Nutmeg is a health food store in the centre of Belfast. I am the type of guy who takes little phases. Lots of little phases. Quite a lot of them do revolve around places like this. I wanna start drinking a certain type of tea or heard that Miso soup is the healthiest thing on Earth (it tastes like unhappiness)and I turn to Nutmeg. It's quite a cramped shop and they have filled it as best they can. On the left hand side is the organic, whole foods that are all sourced from Fair trade marked groups keeping with the shops ethical policy. The right hand side is for the sweet, sweet drugs. They stock all sorts of natural remedies and pick me ups straight from natures pharmacies all over the world. I went into the Nutmeg on a whim, but they did not have any. The shopkeeper explained that this was a health shop and not a suppliment shop so I was unlikely to find anything unnatural in there. That got me interested and I asked did they have any natural suppliments. The lady gave me a really good run down on what items are good for people trying to build a bit of muscle. I am pretty health conscious, I eat well and exercise but I recently called into Nutmeg to see what all the fuss was about. The shop inside is well stocked and inviting. They are not as expensive as some of their counterparts like Holland & Barrett, so that's a plus. The staff are really helpful and seem knowledgeable, but I don't like being preached to. I'd rather make up my own mind. I ended up buying some Miso soup which was really yummy. These are the kinds of musings I have as I enter the portals of the Nutmeg in Lombard Street in Belfast. The answers? Dont' know (but it's a kind of nice smell) and no (they don't even try to convert you). The Nutmeg has been in Belfast forever and sells good quality seeds, nuts, grains, organic and vegetarian products. You DO NOT have to be able to knit your own lentil jumper to shop here: it also sells great gluten and dairy free stuff. What I like most about it is, in no particular order: the friendly staff, the fact they carry a fab range of Solgar vitamins and supplements and they also have a selection of sweet and savoury tarts and cakes to take out - veggie, but so good you won't even notice! read more

This smallish shop is a quirky mix of health foods, vitamins/minerals and all sorts of wonderful looking pills and potions. Everything is organic and free trade so you can shop here with a clear conscience and the staff are always helpful to answer any queries you might have. Obviously your Holland & Barrett's of the world do this kind've thing in a more swanky way but I always enjoy a visit to the Nutmeg if only to try out some new exotic looking whole food bar or just stock up on Vitamin C tablets. There are only a handful of these types of specialist stores in Belfast/Northern Ireland so The Nutmeg is a real gem. The staff aren't just part-time students; they are people who are passionate about natural medications and remedies and if you ask them for advice on any problem, they will be able to advise you no problem. 5 stars for being an independent store (support your local retailer!) and for providing alternatives to traditional medicine. read more

Nutmeg is located just off Cornmarket in the city centre and specialises in a raft of herbal remedies, foods and other items. I was after tahini paste to make some home made houmous (If you've ever tried making it without it's a travesty and just doesn't work. It was well priced too. Hard to complain really. If you're an eco nut who loves Quorn and soya based food supplements, and possibly have a loathing for all things of the iron rich red meat variety you'll enjoy here. read more

It is one of the only health food stores in the centre of the city. I often go here for my vitamins and things like that, as you can get them at very competitive prices. I often find that the chain stores like Holland and Barratt raise their prices a little bit so it is good to have a little shop that can compete with these big stores and give you good value for money. The staff are knowledgeable as well and can help you find whatever you are looking for, even if you go in with an ailment but are unsure of the remedy, they always seem to be able to help. I always go here to get to get some milk thistle as it is a great hangover cure. Whether it is an actual hangover cure or simply gives me a placebo effect I don't really mind, it seems to work for me! read more

My Dad's favourite shop. I never understood what it was he liked about it, until I got a bit older and started having a little more faith in alterative and natural foods and medicines. It's very centrally located, and offers a wide range of health foods and natural medicines. I have a vegan friend (well she was actually a teacher of mine!) but I remember her saying how much she liked this shop because it was one of the few places she could get the supplies she needed for cooking and her daily life. I would say it's good for those who are lactose intolerant too because they stock dairy free products. The prices aren't a rip off either - which is wasn't what I was expecting because I've generally seen products like this being way over priced - but no so in The Nutmeg. My Dad gets all sorts of potions and pills here, but I love their dried fruit - really tasty. I have bought many items from the store and the staff are always very courteous and helpful when you are in doubt concerning an issue or product. The shop is a little compact so if a large number of people frequent it all at once then it can seem a little cramped, but it has an old world charm about it like an old favourite book store atmosphere that just simply beckons you in. You will be able to buy all the range of vitamins, minerals and herbs of choice and much more ie nuts, rice, cinnamon sticks and pure liquorice, not to mention a very wide selection of herbal teas. Anyway enough of my enthusiasm, some of the items can be a bit pricey though but all in all it is a great shop. Since the changeover in ownership I have received for some apparent reason the most subtle abusive attitude from the serving staff for no apparent reason and such a dramatic change from before I have received such an odd / rude service at my last purchase that I have decided never to shop there again read more
