The place: a small store front on the diagonal street in Philly - you know the one - Passyunk Ave. It's a cozy space and if you're there on a busy night, you might get to know your seat neighbors very well as the seating is pretty snug. As always, I highly recommend sitting in the front, or as close to front as possible. The perfomance: this was our first visit to the N Crowd but we are very experienced improv-consumers. The group of 6 performers played in a short-form improv style with small and quick "games" and they were fantastic. If you're familiar with improv, you know not everyone in the scene will be hitting every beat, but when one may have skipped, another cast member stepped in and continued right along. The bottom line: the value for your dollar is AMAZING with the N crowd. I highly recommend a visit for a good time. I really enjoyed this place. I'm used to comedy shows, but I came here understanding that it isn't your ordinary comedy show. It's Improv. I really enjoyed not knowing what was going to happen next. They ask the audience for topics and use those topics to do their acting. Some people were funnier than others, but we still laughed a lot. I can see how reviews will vary. It isn't rehearsed, so some nights might be funnier than others. Overall, the hour was too short. The price was reasonable. This place isn't for kids because they choose some topics that are not appropriate for everyone (which is great). Parking isn't really good in that area, so if you're driving to, give yourself some extra time to find parking. read more

I went with a friend this past Friday. The performance area is pretty small, and even though they had the AC on, it was still pretty hot by the end of the night. The improv comedy show lasted for about an hour and a half. Obviously some of the performers were funnier than others. Overall I have to say that the show was great. I was laughing for most of it. Just so you know, they don't sell any snacks or beverages during the show. But I did see some people bring some beer and drinks, so it could be a BYOB? Either way I wouldn't mind coming back especially since tickets are only $10 buying ahead and $15 at the door. read more

This improv comedy club is a great way to have fun for cheap. I saw my first professional improve comedy show at the N Crowd, and I was not disappointed! The stage is small, and the audience is close up. I sat in the front row, and there were maybe 5 or 6 rows of 8 chairs split by an aisle. I was a little shy about sitting in the front row, but they didn't really try to make anyone uncomfortable about volunteering. (And if you volunteer, you just might get a free ticket to come back!) The N Crowd plays many games and even made one up on the spot, unlike that of Whose Line. The beginning was lackluster, and you could tell they were just getting warmed up. My boyfriend and I were slightly worried the rest of the show would be like that... but no! My cheeks were hurting from laughing and smiling, and there were definitely some great jokes in there--interspersed with humor that was trying too hard. Everyone seems to put in a lot of effort and think on their feet, but some definitely stick out more than others. Shout out to the two Matts, as they were consistently funny--especially together! I would recommend checking out the N Crowd as a date night with the significant other or friends. I laughed so hard that needed to physically rest my face and stomach after my first show. These comedians are so so so talented! I have been to 5 or 6 of their shows and their energy, humor and awkwardness makes a great recipe for the show. Improv can be tough but even if these folks fell flat on a skit, they were able to pop right back up with ease. The experience you get will vary depending on the audience participation. I'm into the N Crowd. I go where the N Crowd goes. When's the last time you laughed so much your cheeks hurt and had to gently massage them at the end of the night? For me, it was Friday from about 8 to 9:30 at the N Crowd show. This is a small theater tucked away on N.3rd just South of Vine. Maybe 40 seats and $12 presale. You can buy at the door for $15 ($10 with a Yelp Checkin deal) but I wouldn't risk it because they've been sold out the last few times I tried to go. The crowd (the audience that is) is generally 20 something girlfriends who dragged their boyfriends out to try something different, so audience suggestions can be hit or miss, but we were really impressed with the show and all the actors were hilarious. They run through a bunch of different improv games, which range from 2-6 actors. An emcee takes suggestions and keeps things moving. Pro tip: if you volunteer and don't get picked you might just get a free ticket to come back! Don't be one of the assholes that yells out stupid suggestions. One of the funniest skits all night was when the location suggestion ended up being Cameroon. Think creatively! Highly recommend for something different to do! read more

