Don't get soggy fries and burnt pizza crust from the nearest freezer-to-oven shack, dear God, please don't. If you're partying in the Gay Village or along Princess Street, take my advice and go to Portland Plaice. Why? Well, what could be better than proper fish and chips after a night out? That's right, proper fish and chips. Real fat chips, mushy peas, gravy, battered fish fingers, all wrapped up neatly and smelling pungently of vinegar. My Baa Bar companion, the blonde, introduced me to this little treasure, and I've never looked back. The downside is that it might be open until ridiculous o' clock at weekends, but not during weekdays. Many a time have we trekked there from afar, finding it shut, realising it's a Tuesday. Maybe not enough people would go, but they forget, chippy food is cheap, and students (and writers) like cheap, and students (and writers) are out during the week... the maths does itself. But never mind, just grab it while you can. Some of my favourite memories include myself and the blonde grabbing us a little midnight snack, smuggling it into the taxi and eating it in the comfort of my own flat in front of the TV. Because you do exactly what you say on the tin. You offer battered cod, with chips and pies and gravy and peas, and you're wholly A-OK. In fact if there were a three and a half stars award, you'd be a proud recipient! I live mere minutes worth of strollage away from this branch of small South Manchester chain Battered Cod. (By the way, whenever I think of Manchester shops with around four or five branches, I think of Dev Alahan from Coronation Street presiding over them. Don't you? Perhaps it's just me then. *Dev and Dierdre sexytime flashback* *Sicks up coffee*) Ahem, anyway, you've probably noticed I've been whinging all week. I've been ill, yelpers. And I NEVER get ill. Getting ill is stupid. I don't do stupid. So feeling even more sorry for myself, I'd taken the three mile walk back from Oxford Road to Withington to blow the cobwebs (aka phlegm) out with some cold air and Curry Mile scents, and I thought I deserved a chippy tea. Ah, chippy tea. I might sound quite posh when I talk (so people tell me), but I'm a Northern lass. Like, ya knooe. It's bred into my very bones that I love a good chippy tea. Fish, mushy peas, separate pot of gravy (take THAT, Southerners), lashings of vinegar, salt and ketchup. When I was a nipper my dad used to take me to the chip shop after swimming practice on a Friday to undo all the good work I'd just done. We'd grab the provisions and drive home to eat our bounty in front of evening TV. Picking up my epic portion from Battered Cod for less than a fiver reminded me of these simple, childhood times. And I did the same as I always did back then. Hot water switched on for a bath, cat fed, feet up, Sky+ goodies. I swear, this was the evening that cured my lurgy. So thanks, Battered Cod! I've only been here a couple of times, but I've never experienced the gooey batter described by Alfie. I've never been to the Battered Cod in Fallowfield, but the one in Northenden is much larger than the Withington branch and they'll bring your food to your table. The fish is good, but the batter doesn't really do it for me. Quite a light batter which works well for avoiding post-chippy regret but doesn't really taste of much. The food is better than merely inoffensive, but not by a mile. One bonus is the mini-meal available around lunchtimes. £2.50 gets you a (very) small piece of fish and some chips. Not bad value at all, but the portion is the modest side of medium so not great value either. I used to live near a chippy in London which did a sizeable and delicious lunch deal for £3.50, the lack of that kind of value in Manchester does bemuse me somewhat. To summarise, Didsbury Fish Bar is worth a visit but it isn't going to be a regular trip for me. Unlike the Battered Cod & some other chippies that I have frequented (& to be fair, enjoyed in the moment) the chips do not leave me feeling uncomfortable afterwards and, more importantly, they taste great. If you eat in the restaurant section, you can have as many as you want too! The fish is also delicious with batter that has a good bite to it but is not at all greasy. Having been at Didsbury Beer Festival all afternoon, an evening of stodge was well required and deciding to go without the formalities of having to dine in, takeaway seemed a smart choice (until I got home and realised that my wifes plan was to watch the X-factor - oh how I wished to have stayed at the beer fest!) For 2 haddock, 2 chips and the peas and curry sauce mentioned above it was £16.50 which was pretty good value. Service was quick and 2 guys on the counter seemed up for a chat, unless that was just me after a good few pints of fine craft beer.... This takeaway occasion was great although we have been in the day before (around 6 months ago) and found the Saturday service to be fairly poor and staff very unfriendly so it's up to you really if you want to chance it by dining in.
