Every time I come to magnolia Park I have to stop by mystic museum. It is a cool place to see oddities. They have really cool merch. You can also purchase crystals, candles, cards, stickers, etc. And the workers there are always very nice.

This is a different spot to cost in Burbank. It is building with 3 separate areas with different things in each one. One has movie items and postings. One has scary doctor and scientist items. And the last is a museum with a tarot card reading spot. Behind these are a museum. We only got a couple of pins and some old spooky records. It is worth a visit if you like Halloween and spooky stuff.

Part of their exhibit when we went for my birthday!!

one of my favorite places to visit or shop for some awesome gifts to give to friends. Definitely recommend to check out especially to see what themes they have for the museum part!!

I saw it was horror themed from outside and immediately walked in to check it out. They have something ticketed related but we were on a time crunch so didn't get to explore more than just the store part. Next time I would like to see what the ticket experience gets you.

I've heard about this place forever and I finally stopped in. There is so much to discover in the shop! This would be a great place to buy a gift for the horror fans in your life. I also got the chance to check out the museum and it was such a unique experience. I loved all of the photo ops and how interactive the displays are. If you pay an additional amount, you can get a key that actually activates some of the displays which is cool! The museum is not super big, so you can really take as long or as little time as you want going through it. The person who was at the shop on the day I went was super friendly and answered all of my questions happily. I would recommend checking out the Mystic Museum if you are in the Magnolia Park area! It would even be a fun place for a date.

I've been coming here for years. The items they have here are fun to look at The staff is soooooo friendly even when u call for questions. The value varies. However I come for the exhibits which are $20 I love the decor inside and outside the store

We checked out the new exhibit Total Grotesque Live (grand opening this past weekend). You enter the museum store, buy tickets at the register, and the exhibit entrance is located at the back of the shop (the worker monitors entry one party at a time). Staff provided great service, swiftly helping us with our transaction, and explaining the rules and how things work. Coming on a Monday, it wasn't crowded or uncomfortable, so we got to fully enjoy our experience here, especially since the sets in the museum were made with quality decor and props. With ten interactive horror scenes, it was worth the extra eight bucks to get the plastic knife that allowed us to stab certain points of the exhibits to activate sound and visual effects, a bit of animatronics too. My fave was the Conjuring set filled with haunted objects and the creepy Nun painting with its evil eyes. This particular display had multiple activations, one which made the Annabelle doll temporarily disappear from the case in the haunted room. Loved the iconic music of classic horror flicks adding to the vibe and excitement, like the Michael Myers Halloween theme song. We ended in the seance parlor filled with ouija boards, fortune teller machines, and more (I believe this is a temporary exhibition as well, but l'm not totally sure). That's what's cool about this place, they change up the immersive exhibits and hold fun little events occasionally, so you can return time and time again to experience something new. Note, no bags/purses are allowed in the museum but they can hold it for you at the store's ticket counter for free. I wouldn't say this place offers the best value for admission since you can get through all of the exhibits fairly quickly and it's not as entertaining if you're not into selfies or IG. We still enjoyed our time here though.

Maybe the advertising hyped it up much more than it really is. We did have a great time and the guys working were terrific. They do need to get a pressed penny machine.

Store front

My friend recommended we stop in here before heading to lunch. The place is very nerdy horror fan paradise. The store front has plenty of cool macabre merchandise, much of it vintage. The staff could not be nicer- great to chat with. Lots of people were visiting when we were. So, it does never busy. We bought tickets to the museum and were VIP escorted to the back and through a secret entrance. Our tour began with spine tingling anticipation. I half expected things to jump out at us, but this was happily a unique experience. To quote: You're traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. Your next stop, the Twilight Zone!" The mazes do indeed present a ton of trivia and activities. We enjoyed not only the experience, but the amount of painstaking work to create a very fun experience for horror movie fans. If you're in Burbank and this is your jam, you need to stop in. I have passed this place so many times and am sorry I didn't have time to drop in before. It's worth the time. I am only posting a few pics, so as not to soil the fun of discovering it yourself. This is the perfect place to get into the Halloween spirit!

Big favorite near Burbank! The interactive Horror Highschool Reunion installment was well done. You got to pick out a custom school ID before walking in and a giant pencil that solves puzzles. I think they do different themes throughout the year. I don't know if this one is still around. It's also a gift shop filled with otherworldly items. Most of which are vintage and hard to come by.

