlic/wine, french onion soup, shrimp piccatta, bruschetta shrimp, and fresh strawberries with real whipped cream for dessert. Their "simple" house salad is an event in itself: fresh interesting field greens, fresh beet slice, bell pepper, carrot slivers, and homemade dressings. The food is all incredibly fresh and hand-crafted. The French onion soup is like none you've ever had. Shrimp in the entrees are huge and tender. The restaurant this night was very busy with a large birthday party, but the service was still great - attentive and efficient. We've been coming here since the early 90's and will continue to do so. We drive an hour to come here for dinner. Cozy, quaint place on a quiet country road. Just wonderful. read more

My boyfriend and I ate there this weekend. The salad was good, but menu is limited and overpriced. The chicken alfredo over pasta could have used more sauce. It was kind of dry and the Salmon dish was average. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. Stick to The Greystone for qualilty food. read more

We were taken to the The Nutty Pear restaurant this past Saturday night by our very dear friends. What a pleasant surprise!!! The restaurant is housed in a very lovely building, built in 1792. It is warm and charming...fabulous ambiance. We enjoyed a lovely predinner drink at the cozy bar before moving to our table in the diningroom. The service could not have been more gracious or accommodating. The waitress went out of her way to see to our every need, including mixing up a pitcher of Crystal Light for my friend, the Designated Driver...who brought her own packet of Crystal Light! There were four of us celebrating being together again and each of us ordered different appetizers, salads and entrees. All of the food was prepared to order, using the freshest ingredients and cooked to perfection! We each raved about our selections...with much sharing going on between us. While most foo-foo restaurants send you home hungry with an empty purse, not one of us was able to finish his or her portion. I am embarrassed to say that we actually ordered dessert simply out of curiousity, as it was named after the restaurant and the description was enticing. When you go to the Nutty Pear...you MUST order the dessert named after the restaurant. It was so incredibly delicious!!! This restaurant heads the list of places to dine when in the Allentown area! I've read a lot of the reviews on here and wanted to share my experience. Yes, it's next to someone's house. You're not dining on their kitchen--it's an established restaurant with a shabby chic/country decor. You could argue it's "expensive" for Schuylkill county. For two people to dine with 3 appetizers, 2 entrees and 3 drinks it's about $55/pp. keep in mind that's SO much food. By the time our entrees came we were so full we could barely touch them. The service can take some time. Everything is made to order and they space the courses out -- you're not rushed out of this restaurant! It took us about an hour and a half to complete our experience. If you're in a rush, I wouldn't recommend it. I am disappointed in the $15/bottle corking fee. If you have a large party, this can get expensive and they won't waive it. I was confused by the BYOB situation, but you can BYO and they do also have a bar with a selection of beer, wine and liquor. Overall, we were very pleased with this quaint restaurant and have already made plans to return! read more

Lovely, charming place to have a delicious, hand-crafted dinner, reasonably priced. We are there several times a year on average, since 1995, and have never been disappointed! Lots of great menu selections, and everything is made to order. The service is fantastic and the whole place has a really great feel to it, it sits in a woodsy area on a quiet country road. This place is crowded quite often, at least every time we've been there, so make reservations. Additionally, there is usually a great jazz ensemble or other talented musician there performing a tasteful arrangement. A cozy log cabin, for sure, definitely NOT someone's house with construction going on. read more

This restaurant's corkage fee is $15 per bottle. When we arrived (9/6/2014) we confirmed with the hostess that this establishment is a BYOB...no mention of the exorbitant corkage fee. Our server who opened two of our bottles failed to inform us of this fee as well. We had not even opened the menus at this point. It was only after perusing the menu that we saw the notice about the fee at the bottom of the page and then expressed our dissatisfaction. The menu has no wine list in it and the tables have no wine lists displayed either, so new patrons like us had no idea this BYO also sells wine by the bottle. We requested to speak with the owner no less than 3 times and were politely told by our flustered server that she was busy and not willing to discuss the issue with us. Bottom line is the owner should ensure staff inform customers who walk in with wine bottles. No customer has the expectation of a corkage fee that expensive...period. Running a restaurant business is all about good customer service, communication and, of course, good food. It is a privilege to have repeat customers. And it is the right of mistreated and misinformed customers to take their business elsewhere which we did when we cancelled our orders and walked out. read more