I've been to multiple professional improv shows, in Philly, in Phoenix, in Chicago, and many college improv shows as well. With improv, you have a responsibility as an audience member to assist with their comedy. You don't have to be funny, you simply need to provide something for them to work with. The times I've been to bad improv is when the audience is dead and has no suggestions. The N Crowd had me laughing till I cried, my sides hurt, and I might even have peed a little. I couldn't believe the price, you can't even see a movie at a theater for $10! The show lasted almost two hours long and I laughed at least 75% of the time (which is a LOT of laughing). If you need MORE interaction, this group pulls audience members up on stage to help out (with no pressure) quite often. I enjoyed their choice of skits, and they even switched hosts halfway through the show so that we could watch different sets of improvisers work together. They do not have a concession stand, so bring your own snacks and drinks - just clean up after yourself. Bring a friend, a group, or a date and enjoy a very inexpensive night out. :) read more

This was a really great time. EVERY Friday night at 8PM, they do their short-form improv comedy show. I was laughing the whole time. Tickets are only $10 and the show is nearly two hours long! The time flies because you will be having fun. The theater space they currently use is on the second floor of the Actors Studio on Third Street. It is a small space with about 38 chairs. The AC was running constantly so the space was kept nice and chilled while the performance was going on. Jokes and wit come at you at 100 miles per hour. The energy and ingenuity of this group is absolutely outstanding. If you're a newcomer to improv, the short-form style (or improv games) are what make up this performance on Fridays. So, if you've seen "Who's Line is it Anyway" on TV, you'll kind of know what's going on. But that's not really important, because improv is about being spontaneous! They also do long-form, but at different times. Afterwards, you're most likely to find the cast getting drinks and some food at Charlie's Pub just down the street around 10:30 PM. Recently came here on a first date and while the date was overall fantastic, the N Crowd provided a fantastic way to spend some time breaking the ice and laughing together. The venue is small and intimate, which only encourages the required audience participation. The performers themselves were funny, some more than others, but certainly all were more quick witted than I could ever hope to be! When I set out to plan a small birthday event for 3 amazing people in my life all with April birthday's I had no idea what to do. With nothing more than a date in mind, I pulled up phillyfunguide.com and clicked on April 15th. Listed there, I saw The N Crowd. Having lived in Philly for over 4 years, I was interested that I had never heard of this before. They have a great website with links to some videos of their performances. Sure, this could work! The best part was that the tickets were only $10! I could buy all 6 tickets myself and look like a rock star! This killed plan B which involved buying 6 tickets to the Phillies game. Let me tell you, I don't care how big of a Phillies fan you are, if its not the playoffs, you should get your butt out to see The N Crowd! So, The N Crowd is essentially a home town, intimate little theater version of Who's Line Is It Anyway? All the performers were truly outstanding and memorable and the bits of direction they asked the audience for made for a hilarious show. Not five minutes in and my face was sore from laughing so much. About five minutes later and my sides were splitting! I'm trying to convince myself that it would be completely ridiculous to go every week but I may not be able to resist for long. The N Crowd is quick, easy, affordable and uber satisfying. It's like a McRib Sandiwch! Needless to say, everyone in our party had an amazing time and I did in fact come out looking like a rock star. Operating out of a small studio theater in Old City, N Crowd does a great job of keeping the audience engaged, and often as participants. They have a good crew that keep your attention with interesting improv fare, including, but not limited to: "Remove Control" (one cast member controls the scene, i.e. fast-forwards, rewinds, slow-mo, etc), "Scenes from a Book" (typically, an audience member reads lines from a book and a crew member has to respond to the passages/single sentences from the book. If you like to get involved during a show, and they're presenting their "What if they dated?" skit, you may either volunteer or be volunteered to have a role; two audience members are "interviewed" for a few minutes as the N Crowd crew listens, and act out a fictional date based on the self-divulged details of the two audience participants - the results are typically outrageously funny, and dead-on accurate (or you'd imagine it would be.) read more