I'll just get straight to the point. For anyone that is reading this review, the "mystic museum" is NOT a museum. It's about 4-5 different rooms of horror props with a promised "interactive experience", except most of the interactive experiences either didn't work or were incredibly lame. So, technically you're really just walking around and taking pictures... for $20. LOL. I mean I paid $15 the day I went which was still overpriced if you ask me. I'm not sure why the owners won't take the "museum" part out of the name because it's pretty misleading. When I heard Los Angeles had a "horror museum" I was pretty thrilled as that would've been amazing to get a chance to learn about the history of some of my favorite horror icons along with their respective movies. Instead, I was met with different rooms that boasted nothing more than cheesy, cheap, outdated props. Btw, the theme was "horror high" but the real horror was how every room just kept falling flat. It was funny because as I was walking through that sad little place, I just kept imagining what I would've done to make it nicer. Maybe y'all should've hired me cause that place is empty for a reason The only people I can see this place appealing to is kids under 14. If this was harsh, good! Get a grip of yourselves and stop overcharging for a medicore experience. Yuck.

I love this place! Shop parts of the store are fun and they have a lot of variety and fun items available for purchase, along with collectibles and photo ops. The museum part is really cool and they do seem to change it out fairly regularly. A must for any horror fan.

'90s Slashers 2022
Magnolia B.

The Mystic Museum store is a great place to shop for an unusual gift - they have creepy relics like animal bones and Victorian death tintypes, as well as brand-new merchandise: horror movie themed wares and generically spooky items like incense, crystals, candles. There are three parts to the shop: Camp Horror, the main vintage showroom, and a little room with mostly paganesque new items. With the addition of the licensed items, I'd say they have a bigger selection than Necromance and certainly Momento Mori, if you patronise L.A.'s other thana shops. The special exhibits are always worth admission price if you're a fan of the theme. I've been to The Shining, Addams Family/Munsters, Camp Horror, Slashback Video, and '90s Slashers - they were all fun. While I don't think I'd pay just for a non-themed museum ticket, you can usually spot some of their permanent fixtures and items mixed in with the feature.

When you go inside, you'll see many ideas built on happiness and some neat-o Disney history, too. A mini train ride around the property is also filled with little surprises to put a smile on your face. THE BACK STORY: Carolwood Barn served as Walt Disney's workshop where he spent many hours building miniatures and 1/8th scale model trains. It's been said that the barn itself is where Walt's original "imagineering" ideation sparked the inspo to create Disneyland Park. Originally, the barn was located in Holmby Hills and named after the street where he lived, which was Carolwood Drive. Later in 1999 after his passing, his daughter bequeathed Walt's hand-laid tracks to the Los Angeles Live Steamers (LALS), who maintained a rail museum in LA's Griffith Park. Fun fact: Walt was one of the founding & charter members of this locomotive enthusiast group (LALS) that formed back in 1956. So I guess the train story comes full circle. Carolwood Barn is open on the third Sunday of each month (11am-3am). Note: subject to change without notice. Admission is FREE, parking is FREE, and LALS members serve as volunteer hosts, and take you on train rides. So be nice to them, they're out there donating their time for free. Membership Perks: Help lay track, maintain signals, transport passengers, and operate live steam, diesel, or electric train engines from 1″ scale (1:32) to 1.5″ scale. It's a $100 annual fee and even kiddos can get a $20 Junior Membership. See, you can easily join the OG Walt Disney Club (Mickey ears are optional).

I thought it was a timed entry but it is not...or it wasn't when we went. I followed the parking sign on the wall which led me to a lot just a little north of the museum. It was $20 to park there. Had I had more time to plan, I may have parked somewhere else as I felt that was a bit steep. I'm assuming metered parking would be hard to find in that location as it is in the heart of Hollywood. I thought it would be similar to the Museum of Illusions in New York, but rather than a museum feel, this was purely just photo ops. You can rent tripods at the front for $10. They also provide free lockers for your bags and stuff- which I would highly recommend. I didn't take up the offer in the beginning but soon realized that was a better option. I would also like to highly recommend and thank Tim! He showed us the ropes of how to take photos and he took some photos for us. He was friendly, professional and patient with my two young kids. He definitely knows his way around an iPhone camera and showed me some tricks I didn't even know. Tim's photos came out a lot better than mine as you need to find the perfect angle for the pictures to have that illusion effect. The tickets I purchased online also allowed us to go to the giant house next door and the upside down house. Tim came to the rescue again and took some amazing photos for us in the upside down house. It was a fun experience for all of us and I would definitely recommend visiting this location. If you see Tim, ask him for some pointers! Thank you, Tim!

There are several photo-friendly illusion setups that make for some cool and creative shots. We bought the bundle deal and also visited the Upside Down House and the Giant House. While those were interesting to see, there still wasn't much to do at either location besides taking pictures. One thing I really appreciated was the front cashier--He was very nice and welcoming, which made the check-in experience pleasant. However, I don't think the visit was quite worth the price. It felt a bit too expensive for what it offers, especially considering the bundle included all three exhibits. The experiences are fun for photos, but they're fairly short and limited in activities. For the amount you pay, it would be nice if there were more interactive things to do or more areas to explore. Overall, it's a good spot if you're really into taking fun illusion photos, but if you're expecting a longer or more activity-filled experience, it may feel a bit overpriced.

