I really wanted to like this theater, and there are definitely some positives, but the experience was mixed overall. The movie itself ended up being the highlight of the visit. The seating is comfortable, with a home-like feel--cozy couches that make it easy to settle in and enjoy the film. That said, there were a few drawbacks. The popcorn wasn't great, which is always a bit disappointing for a movie night. The wait staff also came across as rude, which took away from the overall vibe. Another surprise was that they only accept cash and don't offer tap-to-pay options, which feels outdated, especially for Oakland. It was interesting that the lobby was busy and lively, yet the actual screening only had about four people in it. The space clearly leans into a community-focused, multi-use model, and they host other events that could be fun depending on what you're looking for. This place is a classic! Yes, I could come back and sit in the same couch as I did a few years ago, but this place is a cozy/comfy vibe that I'd choose over AMC seats any day. The food is also good! I haven't ordered something I disliked, and it's good portions. They also deliver your orders directly to your seat so you don't miss a second of your movie. The workers are super cool and very friendly. They have tons of events (I haven't been to one yet) and they play their fair share of independent + mainstream movies. I finally made it to a Karaoke Night! It was so very laid back. We started with indecisively looking over the menu for a good 15 minutes, only to find a single soul singing upstairs. He was so good-hearted and made us feel welcome as first timers. And my Goddaughter, 16 years old---so this is family friendly, really enjoyed herself. I promised not to post her, but I'm sharing the videos I have permission to share. If only I'd caught our self elected hosts' version of Gucci Gucci. This is unlike any theater I've been to before. I love the retro aesthetic, assortment of games and activities, and vegan options. I ordered a vegan Parkway Platter and enjoyed the tater tots, tacos, and fruit. The carrot cake was a little dry and the salad wasn't too flavorful, but it was amazing to get so much on one plate! What a treasure of a place! Has become a staple in my life thanks to it's cozy vibe and the kindness of their staff. Wandered in here last year and found a great karaoke spot upstairs, hosted by a very encouraging and kind staff member named Gwen. She graciously answered my questions about the space and told me about the other events they hosted there throughout the week--and took the time to show me and my nephew all the games and arts and crafts we could use. Made it a point to come back this last Valentine's and it was money well spent! Will continue to come here because great places like this need to exist--not just for comfortable seating at movies, but for great connections with people. If you're looking for a cutie movie date or something very comfy cozy solo, I loved my experience at New Parkway. I went to watch Sinners, amazing. They have such a great variety of snacks, I went with the classic popcorn. Obviously it's maybe more economical to get a large and share, but here, get a portion for yourself because they have a whole spice rack to season to your liking. Garlic powder, nutritional yeast, olive oil, whatever makes your heart sing for a good movie. Walking into the theater, it was made up of many unique couches which made the experience even better. I had such a good time and I was super comfortable/not confined during the movie. If you are particular on your movie seat, come before the movie starts and grab a spot! I visited The New Parkway Theater with a couple of friends to watch Inside Out 2, and I loved the experience--it was my first time at an independent theater. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, with a unique charm that adds to the movie-going experience. There's a good variety of food options, though my ice cream sandwich was clearly past its prime. Still, they had a great selection of popcorn flavors and other food, which made up for it. The movie experience itself was enjoyable, although there was a brief hiccup when the screen froze, but it was quickly resolved. While The New Parkway isn't my favorite place to watch movie since I'm more into the luxe seats that this place doesn't provide, you can't help but appreciate this independent movie house. It's punk rock thru and thru. It hosts drag bingo, trivia, Saturday morning cartoons with a cereal bar for kids.... It's that community type of place. Food, adult beverages, milkshakes are all available, making this a fun spot for a movie and eats/dessert. Overall, a true indie gem. I came here with a group of friends for trivia night that they hold usually on Thursday nights. Upon entering, there isn't really any signage that says where trivia night is, but there are people who will tell you it's upstairs in the "mezzanine". I would say that inside they can fit quite a bit of people here that by the time trivia night started, there were at least 10 groups of us playing. I've never done trivia nights, so I heard that the way this place does it is different from others. When I went, there were 3 rounds and each round you have 8 minutes to confer with your team. Afterwards, they will count up your points in the end and you get a prize if you get top three. Overall, this was a fun place to do trivia. Everyone there was welcoming, the host who did the questions was super helpful and gave tips if we had questions or felt that we were wrong etc. Would definitely come back again! Loved the theatre and loved the people working there. Great staff, great location. Learn from my mistake. Get there early. We arrived around 5-10 minutes from the start of the movie and there were no decent seats at all. We ended up on the very far right in high top plastic chairs. The viewing angle was poor. I get that they are trying to fill more seats but it was disappointing. A couple other people swung by the only two other seats to the right of us and chose to walk out instead of remaining for the film. I was tempted to do the same. Will be back. And will arrive 30 plus minutes before the film so I can get a decent seat. read more