Have been a few times and always enjoy myself. This is a great place for a an inexpensive night out. It's a fairly intimate comedy show, in that the theater itself only seats about 25 people, and there is enough audience participation to keep you engaged. Tickets are fairly low priced, though shows are only on weekends. The venue does not have any kind of bar/food service, and they are *technically* discouraging of BYO, as the landlord seems to frown upon it. While you may interpret that as you will, this place is only a fair walk from Market st resturaunts/bars, and there is Race St. Cafe right around the corner for pre/post-show drinks. I've been here five times, and it's never been bad! As we were leaving tonight, my boyfriend said, "I always feel so happy and good when I leave the N crowd!" And it's true. We just love our Friday nights when we can come here. Never again will we let a show sell out before we buy tickets. Because that's just foolish. Even when some of the performers have an "off" night, they are still so funny. My favorite favorite one is Beth, and my boyfriend really likes Chris. We have an ideal line-up in mind for what the best show ever would look like. (It includes Beth and Chris!) Each performer brings something different to the show. The set-up is just great. The games are an ideal way to bring out the funniest scenarios. I really like the game where two people are on stage and neither one can talk unless the other one is. Beth and BJ made me cry laughing once doing that one. My boyfriend really likes the sex with the N crowd one and Ding. Really the only bad part of the show is when inevitably someone yells penis or dildo at the end of the show. Like come on, guys. Keep up the awesome job! We love you, N crowd! read more

I've always loved "Whose Line is it Anyway?" and never really knew where to go to see Live Improv. Since beginning my search for a good laugh, I've seen a Second City show in Chicago and ImprovAcadia in Maine. I live in NJ and googled improv near me and The N Crowd came up. I went with a few friends and we absolutely loved it. I've been about 5 times now and have loved it each visit. I keep bringing new people. It's a great night out if you're tired of the same boring stuff. My sense of humor typically LOLs at comedians such as Bo Burnham, Brian Regan, Nick Swardson. I love The Office, Brooklyn Nine Nine, The Colbert Report.... so if you have a similar sense of humor, I think you'd love it. :) read more

I grew up watching 'Whose Line is it Anyway?' But had never seen a live improv show before seeing the N Crowd in action. They were absolutely fantastic! BYOB comedy club. Typical comedy club scene, smells funny, not kept very clean and unpleasant to the eye. I've been to several comedy clubs but this was my first improv experience. It started off very slow and unfunny but it got better and better! The N Crowd highly encourages the crow to participate in their skits and it amazed me how well rounded these comedians were when they came up with them. Any comment or suggestion taken from the audience was made into a scene/skit and that meant these comedians needed to know a little bit about a lot of topics/people/events. I was laughing pretty hysterically from the middle to the end. You can quickly tell there are some more experienced than others but I thought the group had a great dynamic going and it was super enjoyable to watch! I def plan to return with friends! read more

You can't beat improv for 10 bucks a ticket! Unfortunately there were only a few standout performers. You wanted the select few to be onstage more, cause it was definitely hit or miss with the others. The host for the evening was great, funny in his own right, and kept the night flowing with ease! It's not so much that the group on stage weren't trying. It's probably not even that some of them aren't individually funny. But....I think you can probably guess where this review is going. I feel mean giving one star, something that I've never done before, but the evening I attended was painfully unfunny. It was very much "Who's Line Is It Anyway?". Without the comedy. For example, it must be very hard to impersonate Sacha Baron Cohen (in the "party" game) if you have no idea who he is, like one of the performers. Similarly hilarious was "Thinks-Everyhting's-On-Fire Woman" in the superhero game; impersonating a fire-hose for five minutes must have been grating even for her (though this wasn't really her fault as it was assigned to her by another member of the troupe). One of the other games involved dividing the stage up into thirds and assigning an emotion to each third so the improvisers would have to change emotion as they moved around the stage. Of all the suggestions from the audience, the host managed to choose "happy", "sad" and "euphoric". The changeovers (or lack thereof) from happy to euphoric were particularly hard to watch. Apparently they had assigned "suicidal" to the audience without telling us. That's not to say that some people weren't laughing. No, some people were laughing uproariously. Even when nobody on stage was saying anything. You know, maybe it just wasn't my cup of tea. Maybe I'm just a grump. Or maybe I'd forgotten to take my NMDA-enhancing pharmaceuticals before arriving. Which actually brings me to another point: there's no bar. I'm almost certain that this could have been pushed to two stars if they'd let me drink my way through it. Honestly, I'm hoping I saw the N-Crowd on a bad night and that it was an off-performance. Maybe every other night they're captivating and hilarious. If you want to chance it, have $10 you won't miss and are all caught up on house-work, laundry, alphabetizing the contents of your larder and anything else that could fruitfully occupy two hours, go and see the N-crowd! (But don't forget to come back here and leave a nice review if you enjoyed it.) read more