A nice revelation to find out such a cool museum complex in the heart of Burbank!…read more I found out about Burbank Historical Society pre-pandemic and never got around to visit it. But I checked their site and noticed that they re-opened, so we went to check it out as a Valentine's Day activity in a Sunday. The museum is oopen only Saturdays and Sundays from 1 pm to 4 pm. I would call to make sure it's open before you go, this was the first weekend the place was opened in 2022! Plenty of parking on the street and private lot. The museum is near George Izay park, so there are many options for that. There are a couple of docents working, they came to you from time to time to give you more information and guide you around since the buidling is bigger than you'd think! Very nice people at the front desk, you can visit the museum for free, can leave a donation if you can. The museum has a bit of everything: history of Burbank and the city developped, with many photos, maps, information. A bit about industries that made Burbank a home, like Lockheed Aviation, Disney Studios and NBC. So you have plane models, stories about Amelia Earhart, lots of memorabilia and fun props from Disney, NBC and Debbie Reynolds who used to be Miss Burbank. Cool trivia! And lots of private collections on display, automobiles (they rent them for movies or parades), pottery, train sets, old wineries and Burbank's agriculture and farming on display, old restaurant signs from the area, a bit of everything. The place is keeps going on, so you need 1-2 hours at least to tour it. It is fun, educational and entertaning! There are many restrooms and you'll barely see any other visitors! Great place for locals to learn more about the area, could be fun to being visitors, as a off the beaten path attraction. Cool for all ages! Wonderful museum complex, check it out, we had a very nice visit and we'll return!

I cannot say enough wonderful things about our experience here at Rubel Castle. Our host, guide,…read moreand local "Rubelligent" volunteer, Ms. Kathleen had all the intel about this historical property. She was so knowledgeable and helped set the stage for us to slip into a forgotten era and get a glimpse of how imagination met inventiveness with a DIY charm. ~ A LITTLE BACKSTORY FOR YOU ~ It's not pronounced Rubel as Barney from Flintstones. Rather, it's like Target is to Targét when we are trying to be fancy. So that's Rubel as in "Roo-bell." Unlike modern-day construction, Rubel Castle wasn't built overnight. It was made of collected recyclables and construction rubble that spanned many decades and took several friends and volunteers to build it. For Michael, however, the lifetime inspiration was first sparked at the age of 9. His love for canons was where it started and the rest is history you can hear about on the tour. But don't just show up like we did randomly one day. To book, visit RubelTours.org and make a reservation. ~ OUR TOUR EXPERIENCE ~ It's as if Michael Rubel, the creator and mastermind of this enchanted dominion had intended it to be--magical. Built in the castle period of wood and tin, every corner captured our interests, from antique cars to the 1890's Seth Thomas Tower Clock with a unique backstory (and only six in existence today). There were old vending machines, tools, trinkets, and machinery that time had long forgotten. Did I mention there was a drawbridge? Yes, and a dungeon too. I was just waiting for a dragon to come swoop down on us next. Walk in the footsteps of famous visitors like Alfred Hitchcock, Dwight Eisenhower, Jack Benny, and Bob Hope. It's a feast for the eyes no matter where you glance. I particularly enjoyed the bottle house that Michael built in 1968 as his "home" as a kid. That independent spirit was quite charming to see. ~ WATERCOLOR NATURESCAPE ~ We were fortunate to have our gracious host lead us on a tour and organize a special art crafting experience outdoors. It was absolutely lovely beneath the trees and between rusted vintage cars from the turn of the century. We each got a small canvas to paint our flowers in watercolor. (This particular experience takes place in the Spring and Fall, weather permitting.) We heard the squirrels rattling in the leaves and birds chirped and sang in the trees above. We discovered that peacocks apparently originated from this property, compliments of Michael Rubel. And did I mention that on the far side of the property, a custom garden was in full bloom? You'll marvel, you'll laugh, you'll squint in confusion--honestly, it's everything you'd want in a castle built with love, imagination, and a dash of madness. And let's talk about the makeshift cemetery. Quirky? YES. Fun? Absolutely. Slightly spooky? Only if your imagination is over-caffeinated. But it fits the vibe perfectly--like the castle whispered, "You know what I'm missing? A tiny cemetery." The tours are fantastic, the guides are passionate, and the whole experience feels like you're stepping into a living scrapbook of California history and charming chaos.