The New Parkway is an institution in the east bay! Whether it's for a movie premiere (seeing Barbie there was a blast!), a regular moviegoing experience, sports viewing (like the Warriors playoffs), or special events (their annual Oscars party or political debates), it's always a good time here. Their service is super friendly as well (shout out to Pratik!). Food has the most room for improvement (I've ordered the tofu bahn mi, which was really salty) but you can't go wrong with a classic bowl of popcorn and a beer/wine or soda. Also- it is a great venue for parties! You can rent out the theater for birthdays or other special events for screenings. I'm officially in love with this place. I loved loved the idea of couches and chairs. It really brings out an intimate sense of movie watching. You can cuddle with your date, rest your head on the couch back, and take off your shoes to relax. The people here are also very laid back. They will bring food to you when you ordered at front. I have enjoyed coming to the New Parkway for years. My most recent visit, however, was quite disappointing. I ordered a 'Parkway Platter", which is $25, described as having a main dish, two sides, a dessert and a drink. Here is what I received: a tiny green side salad, some tater tots (which tasted freezer burned), and a medium sized pile of macaroni. The dessert included was a bag of M&Ms. Aside from being a disappointment in terms of food, the platter also took a really long time to arrive. I came very early (about 40 minutes) before the movie started so that I could eat in the mezzanine prior to the film. Because the food took so long to prepare, that didn't happen. No naked! I love this theater so much and I can't believe I haven't written a review for it. The staff are so inclusive and friendly. They get paid a living wage and there's no tipping so you don't get that fake "I'm doing this so you don't stiff me" smile and banter. My only wish is that the theater really figure out whether they want to do commercial or indie. I'll always remember going to watch the 1995 Ghost In The Shell next to a screening of Barbie. The handful of us watching Ghost In The Shell were in the bigger theater but the round-the-block queue of Barbie watchers were put in the smaller theater, like what?!? read more

Great independent vibe. Popular place for good movies. Staff was very busy on this day but didn't rush one acquainting themselves with the menu. The lobby is interesting but the room is not big enough to accommodate everyone here to see Barbie. Once getting our tickets, we moved onto the concessions stand. Love the reusable popcorn bowl! The popcorn and "butter" itself was not up the standard of bigger theaters at all. Like that they have a kitchen and deliver to you in the beginning of the movie. Had the grill cheese on sourdough bread. One gets to pick through a number of options which is nice. Sadly, the sandwich itself was disappointing. Very dry overall and the mushrooms and cheese were less than half the bread area. Didn't finish it. That aside, it was an enjoyable visit. Theater 1 has two levels and uses chairs and pillows with side tables set around. This is great! There is also an expansive condiments station with every seasoning for popcorn imaginable. There is also water available. They ask that one bus their own items when the film is over. Totally okay with everyone to help support much needed independent places like this. Parking nearby is challenging but there are a few lots within a block or two. Please do check out this theatre. The food is what really brought down my rating. The people, effort, vibe, and being independent with a great heart is why I enjoyed my visit. I will be back again when in the area. read more

If I could describe the vibe I felt there, it would be that of the movie Be Kind Rewind, except the owners and employees in this situation were obviously SO AWESOME! I guess I loved the feeling of community/family that came across to me. The atmosphere here is incredible. Super creative one-of-a-kind community gathering spot for creatives and anyone who like non-corporate vibes. The staff was kind, helpful and accommodating. We actually were fortunate to come on BINGO night!! A total blast!! The theatre itself was so funky and unique with great viewing and couches and chairs and seating everywhere. I've been here several times in the past to watch movies, mainly newer releases (not exactly "new" but not the old classic films they often show here). However, they hold so many different events here, it seems more of an entertainment venue than a movie theater. I fell in love with the place from my very first visit, as the atmosphere is quirky and inviting, and definitely one-of-a-kind. I've watched movies in a couple of their auditoriums, one with 2nd level viewing (ie. balcony), and the theater seating is so eclectic... different sofas, loveseats, office chairs, bean bag seating, classic diner booths and tables, dryer chairs (at least one hair dryer seat can be found in auditorium #2), and more.. all furniture is clean and most in like-new condition. Recently I noticed the cool decor for their tables as well, with quotes, photos, instruments, and other designs displayed. All of the walls surrounding the auditoriums and lobby are covered in beautiful and diverse colorful artwork too. I was excited to find they would be showing Nosferatu silent film (in its 100th anniversary) with live music by Sleepbomb this past Sunday. The entrance line was long when I arrived because of the live music still being setup in that specific auditorium; they opened the doors about 5 minutes before the listed showtime, and started the show about 15-20 minutes later. It was fun, the music was a bit on the loud side (mostly because we were sitting right next to the speaker), but it wasn't overbearing, and it softened as we got further into the movie, either that or my ears just got used to it. Regardless, the movie was entertaining, the musicians were good, and though the show altogether wasn't perfect, I was happy with the performance and experience. New Parkway has plenty of snacks and beverages, though they ran out of pizza slices on this busy Sunday afternoon. We got the sangria and mango orange slushie, and both were delicious and refreshing. The slushie was humongous, seemed like it was 32 oz. They have an everchanging food and drink menu, so I hope you like surprises. Also, they can deliver food to your table during the movie/show, the tables have sensors where you place your tracker. This is such a cool spot, I'd be here all the time if I lived closer. My only gripe is I wish they posted the weekend lineup and showtimes online more than 3 days in advance (it's hard to make weekend plans when you don't know what's showing until the Wed of that same week). read more