These guys know what they're doing. I used to be in an improv group myself and I gave them an incredibly difficult suggestion. Not only did they handle it well, they weren't phased at all. They rolled with it and made it incredibly funny. I'm not sure who handled the customer service but they were very considerate and helped me out in a bind with tickets. This improv comedy group is hilarious! Many of members of the troop have great comedic skills, and their shows are always entertaining. I have attended about 10 N Crowd shows in the past few years, and I often bring friends who are also impressed with the performances. Their staff is always accommodating with requests (I have requested (Groupon) ticket reservations last minute a few times), and there's always someone friendly greeting you as you enter. One of the groups' best talents is their ability to get the crowd involved. They know how to hype everyone up and keep them engaged. Awesome experience! I love how the audience is an integral part of the performance. These actors are hilarious and are great with handling the oddest of suggestions. I also won a free ticket by volunterring to go on stage and I believe they do this every show so if you want a chance to win- volunteer. If you want to try something different on a Friday night this is a good activity. There is street parking available, public transporation near by, and it's in a good area if you want to get food/drinks before or after the show. 4 stars only because of the small venue and the chairs are kind of uncomfortable. read more

Something new that I never had been to that I thoroughly enjoyed. friend got tickets on the recommendation of another friend, for an 8pm show on friday ( i think this may be their only show. Walked into what looked like a store or perhaps an office up some steps and into a small intimate room with a stage with about 30-40 seats. The performers came out and got everyone excited explained how the show worked, basically a "whose line is it anyways". They had the basic game but your input shaped how it went. Our group was made up of 5 women, they all seemed very unique in every aspect from the way they dressed to their strengths and weaknesses they had on stage. They even explained that it was encouraged to boo something you didn't like. So the show lasts about an hour an a half there are about 20 different games where there are different rules and many had lots of quick switches between mood,voices, actors, etc. What really impressed me was their ability to think on the spot and especially remember what character they were portraying (as many times this would change in the middle of the game and revert back. As far as the humor it was good and there were alot of people that were laughing really hard the entire time, for me i had my laughs but not nearly as much as the others around me. Obviously everyone has a different sense of humor and im sure that it depends on the night, the actors and the crowd input. I guess the only thing I did not like was how "safe" and generic the majority of the crowd suggestions that the MC picked were. suggestions I remember that were incorporated into the games were chicken, easter bunny, nurse doctor, elevator, nursery. etc. To be fair the actors did a great job of elevating the subjects they were handed but there were times when they struggled making something that was not very funny into something that made people laugh. I've been to The N Crowd four times, and never once been disappointed. I'm by no means a comedy critic, but each time I've gone I've wound up laughing my ass off at multiple occasions. It's improv of course, so the mood changes and some of the show is dependent on how creative the audience gets with its suggestions (when asked for a relationship, "husband/wife" will probably get you less entertaining results than "siamese twins" or "dom/sub"). But the comedians are talented, and they'll work with whatever you give them. read more

I went on a first friday for both shows. Both were funny but as expected the 2nd show was better. The show has different games that the actors play throughout so the 1st show was me just getting a taste. The 2nd showing was great. I was familiar with the games and the audience had better suggestions. Would definitely see this again. Cost is low. Love this place! I've been here now 4-5 times and every time has been hilarious. The show is 1.5 hrs and starts at 8pm on Fridays. I believe on 1st Friday there are two shows. The team is very interactive with the crowd and you can tell the entire audience is enjoying their experience. It's a relatively small room with maybe less than. 50 people at a show if I had to guess. We were still able to snag last minute tickets last Fri so worth a shot if you are looking. Feel free to bring your own alcohol and drinks too. Not only recommendation is for cushions on their chairs ! They are wooden creaky chairs and every few minutes I was shifting to get comfortable. Improv comedy is hard. There's no doubt about it. I did it when I was in high school in front of a ton of my peers when "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" was at it's peak of popularity, so I know what it's like. I'd like to be doing it again, to be honest. It's a great and rewarding challenge to create comedy out of thin air, or from being forced to search a mental back-catalog of movie scenes and scripts and try to do an original spin on it immediately. Stand-up comedians have a pre-written set, and film comedians have a script to go off, but improv-ers face a really difficult problem to begin with: their audience can many times determine the quality of the show. Worse yet, the performers feed off their audience. This means that by the end of the show it usually goes one of two ways: they've won the audience over entirely, or everybody wants to pelt them with tomatoes, rotten fruit, or anything else that isn't nailed down. Luckily this show's audience was quite participatory and amicable...but I was disappointed to hear them shout quite a few terrible suggestions that the troupe attempted to roll with, especially when nobody knew what it was that the audience was talking about. Take the show's opener. "166", (or at least that's what I'm going to call it), was a challenge for the selected members to craft a pun/joke out of noun suggestions used from the audience. It goes like this: "166 ______ walk into a bar, and the bartender says _____________," After the audience shouted out nouns, the team did their best to craft some groan-inducing puns, and for what it's worth, they nailed the target more than missed it. It was a great opener, until the show ground to a halt when they asked for a "vehicle" and someone shouted "G6", no doubt in reference to the popular song that I can't wait to NOT be hearing on the radio or commercials anymore because it's utter garbage. The problem was, nobody on stage knew what a G6 was. I think it's an airplane, but what I couldn't help thinking was: 1. Why not just ask for another suggestion? It was immediately established by everyone on stage that nobody knew what a G6 was, yet they tried to make jokes with it anyway. And it didn't work. Perhaps the worst instance was one of the performers making a joke out of how "G6" sounds like "Jesus". With that joke, it seemed as though he was recognizing how obnoxiously unfunny and over-reaching this was, but I didn't think he actually WAS that guy. I thought he was just playing the role for that game. Unfortunately, before the night was over, he had all but built a wall and cemented himself into that role. 2. Why ask for a vehicle? Vehicles cannot walk and they cannot talk, so the concept of them "walking" into a bar and reacting in any way to the bartender's response is a bit too absurd to be funny. This "Why not use a different suggestion" was a bit too much of an on-going trend throughout the 2-hour (1/2 an hour too long, by our analysis) show. My dad purchased our tickets as a birthday present for me, but that said, the price for tickets ($17 each) was really not indicative of the level of quality we got. It tended to fluctuate, throughout the show, though, and some of the performers shone a lot brighter than the others. I will now affectionately give them all nicknames based on their performances, because I'm too lazy to look them up even though I know they're ultimately a google search away, and this totally makes me look unprofessional. Let's see. As I recall, the big stand-outs were: Irish Guy with a Beard and Hat, Black shirt popped collar guy who opened the show (easily the best one at wit and dry humor), The Expressive Midgetess (Clearly the ring leader), Wacky-Ass Lanky Chick (The Clear Audience Favorite), and Redhead Who Acts Circles Around Everyone Else Even If They're Not Bad To Begin With. The other stand-out was Skull Shirt Kid Who Looks And Performs Like He Pays Them To Be There. Yeah, I know that's not the case, but if they all take nothing else away from what I say here it's this: he was awful. I don't know if he thought his tech-referencing humor and beep boop sound effects and visible lack of enthusiasm were supposed to paint him as the "awkward yet endearing young dork who acts like he doesn't want to be here, but blows up and surprises everyone with how good he is" (that was what I attempted in high school) or if he was just having a bad night/week overall. If so, I can cut him some slack. But it does need to be acknowledged that he really stunk the place up tonight. I could seriously write another 3 pages detailing each game, which goes to show how crappy of a writer I am for my inability to express myself clearly and concisely in a way that doesn't take as long to read as War and Peace. Plus nobody'd read it. Bottom line: these guys are worth seeing. But probably not for Seventeen Effing Bucks. read more

Great service, great performance, great time. A friend of mine and I were in town for the night and thought we would check this place out. When we arrived there at about 7:20 (ten minutes before doors official opened), we were warmly greeted at the front desk. The young lady at the counter told us that she show was sold out unfortunately :(. We were in luck however. One of the actors, BJ I believe, said he would see what he could do to try and get us in. After checking the list, he found 5 cancellations and sold us two tickets (Discounted with our Yelp check in!). Although the theatre wasn't open just yet, he told us we could hang out on some couches in the back until the show. As out of towners, we were thankful we didn't have to wander around for 10 minutes outside to try and kill time. The show was hilarious and we had a great time. The service we received combine with the hilarious performance made me sad we weren't going to back in town next Friday. I highly recommend this show to anyone who is looking for a fun,different Friday activity. There was a little swearing and some adult content so please make sure your children are age appropriate. The performance was mostly clean fun, not like many comedy places. Make sure to buy your tickets online. You don't want to have show up and hope BJ is there to work some magic with the cancellation list! read more
